I just wanted to remind you all that we have Best Shot in Joliet every Wednesday at PM (Unless otherwise noted). This week we will be at West Park and are expecting record numbers. Yesterday in Shorewood we had a new record of 75 players, including 45 in the Amateur divisions. That works out to a foursome on every single hole with a six-some and a five-some mixed in. I saw Frank Grimes at Channahon yesterday & asked him about J-town tournies. He said no World's Biggest (already passed the usual weekend anywho), Lumber Cup would be unsanctioned if it happened, maybe no State due to high Mokena fees, and possibly no Channahon.
Again, this was just a quick 2 minute talk with Frank, so not concrete by any means.
Couldn't IL states be held elsewhere? Seems like an easy answer to me if Mokena keeps raising prices.

Anybody could call their tournament the IL state championships. Its just a name and has no official meaning.
If there was some sort of vote to determine a tournament to be a more official IL State Championships then I think Peoria or something in the central part of the state would be a better location anyways.

I started the drift and the movement continues. This now seems to be its own thread.
Peoria makes sense if the name really matters to anybody. There istill seems to be a void in Joliet area tournaments this year that seems open for an enterprising TD.
To get away from the thread drift here, I would recommend that nobody give away the dates for Joliet Tournaments at this point. I know we are getting close to the date for the West Park Tournament, but there may still be something in the works. Hopefully, there will be more infor in the next couple of weeks. Thanks foryour understanding and concern.

I talked to Gary over the weekend and he is still planning on running Il State.
the reason he has not posted it yet because he is working on having it Highland park in Joliet and the course is still under construction. So if all goes as planned Il State will be at highland park which is located in pilcher park near the course in Lockport. And as far as anybody else running Il state I dont see that hapening Gary Lewis runs the best tourneys in the state.
Didn't mean to start a sh*tstorm with that post, I just know that besides Jason posting there hasn't been a lot of info coming from the J-town area regarding tournaments
Although they seem to be up on what is on this message board, judging by the advent of Ryan posting for the 1st time. No arguing that Gary runs good tournaments, but a lot of people besides guys that go to J-town leagues would like to know what's happening also. This is the 1st time I've heard about IL States being held at Highland Park.
I'm not familiar with the park or layout of the course(Highland), but is it going to be more challenging than Mokena? I've got to agree with Dan, IL States is just a name, could be anywhere. The real IL States should be the most challenging test for an Illinois disc golfer, which right now is going to be the Peoria Open, closely followed by IOS @ Rockford. Knowing how Brett has designed temps in the past, that Temp Course will probably be tough as hell.
highland park is going to be a really good one, alot of work has been put in and continues to do so, the baskets are the last thing going in beacaue the work will never get done if everyone is trying to play instead of work.... when this course is finished it will be the best in the area...
ps the jtown crew has run IL states from the beginning...lets keep it that way

Ryan- Gary does run great events and in no way was I trying to 'take' IL States. It was just a suggestion....It would suck to have no IL States- which is why I half-heartedly suggested what I did!
What i'd like to see in 2009 would be an A-Tier in Joliet, Peoria, & Rockford. That might to get some attention from the disc golf population around the country.
Brett, are you suggesting separate A-tier tournaments at each location? I agree...that would be awesome. For a moment I thought you meant one tournament playing courses in each of those places....I think I'm just really tired :-P.
Skipped Lombard leagues this week in order to play in Joliet for the first time at leagues. Here are my impressions.
Good:
The courses
We played West Park and even though it was wet it is always fun. Forces you to use more shots than just backhand hyzer with overstable driver/midrange/putter.
The players
There are some fantastic players down there and some really cool guys as well.
The payout and turnout
Lots of guys (81) and lots of spots paying out.
Bad:
Organization
We did not start until well after 6 pm. Maybe even 6:15 pm. If you are playing 24 holes and it isn't the middle of June...start earlier. When it got dark our group (and many more) still had 6+ holes to play. There was a lot of waiting on tees which is partly due to the course...but this isn't the first time they've ran leagues. I feel this should be planned for. It was pitch black when we finished and my partner lost a red disc on an approach shot of about 50/60 feet in the woods. Fun times.
Some players
While this may be partly due to the fact that I wasn't playing in the "pro" division and because we started so late...our partners finished out the last hole before my partner and I and just left for the clubhouse. We would have appreciated their help looking for my partner's midrange as well as appreciating some accurate scoring. They had the score card and wrote us down for a 3 when we 4'd the hole. Of course, they would not know this as they had left. In addition they wrote down an incorrect score for themselves. I didn't even care at this point because it was so late and because they had shot a poor round. Maybe I should have said something? *Shrugs*
The Verdict:
Joliet is about an hour drive for me...more in traffic. With only this first experience I don't know if I will ever go back. If I lived in Joliet and there were NO other leagues...yeah...I'd play. As it is...even if I lived halfway between Joliet and Lombard...I would play Lombard even though it is a FAR inferior course to West Park/Channahon/Mokena. I have new respect for the job that Matul does at Madison Meadows. Good job. I would recommend playing the Joliet leagues if you are in the area...otherwise there are much better run leagues in the Chicago area.
Caveats:
This is just one impression. Admittedly, I may not go back. The guys running the leagues do keep the cash on hand. They don't have to "go to the bank" to pay your ace. There are huge turnouts that they have to deal with. No, I don't have the commitment to start my own league...yet :-P. Hope some of these comments are beneficial either to someone who would like to play in the Joliet leagues or to someone looking to run some quality leagues themselves.

I moved to Colorado last year and will say I miss The J-town Dubs. I've played dubs with the J-town crew for only 2 years and I always had so much fun. The end of the year party at channy is a blast.

Sorry you did not have any fun. It sounds like you got hooked up with some first-timers. You should have spoke up to ypur peers and asked them to help look for your lost disc.
Instead of complaining about late starts and what could be better, ask what you can do to help. Maybe you will see how much work goes into a league and decide that starting one of your own is harder than you thought. These guys bust their butt to put on a great league.

I thought he wrote a good critique and also put the disclaimer that he doesn't have the commitment to start his own league. It was his 1st time out there and gave us his thoughts. As someone who used to travel to play those leagues, I know how it can be. I thought his comments were constructive, not complaining. If so, he just woulda said J-town leagues suck or something.

That is exactly what i'm suggesting. 3 separate A-Tiers. Joliet, Peoria, Rockford. It would also be awesome to see the Homie become an A-Tier as well. It's possible. If every PDGA member in Illinois bought a CFR disc for $20 and the local club supported the event it would easily fund 3 A-Tier events.
Another idea i'd like to run by Illinois PDGA members running a league. A $1.00 league tax that would be used to support such events. Chuck Kennedy has said MN does this to support their events. That $ adds up in a hurry.

Jay town just doesnt have enough players that step up and take leadership... when I travel to other states to play tourneys one thing i notice is that the whole area is working together to run events.. In IL there are so many different clubs and not many of them work together... In IL you have Discontinuum, Fox valley, red roc, jay town, etc etc.. In the st. Louis area they have one club with almost 400 members that work together.... If we all worked together, IL could be a hot spot for disc golf... We have the course, we have the players,, we just need the organization....
A couple of changes for the Jtown doubles league:
18 hole courses are going to be capped at 72 players
Long courses (Joliet/Mokena) will have 5:30pm starts.
Last night we played two times around 12 holes at Knoch Knolls in Naperville. Start was prompt at 6:00pm, but with the number of players we didn't finish until 8:45 or so.

First of all, its J-Town, not Jay-Town. We have different clubs because we are in different areas- St. Louis is 1 city which is why they have 1 club.
Not sure if you noticed at Sinnissippi, but there were people from many different clubs helping out. I would say that that qualifies as working together.

Starting May 28, J-Town Doubles League will start at 5:30 pm for the remainder of the year, except September when we have a few 5:15 starts. Please pass this on to anyone you know that plays the league. Sorry for the inconvenience, but our league is getting to big for 6:00 pm starts.
We are also capping the players as follows:
72 - 18 hole course,
96 - 24 hole course
108 - 27 hole course.

Dave Nelson, Josh, & I got a chance to play Joliet League last night. Any league that requires filling out registration cards is pretty big. Very well ran and I like the format with Adv/Pro and Am divisions separated and competing in separate pools.
