Title: Discontinuum 2010 Bag Tag Challenge
Post by: tacimala on January 28, 2010, 08:20:50 AM
To make it easier to keep track of who has bag tags and when they change hands, I have set up a league on Disc Golf Scene for the 2010 bag tags:

http://www.discgolfscene.com/leagues/Discontinuum_2010_Bag_Tags

The league is mostly up to date and for those that are interested, you should sign up for Disc Golf Scene (free) and you can post challenges, scores, results of tag matches, etc. I use it to keep track of all of my scores actually and you can also get achievements for shooting well at tourneys and leagues.

Your information will be synced up automatically if you include your PDGA number (I entered all those in on DGS already) or if you are not a PDGA member, all I would need is an email address to sync it up.

If you don't want to sign up and a tag changes hands, feel free to post here and I'll update it on that site.

Any questions? I know I left it pretty short and sweet.

So a few other cool things about the site:

- All of your profiles are synced up to tourneys and leagues by PDGA number. Just by signing up you will probably have some rounds stored under your name if you've played lots of local tourneys over the past year or so.

- You can add friends kind of like on Facebook or other social networking sites.

- You can then challenge those friends to rivalries. Now practice rounds mean a little more when you are out there. Bragging rights go a long way!

- You get achievements for winning leagues or tourneys, cashing in tourneys, shooting hot rounds, etc. Aces are also achievements.

- Running leagues through the site is easy as well and can take care of scoring, keeping track of money won and so on.

- If you play the same courses a lot, it can be good to keep track of your averages and see those over time. The stats feature on the site can do that, as long as you are keeping all the scores. Good for stats junkies.

- You can add photo galleries, which makes it easier to share photos of courses.

- Yadda, yadda, yadda

that site is awesome Taylor. But why does it say PDGA# not verified??

nevermind, it is there now.

On a different note though. I got my tag in the mail today. I received 32, but I thought it was 33?? hope thats not too big of a deal?

I'm guessing Tom switched you and the other 32/33 around then, so I'll update that on DGS as well.

??? ;D not sure were to ask this question but i figured this was as good a spot as any.  do i get anything besides a high five and a pat on tha back for ending tha year with the #1 tag?  just wondering

To be honest, I don't even know who had what tag at the end of the year. That is the goal of this system so as to make it more of a challenge and to raise awareness for the tags and the club in general.

;D O0 ;D ya I'm just wondern if this is all just for bragn rights, or actually for something.  i thought years back there used to be something paid out to the top 5 or 10 or whatever.  plus are their rules on defending tags or are we supposed to be OK with people just sittn on the top tags.  I defended #1 through 2 tourneys, and something like 10 challenges but that doesn't mean the next person even has to do it once if there are no real guidelines.  i love the bag tag challenge it gives you more reasons to take the random round more seriously, witch helps keep me in check, and lord knows i need that.  i guess its just alot of thought for a simple question. thx

...you thought about it so much you actually answered your own question.  ;)

There are no real guidelines anymore, for all the reasons you hit upon. I look at it as a 'strictly for fun' thing; I couldn't find my tag most of the time last year, and I'm not one to volunteer to run a bagtag challenge at a tournament, for one example.

it's a nice little perk for being part of a great club, but really nothing beyond that unless somebody wants to make it a project.

Well now that people can know who has what tags, it'll make it easier to even try something like that. Perhaps next year.

why not this year? you have it set up and you got a couple months of winter to figure it out.

One reason we decided to move away from prizes is the fun factor. Players with top tags ran into hiding knowing prizes and money were on the line. We have tried to offer as much as possible with a club membership.

Post by: Dan Michler on February 03, 2010, 09:02:13 AM
I don't think there is a good way to setup a fair system to pay out for tags at the end of the year.  It'll only result in far more complaints and headaches than its worth.  I like the current system.  The tag is primarily something to put on your bag and represent the Club.  Tag challenges are a fun side-game.  If you start paying out for the top tags, then less skilled players (a majority of the Club) may not want to participate in a gamble that they have no chance to win.

If you want to play disc golf for money, then play Open at PDGA tournaments or gamble on the side with your friends.  I would not advise forcing everybody who wants to be a Club member to participate in a cash game.

If there are enough who really really want to have a payout for tags, perhaps they could pay extra to get in the Tag Challenge Cash Payout game?  The highest ranking of those who paid to participate get the prizes.  Somebody would have to volunteer to keep track of this.
Title: Re: Discontinuum 2010 Bag Tag Challenge

And there would have to be rules in place on accepting challenges, minimum number of matches, etc. For how widespread locations are in the club that would make it tough to actually happen.
Title: Re: Discontinuum 2010 Bag Tag Challenge
Post by: PHishHead on February 03, 2010, 01:17:51 PM
how about something easy like the top 5 tags at the end of the year get a free club membership the following year.   That way the tags are still for fun but there is a point along with supporting the club
Title: Re: Discontinuum 2010 Bag Tag Challenge
Post by: Stan the Blue Man on February 03, 2010, 01:50:35 PM
Ok sound fun but there will be a high chance that the top 5 tags will not show up or accept challenges so there has to be a penalty or a consequence of lost the tag or something.  Has to be a fair chance for everyone
Title: Re: Discontinuum 2010 Bag Tag Challenge
Post by: smyith on February 03, 2010, 06:54:57 PM
thats easy, here a few ways to do it:
1) at tournaments all club members participating are automatically entered. whether they have their tag or not (their responsibilty to get to the right player if they dont bring it). Obviously yes there could be complications but really it shouldnt be hard (if you nay say youre probably one of "those" people).

2) since everyone knows who has what tag (thanks to the tracker) tags 1-5 are required to defend their tag "x" amount of times in a month.

3) have all tag challenges posted in a sticky thread. that way everyone can see what is happening.

4) every weekend you could have tag challenges (before or after leagues or instead of). move around the area from course to course so everyone can make it there eventually.

just what comes off the top of my head

um i think you guys were right.  this has already become a little to complicated a conversation let alone the task of actually going through it all.  its not an easy thing fit everybody to show up and play now on league and tourney dates let alone if u add in more rounds of tags, and controled tags rounds at that.  i guess the braggn rights and extra competition is the correct way to roll  why fix whats not broken

In theory it would be fun to have a prize at the end for the top 5 or whatever tags.

Personally speaking, I drew the #3 tag.  I am happy to put it up whenever I play a singles round.  The problem is that I don't have the opportunity to play very often, so being required to play x times a month simply wouldn't work.  I'm lucky if I play 2x a month and lately that is doubles and in the summer it's tournaments that might be local but are also often in michigan and elsewhere.

If the club is willing to sponsor the free memberships, you could do something like top 5 tags held by players that competed in x tag matches during the year.  No matter how you structure it though, it will be overly complicated.
Title: Re: Discontinuum 2010 Bag Tag Challenge
Post by: Dan Michler on February 04, 2010, 12:46:04 PM
Honestly, I feel like the current system is working great.  I notice other people playing for tags on a weekly basis throughout the summer despite the fact there is no prize.  Obviously nobody really cares at the end of the year how it all ends up, but its something to play for and trade back and forth throughout the year.

Its perfect for groups of players who have a wide range of skill levels.  Example:  I play a round with Brett, McManus, and Stan.  We don't want to play doubles.  On the rare instance that Stan, Tom, or I manage to beat Brett, its nice to take his tag away from him.  What else are we going to play for?  I sure as hell am not betting even 50 cents that I'm going to beat somebody rated 50 points higher than me in a singles round.  You play for tags!  Cuz they don't mean jack!  But when you beat somebody better than you, its sweet to watch them unhook their #2 tag and admit defeat.  It creates competition.  Which at the end of the day, might make you a better disc golfer.

Post by: pdga#7648 on February 04, 2010, 02:23:38 PM
I have not done one of these in years. Can we challenge anyone at anytime? Or are certain tournaments for tags? Being that I am over 3 hours away from 85% of other tag holders, tournaments are the only way I could get a better tag.

We played for cash in Peoria years ago, only to not get paid at the end of the year. So this way seems to be the best way. For fun and the competition of trying to get rid of #32 out of 33  ;)

Sorry for the noob question, but this is my first DG club...  Is this bag tag challenge basically any time club members play pick-up rounds, they exchange tags based on the round scores, lowest scores getting the lowest tag numbers?  Do you guys do this only on specific rounds/occasions, or pretty much any time you play together?  Either way, it sounds like a lot of fun!  I'm looking forward to giving someone my highly prestigious #86 tag...although with my luck/skill I'll probably end up getting one in the 90's in return, hehe.

Guys play for tags all the time. We don't have any set rules that you have to play for tags, but most people do. Someone usually will step up and run tags at an event.

No problem. I enjoy helping the club any way I can. And, I know how it is to sit and wait after a bad day, and maybe people want to get back on the road. So after my 2nd round, I put my bag away, then went and got the scores. The handing them out was not hard, as all but 1 guy was at the pavilion, and I knew everyone this time.
This is actually the 2nd time I have done tags at a tourny, and I must say, I am thinking about doing it at every one I go to as, a 1st and a 5th, not to shabby  ;D
