Title: Slump
Post by: JOsh on May 19, 2003, 02:45:45 PM
I've been in a bad slump the past couple of months with the exception of a couple good rounds thrown in here and there.  I've tried everything I could think of to break out of it.  I've tried taking a couple of weeks off, I've tried playing as often as possible, I've tried using all new discs, I've tried using all discs I'm used to, I don't know how to break out of it but it's extremely frustrating.  I was out at UWP on Saturday from the longs and shot something like 16 over!!!  Steve beat me by 10 strokes!  I am open to any and all suggestions!

Just have fun playing.

Play with Shawn.

Make fun of him while you play.

Call him a girlie.

Play with Kyle.

Make fun of him while you play.

Tell him he is stinky.

Repeat this process with all players you know.

When you finally get tired of making fun of other players, you'll find you have improved three-fold.

Get real practice in a open field.  throw every disc that you have...really, and get an idea what you will need for a given course.

Most strokes are from putting or up shots, so practice from 120 and in..get a routine for every shot and keep it the same.

Read, Golf is not a game of perfect...it is about stick golf, but it still applies to disc golf...it is a head game.

there's only one thing that's really going to help your game.  relax.

i was having the same problem not so long ago, and my dad gave me a book on the psychology of ball golf.  in it was a ton of useful information, but the most important thing i learned was just to relax and trust yourself.  you already know how to throw the discs and make the shots, you're just overthinkin' it.

Thanks guys.  I'll try to just relax next time I go out.  I won't even keep score.  Maybe I'll just bring three discs and go have fun.  Who cares if I double bogey a hole.

i'll also try to get out to Nash park during one of my lunch breaks and throw the whole bag for an hour or so.  Hopefully it'll all work itself out after a while.

Ok, #1, you're exaggerating.  I was 5 over from the longs, and if I beat you by 10 strokes, you were only 15 over.  :)

#2, Myk's got the right of it.  You really need to relax...and you just got back from vacation/honeymoon!  You should be so relaxed people wonder if you still have bones!  I used to get tense playing you and Kyle because you guys are better than I am (and still are, whether you realize it or not).  But when I play Matt and Jerremy (other friends, but not in the club...yet), I can relax and just have fun.  Eventually, I got to the same point playing around you guys.  Relax, have fun.  Through a monster drive or a pin-point upshot, celebrate it, and enjoy yourself!

#3, I personally wonder if you are trying too hard?  After watching the way your arm tears across your body, and hearing you grunt when you rip it, you might be throwing too hard.  Your release doesn't seem as smooth as it was 3 months ago (but that might just be me).  Next time you play against Shawn, ask him to watch you throw!  If anyone knows a smooth release, he does.
