Title: Collegiate Disc Golf Championships
Post by: KenGmoney1 on January 28, 2010, 02:12:56 PM
Does anybody know anything about this tournament?  I plan to bring the Western Illinois Disc Golf Club.  I talked to the TD today and he hyped it up a lot, told me that it will be by far the best tournament I play this year.

Ken,

Can you send me the TD's Name and Email...  We would like to sponsor a hole and I am sure Miles at Paragon would love to talk to him...

Thanks,

Trotter

Ken....I know Neil really wants to go.  He is a NIU student and no one around here was planning on it.  I don't know his last name but he is from round lake area, but lives in dekalb now.  He would really benefit the team.  Brett probably know his last name....

I think his last name is DNF.  Kenny knows him.

The University just approved for us to go to the event today.  They may even help pay for hotels and food.  We have a solid team that we are bringing to the event, we have three members that have won at least one advanced tournament this past year.

The Collegiate  Disc Golf Championships is what I have been looking forward to since I started the WIU Disc Golf Club a few years ago.  Going to an event like this is worth all of the work I have put to the club over the years.

Also the WIU Disc Golf Club Will be holding a tournament on campus at the Sipolt Memorial Disc golf Course on Saturday March 6, 2010

-More details to come.

In order for somebody to go the the event and be classified under the banner of Western Illinois University and part of the disc golf club they have to be a current full time WIU student with a GPA of at least 2.5.

I am sure NIU could put together a team.
You have to be an AM to play the event so I think Neil would not be allowed.

This event has started to catch on, at least by the looks of the list of interested first-timers.  Pete May is running this, folks may also know him as the older gent who takes on all comers at the annual USDGC ping pong tourney (and kicks their collective butts).  He's a past world champ from back in ping pong's heyday and picked up disc golf later in life than most.  Quite the character.  I think he promotes barrel riding as well.  Get a team of players together, have yourselves a fund-raiser event to defray costs, and have a fun road trip.

The shirts will all be hand made by WIU disc golf club members.  I think they will be made with silk screen.  The shirts will be $10 each.

They will be very nice!  The guys in the club know how to make them.

I will upload an image of what they will look like by the end of the week.  The shirts will be ready before our tournament on campus on March 6.

Thanks for your support!

Grayson,

WIU is a good scool for Disc Golf. Our club has been getting better and more recognized around campus.
My first two years I lived in the dorms, I was able to see the 9 hole course from my window.
And the 18 hole course Everwood is one of the best in IL.

My new favorite thing to do is take the 30 min trip to Hamilton to play Wildcat Springs

Today the university (sports council) decided to give the disc golf club $250 in financial assistance to help us pay for hotels at the National Championship.

That is very generous and much needed for us to afford this trip.

That's sweet.  Maybe if you are lucky they'll loan you a van to make the trip in.  Might take a member with a chauffeur's license or something, but it couldn't hurt to ask.  We used to get a vehicle from the U of MI to travel when I was on a club sports team (bowling), back a few decades.

Best of Luck, Kenny!
I'll take an XL shirt also.

We've been trying to revive our disc golf club here at Parkside but we just don't have anyone that wants to step up. Carla is back in school so we're working things out for here to start it up again.

Anyone know of any golfers looking to go to college, let me know. I work in Admissions and will help as best I can  ;)

If we want to we can rent a van from the school. But they charge a lot for us to do that.  We are trying to make this trip an inexpensive as possible.  We plan to drive down in one of our cars all together.  It is a 14 hour drive, but we have 5 drivers.

Title: Re: Collegiate Disc Golf Championships
Post by: KenGmoney1 on February 24, 2010, 10:44:51 AM
Here is the format.

Thursday    2 rounds of alternate shot doubles (2 groups, keep better score per hole)  = 2 scores
Friday         2 singles rounds (4 players per school, keep best 3 scores per round)     = 6 scores
Saturday    2 singles rounds (4 players per school, keep best 3 scores per round)      = 6 scores
Sunday      1 doubles round alternate shot  (2 groups, keep better score per hole)      = 1 score
                                                                                                                           = 15 scores total

Each doubles round teams of 4 players split into 2 doubles teams. Each team of 2 play alternate shot doubles. There will be 2 schools per card, so 4 teams of doubles per card. For each hole, the better score from a school is recorded for that hole. So if Alabama doubles group 1 shoots a 4 on hole 1 and Alabama doubles group 2 shoots a 2 on hole 1, then a 2 is recorded for Alabama for that hole. If the next hole Alabama group 1 scores 3 and the 2nd group scores a 4, then a 3 is recorded for hole 2, etc. So after the round Alabama will have 1 score they record.

We drove all night and made it to Georgia this afternoon.  We made a stop at the International Disc Golf Center.  We played the WR Jackson course designed by John Houck.  It is a par 69 course 9319 feet.

The scores were
Kenny   65
Ryan     72
Scott     74
Jon       74
Nick       90

While out on the course we bumbed in to Billy Crump.  Keep an eye out for some footage of us throwing on the course for the Masters.

I heard from PDGA Driector Brian G. that there will be some pros at the event to help make it seem more official.  Some of the people that may be here are Kenny Climo, Barry S., Avery J. and Cam Todd.

We played two really nice courses today ay the Hippodrome.  There are all kinds of tricky things out there, hanging baskets, basket in the ground, baskets with really tall poles, and on hills, cliffs behind, etc,..

Feldberg was out there, Garrett Gurthie was there with team FL,  Billy Crump doing interviews with all the schools.

We have two rounds of alternate shot doubles tomorrow to start the event.

After day one of the tournament Western Illinois is in the lead.   We played two rounds of doubles today, shooting a 38 (-16) in round one from the red tees at the hippodrome and a 44 (-10) on hogback.

They are making this event one to remember,  the tournament started with someone singing the star spangled banner at hole one with a huge flagpole from the basket. Next they had Barry Schulz give us all some words of wisdom.

After the tournament they had a dedication of a bridge for Ken Climo, it is a bridge on a hole that he got a 2 on in the 2006 worlds that he won.  It is called the climo bridge.

There was also a putting clinic with Dave Feldberg and Cam Todd.

There is a really great atmosphere here, this is a wonderful disc golf experience.

Today we played singles, they seperated us into two pools and we had 2 players play on each course in the morning and swap courses for the afternoon round.  We get to keep the best three out of the four scores for each course.

Our top three rounds at the hippo from the blue tees were -5, -1 and Even for a total  of (-6)
Our top three rounds at the hogback course were -4, -4, and -2 for a total of (-10)

That puts us at -42 after day 2.  Not sure exactly where the other schools are but we are still one of the top teams.

Tomorrow we play singles again but we play the black tees at the hippo which are the longest, and the hogback course again.

I would guess that the top three teams right now are WIU, Augusta State (home team), and Alabama Burmingham.

Barry was out there all day spoting for us and Billy Crump was out there filming for the Clash DVD that they are making for the College National Championship.

way to go Team WIU. They built on their lead. -42. 3 strokes ahead of Oregon, and 7 ahead of the Host School Augusta State. The defending champs, Mississippi St. is 13 strokes off the lead!!!
Scott Parik is 1 stroke off the medalists for singles. The last day for that is tomorrow. The top 6 in singles makes the All American Team. Cmon Scott. Play smart tomorrow, and that should be a lock! with 5th and 6th being -5 now, to his -9

GOOD LUCK ALL!!!!
