The Dave Pitner Memorial - May 1st-2nd, 2010 B-TIER
This event was formerly the Irish You the Best of Luck tournament held in March. 3 years ago, while running the first "Irish" tournament (held in Elk Grove Village), I received a phone call to immediately go to the hospital because my dad (Dave Pitner) had suffered a heart attack. I arrived at the hospital and found out that he was dead upon arrival. The following year the event was moved to Channahon - a larger venue for a larger tournament. Now the event has moved to the month of May for the warmer weather and his birthday was in May. He was a Christian, a disc golfer, a former volunteer fireman, a computer systems programmer, and a great dad.
David Scott Pitner - May 11, 1959 - March 3, 2007, died at the age of 47.
tryed to register today the web site to regu=ister at keeps telling me there is an error that i have entered the wrong postal code i know where i live and i know my postal code fix this problem please
That's part of the google checkout system that I don't have access to - it's asking you for the billing address zip code, so if you get your statements mailed elsewhere (or if you are paperless and you moved and you haven't updated your address with the credit card) try a previous zip code. I doubt that it would complain about a 5 digit versus a 9-digit zip code. If not, you can either pay via PayPal, send me a check/money order in the mail, or if you want I can arrange for a phone call to take the cc over the phone and run it through my own system.
I sent you a money order, with my PDGA # and DIV. I made it payable to paper or plastic
registered on line

thx scott cant wait
mailed the check today.
Takes care of IOS#1 and #2. Will be signing up for #3 and #5 next month. Will be in Canada for IOS #4 sorry. The smallmouth bass are calling. Didn't get to go last year. And have had that week off work since Jan 1st.
Scott i only see one pereson pre reg for this tourny on the PDGA website, are you gonna update that or not?
only time in my life i would be considered a favorite
if only 1 player shows, is it really a tournament
or are they at the wrong course
or is it the wrong date
I have a handful of registrations that I hope to put up soon. I've been trying to concentrate on taxes to get all of that out of the way!
What is the pre-reg deal this year? I'm sure I could go look it up, and I probably will, but this way I can bump the thread! ;D
thanks for the bump, Bruce :) Players save $5 when they pre-register! So it's $30 for AM's, $50 for Pro's when you mail in your pre-reg. $33/$53 online, but $35/$55 at the tournament. Pre-registration is definitely the way to go!
Minimum $500 added cash to the pro purse. Frank always puts a lot of time and effort into this course, and the park district has been awesome to work with. This is going to be a great day!
It's showing "IOS #1 The Dave Pitner Memorial - MPO, MA2, MA4" as a 2 day event on Saturday and Sunday. I'm guessing that is supposed to only be a one day thing and should be changed on the PDGA site?
Yes, it should be two single day events.
I did send an email to Karolyn about this as soon as I saw the post - hopefully it will be corrected early next week. That can get confusing!
Should be a fun day! Frank always does a fantastic job with the course. We'll probably do the same 3 temp holes - the one long shoot down the treeline after 18 (does the backup on this temp hole ever get super bad?), and then one with nasty OB near the basket followed by another playing back towards the baseball field. I'll have to confirm that no baseball will be going on from that field as well!
last year we got to the 1st temp after 18 and 2 other 4 somes were still waiting to drive.they were waiting till others completed the hole, when clearly it's safe to drive after others throw their 2nd shots.
Could always help the flow by having the group ahead take their upshots and then "spot" for the group behind to drive before finishing up the hole. That way the flow stays a bit more consistent since there's always someone in every group that at one point, on their best drive ever, with a huge tailwind threw it that far and so the group ahead has to hole out completely before they throw it in the woods.
that's a good idea Taylor. I don't like the other option of shortening the hole. I could lengthen it by 100+ feet so that "that guy" would be well on their way to setting world distance records if they could throw that far (from a grass tee no less). Then I would definitely tell people to drive once the group ahead of them is out of range.
Another option would be to split the hole into two, maybe tucking something in to the right side - not sure how close the water runs there or how wet it gets. The 2nd half I'd probably put the basket beyond the service road, keeping it at still a decent length and not just an easy 2. Unless I get a 4th basket, I would then extend #21 to about 350-400 with the entire path and beyond OB. That might lead to backups as well, but since 20 (the 2nd half of the long hole split) would take longer to play than 18 does, it would help alleviate it a little bit.
Scott. in my opinion, leave it the way it is. I took 3, 3 on it last year, and made up strokes on everyone in the group. It is a challenging par 3. Every group just needs to realize, that after the group on that hole all throw shot #2, they are typically not going to reach any of that group on their drives, unless like Taylor said they have a tailwind, and pull something out of their butts. They don't have to wait till hole is completed by group ahead. That is the main reason for the backup.
If your looking at a option #2, maybe have Open divisions and Advanced divisions play the tee as you have it set up, but all other divisions play from a shorter tee? Maybe that keeps the recs, ansd intermediates out of the woods on the drives. Leave basket where it was.
Just a thought

It's not even just on holes like that. Hole 9 (both tees probably) and 14 (from the longs, not the shorts) are the same way. Yes, a select few can hit the green or interrupt someone putting, but for the most part it's a drive, an upshot and a putt. So to save time, each group can help facilitate by spotting for the group behind for 45 seconds and it speeds it up by a few minutes per group, easily.
Are you ready for the first IOS??? I hope you are! I have a good chunk of pre-reg's that I need to get up on the site, make sure to pre-reg and help us get everything arranged for the day. It's just a mere 10 days away!
The event logo is attached. My Dad was a volunteer fireman for just under 10 years from about '83 - '92 in Barrington. That's the inspiration behind the logo. If I get this stamped, it will just be on Gateway discs due to the limited timeframe. I wasn't going to have a logo, but my mom asked me to make her a shirt. I probably will not order a stock of shirts, but if you're interested send me a PM asap and I'll order you one.
IOS #1 ace pool starts at $308!!!
IOS #1 Hotstamped Discs are in! 140 Gateway discs - all putters. All 4 models, various flex's. Come out and celebrate in the memory of my dad at the Dave Pitner Memorial. $500 added cash to the pro men purse!
That stamp looks very nice! Scott check your PM's.

You might as well hand that over to Dave K. He aced at Channy league on Tues. and Weds. this week. Ace machine is Dave K.
Will hole 11 be in that short position for the tournament?

He will still be required to hit it! We won't be giving it to him at the player's meeting. :D
Will someone be doing lunch at the tourney (specifically Sunday)? I don't know of anywhere to eat near the course.
There is a McDonalds across the interstate. 4 mins away.

Thanks, I always get off the highway and go straight to the course. Never explored the surrounding area.
theres all knids of places to eat right off the exit, subway, quiznos, TBK
I see the weather channel shows a 40% chance of rain on Sunday. I hope the weather men there are like the ones here in the Peoria area, usually wrong.
Rain really wouldn't bother me, but the 40-45 mph winds we have here today would.
accuweather.com has been very good to me when looking ahead to the weekend:
Saturday: High 73, winds at 6mph, gusting to 16mph, no rain expected
Sunday: High 68, winds at 14mph, gusting to 26mph, 0.08" rain during a 1 hour period possibly.
All things considered, I'll take it!
Unfortunately while I have a good crew out there helping me run the tournament, I couldn't get my family to commit to grilling up some food. If my dad was still alive I know he would be ALL OVER IT! He loved to grill for the masses. It's something I want to do in the future at this event, but unfortunately it will not be this weekend.
As far as food near the course - if you go back to where 55 intersects with Rt 6, there's the TBK, McDonald's, Quizno's, that was already mentioned. If you continue to head west you'll hit Subway and some other places. If you take McClintock east to the end - follow 6 east a little bit, then take Empress Rd north over I-80 (2.5 miles one way), you'll hit another Subway, Burger King, and a bunch of other things.
at 10:27pm: PRE-REG IS AT 52 for Saturday, 40 for Sunday. Make sure to get signed up! We max at 105 each day, and I know the J-Town guys like to sign up the day of the event, so it's going to be packed!
Also a cooler with a couple of sandwiches, fresh fruit/veggies and water can make for a really relaxing lunch at the park.
dominicks > pre made subs , bananas, bag of chips , gatoraid
i saw the hats on his list and was wondering if that would be part of the lunch deal
Ill see you sunday
In advance
thanks for running the T
hole 2 question
out of bounds
railroad ties or wet
i actually wetn to the left of the ties
and was dry
are you going to draw a line of some sort
is the creek there fairly dry or is there still some water depth? Typically I just call it as completely surrounded by water you are OB. If the creek bed is dry out there, then I'm going to have to say it's in between the ties, inside the bed area you would be OB. The path for crossing if you manage to stop on that will be IN.
we're up to 60 for Saturday and 41 for Sunday, fun times!
is hole 11 goin to be in that short pin? When i was there yesterday the 10 meter circles were off a bit there were 2 lines on some of the holes prolly about a foot or 2 from each other
I'm guessing 11 is going to be in the new location - I know Frank was working on it, but I hadn't heard if he had finished. He has a lot going on right now as well. He also placed the 10 M circles, sounds like he had to do it in a hurry as well. You could carry a tape measure if you are super concerned, but I'll announce that if there is a question the group can come to a consensus and give benefit of the doubt to the player.
We are up to 65 players on Saturday and 47 on Sunday. Accuweather.com currently has removed rain from the daytime forecast entirely for both days now. Yay for answered prayers!

Scott, there is an interesting discussion going on now at on the pdga board on this issue. I strongly believe that if the circles are close to accurate you should state that they rule and no measurements are needed. This will avoid any bickering about where the line should be. This will not happen in my, Novice, division. However, money will be on the line in the pro pool. I would like to see Brett's take on this.
The new 11 looks very cool and much more challenging than the temp basket. That is going to be a very cool hole. I was there last week and saw the "green" with no basket. I hope the basket is there now. What is the distance on the new pin placement?
any final decision on the 1st temp hole after regular #18? Thanks.

i dont think 11 is going to be in the new spot i was there yesterday and it was and in the short pin and had the 10 m painted around it
I was out at Channahon today, The course is looking great. No new basket on 11 yet, but its ready to go in. it was windy out there but i love it... ;D
wherever the basket is on 11, that's where it's going to be lol. I'm presuming it will be wherever Frank painted the 2M circle. I'm letting him have control over the course setup.
first temp after 18 is going to remain the same - if anything it will be longer to put it out of reach of the "once upon a time when there was super tons of wind I parked a hole this long" type of thrower. I'll also ask people to tee when the group ahead of them is out of range.
For the circle - since it was created with the attempt to be accurate, it will be the governing line. if your disc is in between the two lines, then the interior line is the governing line. Again, benefit of the doubt to the player. It would help to know how many of those circles are like that and what holes specifically. I will not be able to walk the course before the tournament tomorrow.
only 33 spots remaining tomorrow!
pre-reg is up to date as of 7:20pm:
72 players Sat: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10287 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10287)
49 players Sun: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10289 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=10289)
30 spots left @ 8:14pm!
The circles are good out there. A few holes have 2, with the correct one being the outside one. There should be no confusion.
Thanks, Scott. Looking forward to it.
Thanks to Frank for the 10M Circles and for the hard work out there.
25 spots left for Saturday!
lets add a challenge how about on the holes with 2 circles make in between the lines OB.
lol yeah... let's not :)
little late
go back in town late
channy played windy yesterday

i concur
I was dry but , a line should be drawn

thanks to Larry who found a disc left in middle of fairway
good luck today , c u Sunday
Round 1 Scores were posted about 45 minutes ago.

Max field of 105 - added a 22nd basket, will probably keep it at 22 for Sunday. We tee'd off at 2:10pm for round 2.
if it was 22 holes, how was a 53 only -10 on pdga.com?
Still spots open for Sunday?
Re: 53 being a -10, Scott probably hasn't gone into the admin page to tweak the number of holes. I'm sure he'll correct it after the weekend is done.
Fixed the round layouts based on 22 holes. It bumped the unofficial ratings by 3 in many cases.
Round 2 scores are up!

Any open spots for Sunday? What are numbers?
???
i would like to know also thinkin of comin back for tomorrow
hopefully both of you guys came out shooting right now, but 70 players came out to play today, very nice!
ACE FUND WAS HIT. Michael Fierke aced #20, the 2nd temp hole. If no additional aces are hit during the 2nd round, that ace is worth $744.
Sunday's results are posted :)

Nice job by Scott. Thanks to Frank Grimes for taking an average course and making it something special.
Also thanks to Frank and to Taylor for helping me find lost discs.
I had a great time, first time playing at Channahon, love the course.
The score got mixed up in rec, Shawn got 78 I got 75 in rec , 2nd round sunday,no biggy.
Saturday was not the first IOS that Scott was the merch guy for but it was the first IOS that he was the tournament director for. Actually it was the first IOS that had a tournament director that was not me!
I enjoyed my roll as volunteer for Sunday's IOS event and not having to be there the whole weekend was like a vacation! I truly appreciate Scott taking on so many tournaments for the series this year. Great job Scott!
Chris - I fixed the scores - gave you about a 25 point boost!
hey Scott the scores are not adding up correctly
Excellent day for disc golf on Saturday. Thanks for all the hard work Scott and crew!

I would say so...
yes, I count hole 9 long as par 4. It doesn't make a difference to the PDGA in the long run anyway though.

I didnt know that the longs par was 67 Sry i though it was 66 like the shorts
The only time that changing a hole's par makes a difference is when it comes to penalties that are par + x throws. Like the late for a round penalty.
