Title: Club website
Post by: mirth on October 14, 2008, 03:16:09 PM
Will be switching over to a new server this evening, some time after midnight.

I really wanted to avoid doing this until after IOS6, but I discovered today that the system has been compromised. While I believe the hack has been contained I no longer trust anything on this system.

This will affect both the club store and main club site, and both sites should be back up & running by tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the update and thank you for doing a great job with the website.

Also thanks for taking the extra precaution regarding the site.

It's so nice to have excellent Webmasters. Thanks for your time and energy. It's priceless! :)

The site will go down at 11PM. Depending on your provider's DNS caching, it could be up for you as early as midnight-ish.

The club store didn't make the move over very well. It will remain on the old server until prereg closes for IOS6, at which point the store will go offline until a newer (and hopefully much more user and admin friendly) solution is implemented.

Please LMK if you run into problems with the site going forward.

Looks pretty seamless, Mirth.  Well done and thanks!  Maybe you should consult for the PDGA.  ;)

Mirth,

When I attempt to go to unread messages, I am getting the spring league schedule. I don't know if it is happening with anyone else.  But it has been happening for me the last two days.

Thanks,

not broken any more. sorry for the outage... apparently my server was directly or indirectly targeted in a denial of service attack.

if the site goes down again your best bet may be to send me a text 224.735 0 3 0    8

Mirth-  Thanks for getting it going again so quickly.  All the hard work is very much appreciated.

Tom - Thanks! =)

Jon - IDK. The offending host is located on the East coast. Probably a zombie machine.

Probably not the North Koreans then. I heard a report that the North Koreans were committing denial of service attacks on strategic U.S. websites...I just had to assume that included discontinuum.org!  ;D

=) Analysts in Vietnam are saying that initial reports of the DOS attacks being orchestrated by the NKs were taken on face value w/o any proof. I forget where I heard the attacks were actually being controlled from... Not that it really matters anyhoo.

The latest story is that the attacks were traced to England, I think.

Not to be a bother or anything but why doesn't the Chicagoland Courses Tab on the left side of the homepage work anymore?

The question above regarding the "Chicagoland Courses" tab is appropriate, and this is the appropriate place to post such a question.  I just want to make clear, however, that the tab is just a link to off-site content on another server.  The content itself is not under the control of Mirth and he is in no way responsible for its failings.  If you have any specific comments that you don't want to display publically, just send me a p.m.  Thanks.

No, no, no, no, no.  There was nothing wrong in what you said or how you said it.  I took no offense to anything.  I was merely taking the opportunity to let everyone know that if the Chicagoland Courses feature is messed up that it's my problem and not Mirth's.

Some people may have been banned from the site accidentally.  We are trying to remove spammers from the site, and one of the bans may have included pepole that should not have been banned. Hopefully the problem has been corrected.

I am having problems logging into the forum with Google Chrome and the ScriptSafe extension. The only place I can navigate to is the home page but the forum is not accessible. I get an Error 400 "invalid reqeust was received from your brower". Any suggestions? Disabling ScriptSafe allows me to access the forum but nothing short of that seems to work.

We will have to contact Al and see if he thinks he can do anything. The forum software is a little out of date but the upgrade path is a pain without much payoff in features.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the ScriptSafe extension in Chrome and this seems to have fixed the issue with accessing the forums. This is fixed for now.

I love problems that fix themselves. FWIW I use Chrome w/o any problems, but I also don't have many extensions loaded.

Like what Jon said, the upgrade path for SMF is painful with few features to be gained. Originally I liked having the integration between Joomla and SMF but it seems nobody really got on the bandwagon for submitting their own content to the site. The forum has always been the bread & butter of Discontinuum's web presence.
