But if you're talking about mosquitoes, here's something that works when I remember to do it:
Fabric softener / dryer sheets.
Rub one on arms and legs and neck.
Put one in each pocket (or in your socks to repel ticks).
You will smell lovely and have no mosquito issues.
Are you serious? It repels them? Wow
Sho 'nuff.
I didn't believe it at first, but it works - and is cheaper - and is better for the environment than aerosol sprays.
I'll vouch for the dryer sheet method too.

Every time I turn around someone says I'm doing something bad for the environment. I'll bite, so to say, what do the mosquito sprays do to the environment?
I'm going to try to buy some poison ivy guard to share but that would be a good thing to pack for Anna Page.
I found A game on sale at Walgreens
Ultra Foods has 32oz Gatorades on sale for $0.79.
After camping a couple weeks ago I prefer time release deet lotion (3M Ultrathon or Sawyer-brand products) to sprays now. Often I found with aerosol Off I had to sometimes reapply several times during a round if the mosquitos were bad because the deet starts to evaporate as soon as its applied.
The time release stuff has deet encapsulated in enzymes (scary nano-tech stuff) that break down over the span of several hours and provide a continual barrier. I spread it on in smaller quantities than sunscreen - typically a nickel sized amount per arm, for face/head/neck, etc. - shortly before the mosquitos appeared and was good until bedtime. I could hear them buzzing around but they never got me.

Before my trip I found 2oz bottles of the Sawyer 8 hour lotion at Sports Authority in Gurnee on clearance for about 2 bucks a pop!
i found deet braclets at walmart earlier this summer that work for 100 hours. they work great for camping and playing disc, especialy in aurora, i put one on my wrist and one on my ankle. they were 50 cents each. i bought a few for my boys and i, we weren't bothered the whole time we had them on. well worth checking out.
kev c is not sure there will be room in car for him let alone his stuff

Any particular brand of dryer sheets? Or will any do? I prefer unscented due to allergies......
