I knew what it meant but can't remember anyone actually saying it. I was half expecting to see a McManus journal of drunken hijinks here

Google says yes.  I say its a tired cliche if you are writing your memoirs.   ;D

If one were fully in the bag I suspect that he or she would not have the capacity to write their memoir. That may not be the biggest problem since I reckon that that person would not have the capacity to remember anything anyway.  I have always subsrcribed to the maxum that the bag is always half full. That thought gives hope except where a colostomy is involved.
