Paper or Plastic Sports Presents Nothin' But Chains - C-Tier
August 2nd and 3rd, 2008
NOTE THE DAYS!!
SUNDAY: All Pro, MA1, and MA2 divisions ONLY
SATURDAY: MA3, MA4, Advanced Masters, Advanced Grandmasters, and all other remaining divisions
Where is it at? That will be announced next week. All that I'll say is Joliet area. I have to wait for official approval before posting that information. There are two options that I'm weighing at this time.
Details to come soon...
Anybody know how I can get ahold of Gary Lewis? I tried calling the number that I had (it matched the one on jolietdiscgolf.com), and the answering machine cut me off.
I'm trying to be a Pro-C/Am-B tiered event in Joliet on August 2nd and 3rd. I already have the sanctioning and weekend approval. I want the event to happen in Joliet after the success at Channahon in March and many requests to come back down.
The park district gave me the ok to come out, but they said that for usage of the course itself Gary had to give the thumbs up to it. The park district person said he contacted Gary who said it would take a week to check his schedule to make sure nothing is going on there that weekend.
I received that phone call from the park district 9 days ago. I tried calling the park district person back, left a message. I tried calling Gary, you already know what happened.
Would you like to see a nice split day event run Aug 2nd-3rd? Help me out!
The location? West Park.
Thanks!!!
you should try to contact some of the guys that help run j-town leagues. like daren and jessie they should know how to get a hold of them...
Also some of the holes are not in tourney condition. They are doing road work in the area... 16 doesnt have a basket and 17's bad is in need of work... or needs to be moved for the tourney...
Also if you need any help with the tourney let me know i can get a group of people to get what you need done

He means at West Park. The sidewalk used for the Tee for #17 has crumbled off on the left hand side making it hazardous to ankles to tee off from there
And #5 at Channahon is also out at the moment
just so you know, i think some of the holes have to be moved/pulled because the city wants to widen the street...
effective soon...
I hope that Pros will play Saturday.
Sidenote: I saw Gary creep through the parking lot at West Park on Saturday. I wish I would have known, I would have stopped him and got an ok for ya.
I find it very odd that someone has to ask someone outside the park district for permission to run a tournament on a course.
If the park district purchased the baskets why would you have to ask Gary? If Gary purchased the baskets those are property of the players who have donated money via 50/50, auctions, etc.. over the years. No matter who purchased them they become park property once they are on park ground.
Just another weird example of a jacked up sport at times ???.
It used to be that you could not run a tournament at Hudson Mills without the permission of A3Disc. Same situation as in Joliet, the park lady would tell you that you had to get A3Disc's permission. This is how I would handle Gary ducking me on this: I'd leave him a phone message asking for his permission. I'd give him a reasonable time to respond. Then I'd tell the park district, "Yeah, I asked Gary and he did not have a problem with it." Cuz if he had a problem with it, he would got back to me. >:D
well if the phone machine didn't hang up on me while I was trying to leave a message, I wouldn't have had a problem :)
Wouldn't the guy at the park district (the superintendant of parks or whatever his title is) know about stuff like construction going on that would affect a particular park?
Regardless, it's not like we can't remove a hole or move a tee or something like that. Thanks for the heads up though!
what it is -
people dont realize that this is your/his job/business/ bread and butter / roof over head stuff
i dont care who runs the T as long as there is a one to play and the payouts are legit
have you tried oly fields park district ?
would you have to ask brian c before u did ?
could u use frankfort and the frankfort square park 9 holers ?
would u have to ask gary ?
i think scott should be able to run a T where ever he wants (its his job)
its not like he pulls up next to the guy in his car and starts selling discs right there
i dont think there is price undercutting as an issue
lets play as i eying this as my next available T before rockford

Tax payers pay for the existence of the park so it seems logical that the park is fair game to anyone. Kudos for Scott to bring another tournament to West Park. Steady Ed would want it that way.
I played a few rounds at Aurora today and there was a buzz among the people I talked to about an event at West Park, I think the turnout is gonna be great!
All tournament information that I have presently is now posted on my website for this tournament. I'm not anticipating any problems with resolving the course location, but please pay attention should any details change.
Pre-registration is not open yet, hopefully it will be open soon!
Registration Information (http://www.paperorplasticsports.com/tournaments.html#Nothin)
Scott your division/day information is inconsistent on the link above.
argh, forgot to change the first paragraph when doing the copy paste. The correct division info is listed with the entry fees. I can't access my files while I'm at work (port is blocked), so I can't correct the rest of it until tonight.
Thanks for pointing that out Mike.
open and adv on sunday correct?

open and adv on sunday correct?
All Open divisions, Advanced Men, Intermediate Men are on SUNDAY.
All other divisions (note, this
includes Advanced Master, Advanced Grandmaster) are on SATURDAY.
I did some rough estimates on how that would break the divisions down, and I'm hoping that it leads towards a good split. It helps that there will hopefully be 23 or 24 holes (depending on how that one hole - I think 16? is), and that enables me to have a little leverage as far as field size.
Darn.
hmm... I may have to reverse my days. I was trying to go opposite of the mad city open, and it looks like their pro/adv day is on Sunday as well. I'm trying not to make this too confusing! lol.
<edit>
ok, so the mad city open has a 1 day lower tier AM's, and 2 day pro/adv. So if you're going to the mad city open and playing pro/adv you're not playing my tournament anyway. However, if you're a lower tier AM and would like to play both, then I need to put those divisions on Sunday. I'd still have the conflict with MA2 no matter what I do, but this might be enough to make me at least change up some of it.
Maybe some rec players that would plan on playing both if they could can post here to help me feel better about making yet another change?
I don't think you are going to lose a lot of your lower AMs to Mad City. This is why alternating divisions is nice as players can choose their day w/o playing up multiple divisions. My vote is leave MA3 on Saturday as I don't think I can make it on Sunday. :)
I agree with mike, as I will not be able to make a sunday tournament
I vote to keep it the same. AM3 on Saturday
Sweet, I got Sunday off.
Regardless of my schedule, I say just leave it as is, it will be a nice change for those who can't make the IOS events on Saturdays.
Weren't most Joliet area tourneys ran with Pro/ADV playing Sunday?
Thanks for running tournaments, Scott!
ok, format stays:
SATURDAY
Adv Master
Adv Grandmaster
Recreational
Novice
Juniors
All AM Women's divisions
SUNDAY
Open Men
Masters
Open Women
Advanced Men
Intermediate Men
This is how it originally was and this is how it will stay. Sorry Mad City Open folks, but Joliet is far enough south that there's a whole different group of people.
There will be no custom stamped discs for this tournament, sorry. There's not enough time.

I was out at West Park today to check out the course and see what to do about hole 16/17. I posted a sign on the board there talking about the tournament.
Hopefully everything will be cleared up tomorrow with the PDGA.
if those holes arent in by tourney time we could set up some temps up by the pavillion/ park area between 8 and 9. if i recall my buddy told me there used to be holes over there
I'm moving this conversation over here because it was lending to major thread drift.
Someone at Aurora over the weekend told me about a temp hole that would fit in between holes 8 and 9. I heartily agree. I'm sorry, but I don't know the name of the person that told me about this. However, there's more than likely going to be a temp hole that goes from up close to the tennis courts back down to a small opening area beyond 8's tee and before 9's tee. It fits in perfectly and keeps from having to walk back on 8's fairway to get to 9.
Hole 11's tee will also be moved forward. For hole 16, the shot that went straight from 16's tee to 17's basket is about a 200 footer. It's protected by trees and is a good way for me to use this basket, keep the flow going, and not require a bunch of extra work for myself to ensure that everything will work out ok.
I don't know what is normally done about parking for big tournament days. There is so little parking near hole 1! Because the pavilions will be in use by someone else that weekend, I think I'll probably set up tournament central right by the parking lot between hole 1 and hole 24.

Scott, there are 3 holes that are not in at West Park, rumor has it due to complaining neighborhood dog walkers. The hole you described is one of them. There are Tee markers in the ground for them, not sure if there are sleeves in the ground or not. There is another that plays from by the bathroom to the corner of the park, and another that plays from a spot past 9's basket to a small aclove near the street, then you can take a small trail back to 10's Tee.
I've gotten there really early on tournament days and have always parked at the pavillion. I think everyone just parks on side streets.
It will be tougher too with the construction ripping up that entire street along where 11, 16, and 17 are affected.
I'd much rather NOT add a temp hole, but it really felt silly playing 8, walking back the entire fairway and then moving on to 9. I wish I could set up tournament central at that pavilion so that I could watch the basket, but I'm probably going to be on the other side of the park.
Hopefully it will dry out quite a bit too.. A bunch of tees were either wet or muddy. I may have to go out and flag alternate tees to the side of the markers.
it should be dry by next weekend. west dries pretty fast.
the pdga website displays the correct information now.
I was hoping to have a store set up to do the online registration, but I may have to just do the same thing that I'm doing with pre-reg @ Roselle.
How do we pre reg anyways.
Scott, is it all short tees or will some of the longs be utilized? Thanks

I wrote down the distances for both tees, but I'm really not sure what we'll do. The only tee that I had trouble finding at first was only #23, but I did find them all. There's a good chance we'll use those longs 2nd round. I don't think it would affect the round length a lot.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!!http://www.paperorplasticsports.com/nothinbutchains.html (http://www.paperorplasticsports.com/nothinbutchains.html)
Visit that page - it has all of the details. I'm trying something new - I found a way to create buttons that will process your payment through PayPal, and it all starts on my website. It's pretty cool. You DO NOT need a PayPal account in order to use this method. There are separate sections depending on if you are a current or not-current PDGA member.
Pre-registration closes Thursday, July 31st, at 8 PM central time.
I expect a large turnout for this tournament, so please help the tournament process go smoothly and PRE-REGISTER!!
are you going to cap the number of players
if you add the hole betweeen 8 and 9 ( 8A)
you have to take in acct the pavillion that you said is reserved
reserve pavillion = lombard greek festival in my mind
that 8 a hole is a great hole though
and mukey is right about sticking two others in that area
but you would need someone to watch the baskets
if you didnt want to add the 3 holes
i would eliminate 8 and 10 and shorten up 11
that gives the course flow still
well, you could still play 9 and 10 after 7, just skipping 8 altogether. I don't want to give up 11 - the only long hole on the course (ok, so 22 is semi long as well). I'm also already giving up 16, so I don't want to lose TOO many holes, especially with the anticipated large turnout. I'll have to look at the number of pre-registrations coming in and make a call.
At the minimum we'll have 22 holes - 110 people/day. We're going to pay from 16's tee straight to 17's basket.
Scott,
Another idea to utilize the full 24 holes would be to put a temporary basket down near 17s basket and then use the temp tees across the streeet to shoot at 17. This way you can use the full 24 holes and only change the way the course is now very little. Let me know if you have any questions since I live less than 5 minutes from the course. Thanks!
Jason
the way that the street is all torn up right now I don't think I want to go any closer to the street. Yes, it will be the weekend, and the construction workers will probably not be out there, but when I was out there Monday heavy machinery was lumbering up and down the street. I don't want to risk it, but thanks for the idea.
I also could just leave hole 8 in there and ask that everyone walk wide of the fairway on the way back so that the next group could start, and that builds in a slightly delay in people arriving at 9 - at the same time allowing a little padding time for groups to work on 11 (especially if you go left of the creek on 11 - I'm probably going to make that OB to keep the flow going.)
I'll try to make good records of everything that will be ok - there's some spots that could be really nasty too (like on or over the road on 22, not as much of an affect on 18 - although I realized later I threw towards 14 instead of 18 oops)

So over the creek will be OB, what about over the roads?
Traditionaly, West Park has played over both the creek and the road as in bounds.
Thanks

I've always played that the road is OB. Can come into effect on 4, 6, 10, 19, and 22. I believe Gary always played that OB also during his tournies.
Good call on making over the creek on 11 OB. That's usually the backup hole there and that should help.
You've got my $$, now I just need to make it through the week :-X
hmm, I probably should have left Adv Master and Adv Grandmaster on Sunday. That Rec field is going to be huge... but then again, so is intermediate. So who knows. It's so tough to find a good split!
OB... I'm thinking that water on hole 2 will be casual OB unless any rain this week makes it deeper. I walked across that water when I played last week. Hole 3 would have OB water though since it's deeper there (and over the grass edge), 5 would also have OB water. OB on 4 and 6 I'm not sure yet with the road (it would include the parking lot too, but it's looking pretty overgrown and I could see people debating what's OB out there). 10 Road OB if you really overshoot. I don't know about the service road that would keep the fairway super tight. That's super super tough on lefties with no counter hole on the righties.
I'm going to leave it as OB on the left on 11. There's no easy way to run over there to get your disc without going down near the basket and circling around (although probably following the road there might be a way, I didn't look).
The new 16 to 17's basket would have the road OB, although you'd really have to screw up your throw to go OB. 18 on/over road to left is OB, 19 on/over road to left and beyond is OB. I think on 20 and 21 there's a playground - I don't remember if the edges were easily defined or not? On 21 though I like how the road is right behind it - it definitely makes it a tougher shot if I make the road OB. On 22 I'm probably going to wind up deciding that it is NOT OB mainly because I don't want people throwing more at the outhouse to make sure that it stays far enough to the right and not go OB. We'll see because if I'm going to make that road OB on 18, 19, and 21 why wouldn't it be OB on 22?
So we'll change it up a bit, give a slightly different feel to the course, but still have a great time :)

good point - it would certainly make the hole a little more interesting rather than just a righty typical hyzer ace run followed by an easy putt.

Yeah, On or Over
Pre-registration closes tomorrow night at 8pm. Make sure you get a spot! 16 people on Saturday, 9 on Sunday so far. There's going to be quite a line of people wanting to register the day of the tournament. Save yourself the trouble - pre-register :)
we just got alot of rain today. i havent been to west lately but it should be dry by saturday. saturday is supposed to be hot too.
The creek was high and fast. Crossing over from tee to pin on 5 required walking the long way around to the bridge.
how were the creek levels earlier than that - when you went to cross 2? I'm trying to decide if I want to make that casual OB or not. It would be OB on 3 and 5 since it was deep enough - I figure it will still be deep enough at the event.
Scott, one thing I thought of last night when looking at the pre-reg list is: you might want to have some kind of notice about the new PDGA divisions at the Registration Table to avoid having confusion like some of the people at Roselle; most people still think of Rec as the bottom division
Actually I'd say nothing and keep the baggers thinking they are playing in the bottom division... Oh wait, I'm in Rec now. Send all the baggers to Novice >:D Did the elves send you their list?
Crossing 2 was okay, but you had to be careful. If you dropped a disc in the water, you might not find it. Better to have the stream as OB and avoid the lost disc walk back up the hill penalty.
yes, I'm feeling somewhat elvish... I'll try my best to check everybody and make the fields as competitive as possible. I'm hoping to make full use of my new laptop to quickly look up names and get everyone squared away.
pre-reg is extended to 8AM friday morning. I plan to be out at the course Friday afternoon (after 4pm?) to take more pre-reg. I have about 5 more that I need to add that just came in during the past hour. It's at about 20 players each day right now. Should be a fun weekend!
I played earlier today and the creek on hole 2 was not a problem at all. I was able to cross without getting wet. The creek to the left on that 400+ hole that plays from the costruction zone to the norrowing fairway is not bad either even though i landed on my ass trying to cross it because it was extremely muddy. It should dry out.
sorry if anyone was at the course today (Friday) hoping to pre-reg. I didn't make it out to Joliet until about 10pm, and obviously by then it was way too late to stop by the park. I think there was only one person that I know that was possibly going to meet there, and I know that I told him I wasn't 100% sure what time I would be here.
Looking forward to a fun day!
im excited for tomorrow. how long do you think each round will last.

probably 3 hours per
we finished around 5pm tonight? I think. Only 47 players today. There should be way more than that tomorrow. I already have 40+ players pre-reg'd for tomorrow. I'll update the pre-reg list tonight and get the scores from today posted asap.
Hopefully tomorrow will go as smoothly as today. Many many thanks for all of my help today - you guys made my life SO much easier!

Good times over at West Park, thanks Scott.
