Title: Thumber disc advice?
Post by: fourstringninja on October 15, 2008, 04:13:14 PM
I've been throwing a star firebird as my primary thumber disc, with mixed results. Some days it behaves, some days it des not.

Does anyone have any suggestions and advice?

I go with the monster or the firebird as well.
The monster will roll a bit more than the firebird

A Z flick is longer and more consistent than a firebird for me. Jason

I throw a Surge.  (I don't know my plastics in Discraft, but it is like the translucent champion plastic innova has)

I don't have a big arm, but mine dipsy dives to the left, then finishes right, and sometimes I get a nice roll at the end, sometimes I don't.  I don't throw it a lot, because I don't have great form (or abs), and it hurts my rotator cuff.

I'll second that, & I throw alot of thumbers, typically followed by a WOW from at least one person in the group after I park the shot.  Alot of my ctp's at IOS events this summer have come from thumbers.

Gateway - Spirit (I have a Gateway only bag to taunt a buddy) dont know the plastic.. it's green & pretty stiff
Discraft - used to throw an ESP Surge (similat to Star palstic), but found I get more D out of a Z-Wildcat (similar to Champ plastic)

I still use the Z-Wildcat for tommy's, just feels better out of the hand than the Champ Firebird I use for thumbers.

"Champion Eagle"  says The Master but throw different discs to say how they fly.   In this forum, everybody has a favorite disc ,which they use to throw a thumber.    " ESP Avenger"   is good for a distance thumber but remember everyone throws differently.

I can't speak for myself, since I can't throw a thumber more than 200', but a friend of mine (Diah Fajman) was DEAD accurate inside of 400' with a Champion Monster.  I also believe he used to throw a pretty beat Gazelle for the same purpose though, so he may just be really damn awesome at thumbers.

For big thumber D, Schwebby uses a Star Whippet X.  I've seen him crush some thumbers with the Star Whippet X.  I think he also uses Eagles and Firebirds.  That man is filthy with the thumber.

I've seen Mike Robinson use CE Leopards for the overhand shot.

Myself, I just use a champ Firebird.  My shoulder is kinda bum, so I dont really try to crush thumbers.

I would never have thought to abuse my whippet-X

Here's the best advice you will ignore today:

Learn to throw a right turning shot that does not put your rotator cuff at risk.

I will 2nd that.

A few years ago I was throwing decent thumbers up to 300ft. with an eagle. I had a solid arm as a catcher in college and loved this shot. One winter I hurt my shoulder. The trainer I saw said I had a severe strain to the rotator cuff. It took a long to get better with no pain. To this day I cannot throw a baseball, football, or disc like I could before that.

I keep the thumber as a short range get out of trouble shot. I would generally not tee off with it.

I'd also say to be careful at the elbow too - I can't play baseball for any extended period of time anymore because I hurt my elbow pitching - probably needed Tommy John surgery but I just stopped playing instead.  I can't really throw thumbers because of this - and I too only use it for a get out of trouble shot (which unfortunately is way too stinking frequently).  However when I do throw it, I can typically feel my elbow bark at me from it - and excessive thumber throwing (especially without warming up) could have a similar effect.

I've heard a lot of people highly recommend the Aerobie Epic for distance thumbers, although buy multiples as they get banged up pretty quick.

for me the arm pain only comes if i dont stretch before i throw them... also at the end of the year after playing alot it starts to bother me..  The last year i have been working on alternate shots instead of over hand shots.. but man its hard to stop using it 100% when it is that accurate.

I think this is something that many disc golfers don't do.  It is especially important when you use the overhand shot.

During the round, if I know I have a thumber shot coming up I try and do some quick (re)stretching and then mimick the overhand throw with a towel.

The trick to not hurting your arm is following through on the shot.  (you may have an extenuating circumstance)  but most people that hurt their elbow throwing a thumber is because they short arm it and don't follow through.

yeah...what he said.

I've changed up the way I throw thumbers...and now I can throw them pretty much all day with no pain.

For a thummer it all depends on the person and that persons release angle and mechanics,  for me i use a z flick, its by far the farthest fling thummer out there from what i hear too.  I believe it all depends on how far u want ur thummer to go, for max D i use the flick and for med range its a 11x champ firebird and for  250 and under its a whippet x.  The more overstable a disc is the longer it will take for it to do its turn in the air  so for shorter range use something less stable so it flips faster and drops. Longer distance use the opposite so it turns slower and flys farther.

I live and die with the Champion firebird with my thumber. I have also used a KC Banshee and a KC whippet though.
