Title: Putting Challenge
Post by: Jon Brakel on August 21, 2008, 09:10:43 AM
Here's the deal.
1) Watch the video
2) Do the Putting on a regular basis (one or two 15 minute reps, at least 3 times per week)
3) Every day that you do at least one 15 minute rep of the putting exercise, post on this thread "I did my putting today." and then your name (so I don't have to look up user names)
4) Come to IOS #6 at Fairfield on October 18th and 19th and compete for free in the Putting Challenge Contest. There will be prizes.
5) We'll have one competition each day so you don't have to come both days if you don't want to, but if you want to you are welcome to compete both days. Yes, that does mean you might be competing with a pro, but this is just for fun, so relax!
6) Only those that post regularly are eligible to compete at Fairfield. If you miss a few days here and there for vacation or whatever, no problem, but you need to be posting during these next two months if you want to compete in the putting contest at Fairfield in October.

Here's the link to the video:

I found it curiously interesting that he suggested dumping your current putters before started because they serve as a reminder of putts you have missed.  I think I'll do that because the stupid putter cost me three strokes at the end of Aurora.  I was doing great (for me), and the last 2 holes I two-putted and then three-putted.  Two easy birdies turned into par and bogey.

I'll post later when I get my putt on :)

I'm in, been wanting to push myself into this putting practice cycle but just slacked it off. Group support & a challange at the end should be just enough added incentive to get me at the basket daily.  I know for a fact that I can shave 2-4 throws a round with improved putting.  That will be the difference from cashing & not cashing when I make the jump to advanced in the spring (hopefully that is :) I'll finish out the fall in Int after IOS #5)

If you're following system that Mark Ellis talks about in the video then you can't have a "bad" practice. If you can only make 5 footers consistently, then practice from there. If you can make 10 footers, then practice from there. The point is to practice from where you can make ALL of your putts. This way you are practicing MAKING putts rather than practice missing putts.

Some good stuff on the video; many of the concepts were taken from golf instruction. Confidence and Visualization are key elements.  There are a couple of things I would like to add..  Different instruction works differently for different players;  I come from a competitive golf background, dating back to the mid 1960's as a junior player, and lessons can screw people up as much as help them.  Instruction does not work the same for everyone, so the idea presented that it worked for me so it will sure work for you, is a bit optimistic.
Some of the things I picked up from PGA tour players also applies to disc golf;  Warm up by playing catch or throwing meduium length throws before starting putting practice.   Warm muscles work together better than cold ones, and balance and coordination are key.  Another item of discussion;  Tom Kite once watched me putting with 3 balls and came over and advised me to use only one ball during practice, and to make sure to put it in the hole no matter how far away.   THis method duplicates tournament play condition, so you concentrate on that one putt alone; not just going through motions with different putters.  Using multiple balls or discs, you tend to learn from the first shot, and make correction on the next,  thereby not focusing as much on the first, which is the only one that counts in real play.  Anybody can make a mulligan, since it does not count and there is no pressure.   Also, wIth disc golf, unless you are using brand new identical putters, they will not fly exactly the same, so use one putter, and not a stack of them.   Also, making one putt after another from the same spot may help with some, but maybe not with others.  If you make the putt,  I immediately move to another spot and shoot.  You have already made it from that spot, so why practice it more; you'll tend to focus less on the following ones, and  increase the chance of missing.
Play putting games against others; this makes practice more fun and puts you into more of a pressure situation.  Many don't have the time or patience (too boring) to go out  just to throw putts for 30 minutes several times a week.  One game we play is PFQ; putt for quarters.   Flip to see who goes first, put your quarter in a disc on the ground and throw from that spot.. like H-O-R-S-E.   IF missed, the next player puts his quarter in, and so on, until someone makes the putt and cashes in.   Wniner chooses next spot.  You'll focus more when there's a disc full of change staring at you.
Another game is 21;  3 points for a make, and 1 poinbt for closaest to the hole if niobody makes it.  WInner of point chooses next spot, and this way you putt once from a diferent spot everytime (simulating real play)  First one to 21 wins.

Doug, you make some good points. I think putting games are great but not a replacement for practice. In the exercise that Mark Ellis is talking about it doesn't make too much difference if you use one putter or multiple putters as long as they are all the same. The reason is you are practicing a distance from where you make ALL of your putts so there is no need to make a correction after the first putt. Also he does advocate (and I do also) using EXACTLY the same putters. If you don't have 2 or 3 of exactly the same putters and don't want to buy 2 or 3 of the exact same putter, then by all means feel free to do this exercise with only one disc.

Many people like to do more complicated putting practice from lots of different spots. I posted this mostly for people that don't have a putting practice routine or their putting practice isn't working. I would encourage people that try this to play around with additional practice tools like playing horse or whatever.

I would never suggest that one way to practice is the ONLY way. For the purposes of this challenge, it is just the ONLY way to qualify to compete in the Putting Challenge Contest in October.  ;)

I don't know Jon, Mark considers it good to hit solid chain dead center and get kicked out, but when it happens multiple times it does tend to get fustrating.  Not saying that that is wwhat was happening but I know I have had strings of runs that I nail the chain it hits the pole and gets spit out.

I believe that Jon is talking about the practice aspect only. Spit-outs happen to everyone from time to time. This practice is meant to help with your confidence when you step up to your lie so that you feel that you can hit that putt with no thoughts of anything else every time. This is why you are supposed to practice from a distance that you can make the putt every time.

If you are having that problem of spitting out often, maybe put a little less spin on the disc when you putt or practice on something other than a M-14 basket. My M-14 spits out more discs than a Krispy Kreme does donuts every day. However, I know that most baskets have 2 sets of chains and that 99% of those spit outs will stick in any other type of basket. So I am satisfied that I am hitting my line and continue doing the same thing.

Mark Ellis has blow thru issues with his putting which is why he advocates for trying to hit the center pole. I learned to putt on the first DGA basket that had one set of chains. I learned to putt by aiming at the inner right side of the chains but not the pole. Since basket designs have changed I have modified my putting so that I'm aiming for a spot about 4 inches to the right of the center of the pole.

Putting too hard is the number two reason for hitting the pole and bouncing out. I think the number one reason is because of a faulty basket. Too low of a basket, rusty chains, chains that are missing, etc.

Minor thread drift- the keyring type circles that connect the chains on my Skillshot tend to get bent and need to be replaced pretty often.  I keep a half dozen on hand.  I am thinking of getting a cheaper metal basket one of these days and was wondering what was best.  From some brief research it seems that a Discatcher Sport with a second set of chains works pretty well and also on a bang for the buck basis.

back on topic- I like the Mark Ellis video and have been keeping with his notion of working on confidence and making putts that you know you can make.  However, I can't drink anybody's kool-aid lock stock and barrel. I try to put 4 days +/wk for at least 15 minutes.  I use five discs so I don't have to pick too many up. Of course with the Mark Ellis system I make most of the putts.  I used to  have  more discs in the practice basket but have cut back.  I do reset mentally after each shot so I do not puttt out of a speed routine. I give each putt the same set up. However, I think its important to work on shots that are not so-called money putts.  There is a distance, for me its over 30-35 ft, where the shot has to change in order to generate enough power to make a good shot.  If I don't work on that range, I will be confused on the course.  If I liveed and breathed Mark Ellis I would put from 5-25 feet all day.  I feel that generally keeping his notions has made me a much better putter from that distance.  However, its still important to work on a variety of shots.  I will work four sets of 5 discs in the Ellis range and then do one set from a distance that makes me change my shot.  I will then go back to the "money" distance.

I think that's a valid practice routine and can co-exist with the Mark Ellis putting practice. I think you are advocating practicing a different shot than what Mark is calling putting practice. Mark's system takes your putting game and brings it to the level where you can make all of your putts that you should make. Through more practice that distance should increase. At that 30-35 foot range you are starting to change into more of an upshot with a chance kind of distance--not truly an upshot but not truly a putt anymore. My putting style doesn't change much until I get over 50 feet. I think if you continue to do some of the Mark Ellis practicing, you'll find that your range that you putt naturally will increase.

5-25 feet in disc putting is essential; particularly when the wind comes up, you will need to know it is going in, so I am sure all that practice will help many out there. With the one disc practice and putting games, I am referring more to the advanced / pro players who have some sort of consistent shotmaking ability already and want to take it to the next level.  For better players, a 20- 25 foot disc putt is almost automatic; we play our putt games to around 75 feet ( using a true putting stroke and without any jumping or leaning past the marker after release.).

Aaron I understand what he is saying and the Mark Ellis thing, I have been doing it for awhile now.  I am just saying that some people might consider it to be a bad practice day when there basket is spitting everything out despite hitting solid chains.  Ellis says you have done your job if you hit solid chain.  However it is still fustrating to "due your job" and still get kicked out.  I got a DB-5, much like your M-14 the chains are not very forgiving.  I now take kickouts with a grain of salt, but I am sure others don't always look at it that way.  So depending on your point of view even with doing it marks way you can still have "a bad putting day". I have yet to have a bad putting day since starting the routine.

Dana - I started using 2 new putters (easy for me to say), and I either use those two putters or I use 1 with one that I haven't been using for very long.  I'm completely off using the Warlock now though - moved to the Magic.  So from that perspective I'm trying to be in a completely different mindset.

I putted just fine but then playing a round of 9 after that I kept hitting the right side of the chains and spitting out (putting leftie).  oopsie.

Did more than my fair share of putting this weekend (in between, before, & after the MI State Finals), even charged up my glow magics & did some extra putting at night, skipped Monday due to travel, banged out 2 15 minute sessions last night.  I do have to step back a bit occasionally & toss some 40-50 footers near the end of each session just for kicks tho & maybe a toss in a turbo here & there to keep the ADD at bay lol.

i have 3 aviars that are old and concrete tested

i have 3 aviars that are a harder mold

i have  3  aviars  with Homie on them  (  softer mode)

i have a backup putter and the starter putter

when im at the park i  typically i use   a total of   7 discs from various distances

throw in some tommy hawks and flips also

must practice

i do have to admit that practicing every day builds confidence

i didnt get two new putters cause i just started putting with  2 - 175 super soft omegas a couple weeks before the putting challenge started.
i was putting with champ aviars before, but the omegas have less bounce back when it crashes chains they stay in better. B)

I'm pretty sure all of us at Rockford got more than our fair share of putting practice in this weekend.  I know I did, I think the practice is already starting to pay off. After this month of confidence building I think I'm moving to 40-50ft jumpres for a half hour a day.  I nailed a sick 50-60ft'r while warming up for the final round on East #1 with the channel 17 guy rolling tape.

I have a couple of cool discs in the Jon Brakel disc golf vault that I could use as prizes for the putting contest but I might just give the winners two putters of their choice from Bruce's inventory. Plus a nice trophy. I just checked and there are no cool putters in the vault right now except for a swirly APX and that is already spoken for.

Tom- Jon is referring to the putting contest he is doing at IOS#6 for those of us trying the Mark Ellis plan.
I did my putting one of the days at Rockford. I'm a wimp today and didn't go out an putt in the rain.

Now Jon, if you had some old UV challengers from 2004 Fairfield farewell, I'd be really motivated.

Read the first post of this thread. Those that do their putting are eligible to compete in a putting contest at Fairfield. It's not too late to start if you want in. I hear there's a local player that wears a pink thong at tournaments for good luck...maybe he could sign a pair and we could use THAT for a prize!!!  >:D

So I added an element to my 30 minutes of puttign practice last night. After the 30 minutes of two discing I take ten putters and toss them 20-30ft from the basket "around the world" and make myself nail all 10 in a row before quitting.  This gave me an extra 30-45 minutes at least last night.  The ATW circle started at all about 30ft then I changed it up a bit everytime I had to go back to the basket & toss out the made shots.  A spiral type going from about 20ft - 30ft in 1ftish increments was a fun way to finish the night off.

So far this putting has helped me do 2 things:

1) Before every putt I walk up to my lie and tell myself, "oh yeah, I can make this one."  That really has helped calm my nerves.
2) I realized that when I wasn't putting with confidence, I would short arm my putt because I was afraid of screwing up.  While it did keep my putt from going way past the basket, I was always missing.  I now have a better follow through after the putt, and I'm nailing stuff (as long as I'm not getting tired!)

A good example was at the Invitational - 1st round I was nailing everything, and I don't remember many putts that I missed within the circle during that round.  I would have had a nice even par if I didn't screw up on the soccer field hole and go OB twice!  A 62 would have been around an 880 round or something - much greater than my 826!

We're about a month out from IOS 6, so if you want to get into the putting contest at IOS 6 you need to start your putting and posting here by Wednesday. We have quite a few participants, but the more, the merrier. Each day's winner will receive enough brass to buy two brand new putters. However, you don't have to spend the brass on putters if you don't need or want them.

I've had a non-specific offer for other prizes. Please let me know if anyone wants to sponsor the contest or provide prizes. It wouldn't cost very much to make this the "Paper or Plastic Sports Putting Challenge" or the "Life Time Disc Sports Putting Challenge" or whatever!

I completed my putting yesterday.

Cool thing that I was happy about - I did the around the world putting at the Oswego practice basket as well.  Two putts from spots #1 through #9.  I only missed 1 @ #3, 2 @ #7, 1 @ #8, and 1 @ #9.  That translates into 13 out of 18 putts made.  That's definitely better than what I would get previously!

Did alot of putting this weekend & played a round also... first casual one in a long time actually.  I found that the 20-25ft putts are falling much more often. However, now I need to do one of two things; 1. improve my 25-40ft putting, or 2. work on getting those up shots or drives into that 25ft circle.  I'm thinking the best plan of action here is to work on the 40ft & in game.   That said, I'm backing up the putts tonight & maybe chalking a jump line in the backyard.

all my troubles seemed so far awaaaay....

Yesterday Putting as inspired by Damon Short. My apologies to the Beatles.

Yesterday,
All the baskets seemed so far away,
Now I putt and they hit and stay
Oh, I believe in putting everyday.

Suddenly,
I am twice the putter I used to be
There is confidence building inside of me,
Oh, putting well came suddenly.

Why I
Putted so bad I don't know, I couldn't say
I trained
Everyday, now my putts are in to stay.

Yesterday,
Disc golf was such a hard game to play,
Now my putting doesn't make me want to hide away,
Oh, I believe in putting everyday.

Why I
Putted so bad I don't know, I couldn't say

Yes, I think I'll be taking the "Sponsor's Exemption" since my back was acting up too long to qualify like the rest of you. But since I haven't been able to do all the practicing I don't think I'll win!

Did my putting last night in the dark after our final handicap league night.  Had a very good night & aside from probably the only time i've gone OB twice on one hoel (my second hole) I had a pretty good round, recovered to shoot -5 and if not for those OB's I would have really put it on the pro on my card for a tie with him (not his best performance)  I still managed to snag the CTP on the hole that mattered (club has a ctp each week and winner gets a new disc, i took a back up champ firebird)  I also held the pad for most of the second half of the round & had ctp in my group on about half of the hole sas well. the putting preactice deffinetaly helped bring me back & keep me calm after the double circle 6 on my second hole.   If not for skipping our Handicap tournament to play one of the IOS events I would have tied for perfect attendance with my buddy. I was also third in the "most improved" category.  Awesome run this summer!!!  Hopefully I can keep it up through the fall, travel will be reduced though as I start to feel this recession.

With a wee bit of thread drift, inspired by Jon Brakel and with apologies to Chicago...

...Hitting chains in the park
I'm on a course that's mostly duece or  die.
When the throw is not parked
I simply want  to break down and cry
People throwing, sometimes rolling
A kid selling used discs
That he fished from the pond
Can you duece it (yes I can)
And I've been waiting such a long time
To get an Ace

Hyzer shot in the park
I think it went too far to the side
Broken chains in the park
Won't explain why my putt just went wide
Now I'm hunting, in the bushes
I can't find my tee shot
Or I must re-tee
Will you help me find my Orc
Can you find it (yes I can)
And I've been searching such a long time
For the disc

Now that I've got it I contort under a branch
A clear shot, I've got, basket has a path
Listen chains ring, I made the shot
All is not lost

Tourney days in the park
Lookin' at the frisbees fly
Disci'in days, glo when dark
When you have some tape and a light
Players driving, players putting
A real celebration
DiSContinum
Are you playing? (yes, I am)
We're always having such a great time
When we play.

to all do respect to The Presidents of the United States of America and their song Peaches

Movin' to the country gonna throw a lot of discs
I'm movin' to the country I'm gonna throw me a lot of discs
I'm movin' to the country I'm gonna throw a lot of discs
Movin' to the country I'm gonna throw a lot of discs

Discs are thrown backhand they were thrown there by a man
from a teepad down hill
If I had my little way I'd be throwin discs everyday
Sun soakin bushes in the shade

Movin' to the country I'm gonna throw a lot of discs
Movin' to the country I'm gonna throw me a lot of discs
I'm movin to the country gonna throw a lot of discs
Movin' to the country gonna throw a lot of discs

I took a little nap where the baskets all twist
Gripped a roc like disc in my fist
And dreamed about you woman
I threw my disc down inside makin' a little room for a man to hide
Nature's candy plastic in my hand or can or the sky

Millions of discs discs for me
Millions of discs discs for free
Millions of discs discs for me
Millions of discs discs for free

Look out

Millions of discs discs for me
Millions of discs discs for free
Millions of discs discs for me
Millions of discs discs for free

Look out

I think if you're going to do a parody of a song that no one has heard of, then you gotta give us a link to the song so that we can sing it in our head. And when I say "no one", I mean me.  ;D

I did my puttng today...

Find chains, sweet challenger
Going in to carry me through
Find chains, sweet challenger
Going in to carry me through

I looked over the fairway and what did I see
Going in to carry me through
A band of yellow calling out to me
Going in to carry me through

(chorus)

Sometimes I'm out and days I lay up
Going in to carry me through
Need to play safe so I don't tin cup
Going in to carry me through

(chorus)

The brightest day that I can say
Going in to carry me through
When practice washed my doubts away,
Going in to carry me through

(chorus)

If I get there before you do
Going in to carry me through
I'll step aside and let you play through
Going in to carry me through

(chorus)

If you get there before I do
Going in to carry me through
Tell all my friends I'm putting too
Going in to carry me through

If you can have it setup by 8am on Sunday we can use it. I won't have time to setup a real basket by 8am either day. I'll setup my Skill Shot if we don't have anything else. Once someone putts a round on it, we all putt on the same basket (per day).

If anyone winds up coming out on a day that I don't have your score card setup, I'll have extra. No biggie. I'm just going to put your name and score on the back of the score card so that your score card can double as a leader board card. I have a third score port that will be dedicated to the putting challenge. I only have a trophy and prizes for first for each day but I figure you'll want to know how you did against the handful of other guys that participate.

did my putting today although I was soooo out of rhythm.  Then during the rounds I was clanking everything 1st round.  2nd round I started out great and then fell off again as the round went on.  Oh well!

did you post anywhere what the contest putting format will be?  Is it an around the world, two putts to make one to stay in, or something else?

Is there still a need for a Basket? Let me know if you still need it. I can bring it on Sunday for sure. Possibly on Saturday if someone can house it and bring it in on Sunday. Please let me know.

Can someone bring a decent basket for the putting contest at Fairfield? I'll bring my skill shot for an emergency back up but I'd rather use a real basket. We'll need one for both days. The basket will need to be there by 8am.

  • I'll have score cards for the putting contest on one of the other score ports with your name on it.

    • The basket will be setup near TC and there will be 18 flags around it.

      • Take one putt from each flag.

        • Flags will be numbered 1 thru 18.

          • In the spot where distance or par would be on a normal score card, there will be a point value of 1 to 3 points.

            • If you make the putt, write the point value on the score card. If you miss, write a slash.

              • Add your points at the end. Person with the highest points each day wins.

                • Complete your putting competition round any time before the start of the second round of the disc golf tournament.

                  • Ties for first will have sudden death playoff before awards.

                    • All decisions by the putting marshal (that's me) will be final.
                l
              .

Bumpity...perfect score will be 35.
