Title: What is best long range driver?
Post by: danknugs on May 25, 2009, 12:19:49 PM
I have a Innova Champion Eagle 175... I can drive pretty decent with it but I am looking for something that goes farther. Should I go with a lighter disc? Is 175 a little to heavy? I am getting a lot better and would like to try out some other discs that might help out my game even more. Also I am looking for a better mid range disc. Is there a heavier mid range disc that is good? I like my mid range a little heavier bc I feel like I have more control of the disc

It really depends on your power, control, and release angle.  Try something a little less stable and a little lighter.  maybe a 165-170 valk for your driver.

For a midrange I would suggest trying a comet, buzzz, wasp, CRO, or ROC

Well since you currently throw an Eagle I would not go to much higher in speed ratings as your arm might not be ready for it. However, I think a Valkyrie would be an excellent choice it will be harder to throw, but you will get the hang of it. I personally recommend that you through no heavier than a 171 for your long range driver. As far as the mid-range goes I personally really enjoy the Roc it is a great disc that flys pretty straight. I know a lot of people also like the Buzzz (made by Discraft). The Eagle is a good disc but I would understand why you  want something  that gives you more distance. I personally through a 171g SL for my long range driver, but I wold not recommend that to you rite now as you might not have enough power to make that disc effective. Hope this helps and keep throwin'.

Are you throwing the eagle backhand or sidearm? If you are able to throw an eagle flat backhand you have some decent power. The eagle is a pretty stable driver but doesn't have the speed of the new long distance drivers. It is a very predictable driver. I'd suggest a wraith, destroyer, or boss. You will find immediate added distance.

A pro wraith may be a good stepping stone into the world of high speed drivers.

Depends on how far he's throwing that Eagle. It could be power, it could be form. I'm still un-learning my mistakes.

I think Roman reads DGR. Everybody should read disc golf review. http://www.discgolfreview.com/forums . It is the mad science of disc golf.

Grab a Discraft X-Clone and get your bomb on!  At one time Scott Stokely set the world distance record with an X-Clone.  If that doesn't work, try a Sidewinder and a Groove, one of those will go super far for you.  And I know this despite knowing nothing about you or how you throw the disc.  And if that doesn't work, just pull your Eagle back out and quit throwing it like such a wuss!  And if that doesn't work, maybe you are actually left-handed but never realized it.

What Dan is saying is that we don't have enough information about how you are throwing your Eagle to recommend a disc to move up to. If you are throwing your Eagle straight but only going 250 feet then you probably need to work on distance before a faster disc is going to help. If you are throwing the Eagle over 300 feet then you might want to look at throwing something faster.

The driver that is longest for Brett is probably different than Dan's long driver.

What Jon is saying is you should try every freaking disc ever made in search of the magic disc.  It's out there man.  And when you find it, it will be something Innova made six years ago but has never since got the plastic quite right and they go for $80 each on e-bay because some dude in Oregon is buying all of them.   ;D

Bruce has the fastest disc ever made and you can throw it a mile. It has a PT Cruiser on it and he will give you a deal.  It really doesn't matter what the disc is. If it has that stamp it will FLY!  ;D  Hey, so what if its an Aviar, just give it a try.

Pro Destroyer is the best driver on the market. Everyone should have one in there bags at all times. One of the furthest and most predictable drivers out there.

It's the Indian (Native American), not the arrow (or the bow). So if you're throwing that Eagle far and straight then you're going to want to step up to a faster overstable disc. If you are throwing it far but everything is heisering out then you probably want to step up to a stabel to understable faster disc. Come out to IOS number 2 whether you are playing or not and Bruce or Brett or someone else that has thrown a disc in the last 3 years can show you the newer drivers and talk about what you are throwing. Ask Brett about a lesson also. Best disc golf instruction that $20 can buy...if they are still $20.

I've tried Destroyer's, Boss's all that new speed 12 +13 stuff.  My farthest is still a 169 Pro Wraith.  Try the high speed stuff and see if it fits your hand.  It doesn't work for some.  Definitely try a lighter weight, it usually equals more glide, less dive.
