I am not sure how many victories the Sox will end up with, but it will have to be a pretty amazing play to be the play of the year over the play that Buerle made today.
What a great start and an overall look at what this year should be. From great hitting to timely offense and speed on the basepaths. Oh, and the relievers. Buerhle's play and Rios' catch to end the game should easily make tonight's top 10. GO SOX!
Griffey Jr. retiring last night. Its strange to see how far he fell out of the limelight over the last 10 years. When I was growing up, he was by far the most popular player. I was obsessed with collecting Griffey cards when I was 10-14 yrs old, as were most of the other kids. Its hard to remember how good he was because of how inconsequential he's been over the last decade due to one devastating leg injury after the next. Looking at his career stats for his core years of productivity ('90-'07), its conservative to say he missed 3 1/2 seasons of real productivity due to injury. He still ended with 630 HR. Give him those years back and he cruises by Babe Ruth at 714 HR. That part was a shame, but clearly still one of the greatest careers of all-time.
very true Dan. I still have his rookie card. The sweetest left handed swing I ever saw. effortless. And he was truely one of the luckiest players of all time,,,,given the fact he got to play on a team with his father!
And never once has this guy been linked to any illegal substance. One of the best I ever got to watch play.

Unless you count the Simpson's episode where Mr. Burns gives Griffey "nerve tonic", resulting in gigantism. 8)
sox will sweep cubs this weekend
fun game last night
ball flying out of the cell
hopefully first place at the break
2nd half should be fun
go white sox
In case you didn't know, Ozzie just wanted to remind everybody that he is a fantastic guy and the only one looking out for Latino ballplayers.

Yeah, the Cubs have given up about 50 hits in the last 2 or 3 games. Maybe Lou needs to make a statement of some kind.
Yawn.
Lou already did. He is quitting on his team at years end. His polite way of saying this orginization sucks!! ;D
I love that a link to a front page story about Ozzie on the 2010 White Sox thread elicits 2 posts that are only about the Cubs. You guys just keep feeding into the Sox fan stereotype. The Cubs suck? Really??!! That is groundbreaking news guys. This is why you average 12,000 less fans per game than the Cubs when the Cubs are in 5th place and the Sox are in 1st.
Instead of wetting yourself because the Cubs are having their 47th rough season in the last 50, maybe you should purchase a ticket and go watch your 1st place team?
Since you guys want to talk about the Cubs, I will oblige you :D
I'm actually excited for the future of this team. Thinking back, I can't remember a significant everyday top notch position player out of our own farm system since Mark Grace. Its been 1 failed top prospect after another (i.e. Corey Patterson, Felix Pie, Kevin Orie, Gary Scott, Bobby Hill, Hee Seop Choi, Jerome Walton, Dwight Smith...on and on). This is the single biggest reason we haven't won despite having one of the top 5 payrolls each year. Even the Yankees were unable to buy a team and win a WS without players from their own farm system. They only broke their drought of the 80's and early 90's when Jeter, Posada, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, etc... came along out of their own system. You can not win without talent from your own system, plain and simple. The 90's Braves are the best example of this.
Right now with Colvin, Castro, and Soto I think the Cubs have the best chance to finally produce a position player. Soto appears to be back to the form of his rookie year. I have been in love with Colvin since spring training and he just keeps getting better, that catch he made last night in the 1st inning showed how athletic and talented this guy is. Castro is only 20 and has alot of improving to do, but he is certainly serviceable at his young age. I'd like to think that 3 or 4 years from now, these 3 guys will be the core of our team. We will be past the Soriano, Fukudome, Lee, and Ramirez era and able to spend our money (hopefully more wisely this time) on some players, not to create a team, but to compliment a solid core that already exists.
I've waited this long, I can wait 3 more years for a championship. Hopefully the Cubs front office has this mentality and will not jump on aging veterans with long-term deals in a desperate effort to win now. Its going to be rough watching Soriano for the next 4 years, but at least I've got Colvin and Castro to keep me optimistic.
keep wishing Dan. If they couldn't win 2 years ago, with all that talent. They wont be winners in 3-4 years, or even 30-40 years. I mean cmon, it's the Cubs! All they know is how to dissapoint, and they are very good at that. The kids wont be able to turn around that losing franchise!
We know early next year you will post the topic 2011 Cubs, and we will practically cry from laughing so hard.
Oh wait, The Brewers scored again!! ;D 18-1
But when you do post it, please put in there again how the underachieving Cardinals will be lucky to win the division, AGAIN!
But on the real topic... the Sox will have a tough time holding off the Twins.
Pujols get the $ he derserves and is in in a Cubs uniform in 2012? I'm hoping for Lebron 2 and watch all those cards fans weep.
Brett? did u fall and bump your head?
Pujols will not be a CUB! He already said he wants to win Championships. Why would he go to where no titles in 102 years? As a Cards fan, after we didn't get Oswalt from Philly, I know Pujols will be in St. Louis for his entire career. Had Oswalt signed, his 16mil in 2012 would have taken away from Pujols, and he might have been a Yankee. But now with Ludwicks salary gone, and getting money in the Ludwick deal, They made room for Alberts contract extension, for the rest of his career.
You Cub fans sure do dream BIG! :D
AND, even if the Cubs got him, they would find a way to lose.
Or make another Ernie Broglio for Lou Brock trade. The worst trade in MLB history. :o Broglio played 2 and a half more seasons, to where Brock was the stolen base leader for years, and is in the HOF.
Why is a Cardinals fan bashing the Cubs in a White Sox thread?
Its possible Pujols, who looks as juiced as anybody, wants to distance himself from Tony LaRussa, who is known to have been involved with with so many of the known steroid abusers of the past (McGwire, Ankiel, Canseco).
lmao, man they get funnier each and everytime. LaRussa is the 3rd all time winningest coach in MLB.
And 3 players?? thats not sooo many Dan.
He will stay where the best fans in baseball appreciate pure talent when they see it!

Dan brought up talking about the Cubs, I just joined in. As it is very easy to bash that team. ;)
I saw all this Cubs chatter. WTF. I agree with Dan and followed his advice...
bought ticket Friday.
Saw good fundamental play
in pretty full park.
I have made sooo much money on my favorite bet. Who will have the better record at the end of the year? Cubs or Sox?
Cubs fans (like Dannnney Mikklerrr) can argue all about some daydream that they have about the Cubbies (horrible nickname) having the better record at the end of the year, The fact is that the Sox have been the better team over the last 20 years. I don't care about attendance. The Cubs were on WGN for the last 500 years and garnered a bigger audience through better marketing. The Sox were on channel 26 or 44 or the other channel never watched channel in the USA.
The only reason the Cubbies (Horrible nickname) are the most watched team is that they are the "Lovable Losers".
Great nickname, and were on WGN, NOT that they were a good team.
I have personally had 5 'Lifelong Cub Fans' quit on the Cubbies (Horible Nickname) quit on the Cubbies this year. They have finally come to their senses and have decided NOT to support a team that has broken their hearts for ......102 YEARS!!!!!!
Now....Dannny Mikkelllller......go back to your Cubbies blog and get off of the White Sox Stream....Please....
lmao. could not have said it better myself!

If you review the thread you'll see I made a White Sox-only related post about Ozzie. Then it was the Sox fans that replied with the Cubs chatter on your thread, so you have only your own to blame for all the Cubs talk.
busch stadium was always fun to see a game
saw bears 84 vs cards
and several baseball games throughout the college years
84-88
new busch was cool as well
thread drift

I wonder if he'll play anywhere next year. He'd have to take a dramatic paycut from his current $18.7 million salary and he just doesn't seem that into it at age 38.
Bottom line, the Sox need some hitting and Manny does provide that when he's on the field. They got him without giving anything up, so there is no downside to this move. Even in a down year this season, he's still slugging .510 with a .405 on base. Those are very productive numbers if he plays every day for the Sox. Now if the Sox could get Jenks to stop blowing up in the late innings, maybe they'd have a shot at overcoming that 4 game deficit.
6 in a row on the road
nice
pitching and defense
if its first and third with no out, am I the only
one who thinks a sac fly gets the job down in that situation ?

MVP
# 14
at least one player on the team shows some toughness
improvement over last year for sure , but short of expectations
manny - other players seeing better pitchs but not executing
# 20 needs to go SAC FLY is a legitimate way to get one one in when there is a man on third with less than one out
better defense is needed and needs to be executed 100 % of the time ( see Twins )
cant be a hater as the sox dont seem to be able to compete with them
it would be nice to finish strong but some of the youth might see more playing time
pitching - starters fine
middle - arms needed as usual
closer - still a fan of # 45 when healthy ( all or nothing )
ozzie and kenny - please no more tweets toots tv shows
play baseball you idiots
amazing next years schedule comes out the same day they go 7 back
go bears !
Say it aint so! They gone.
This just in from the wild rumor department...
Unless the Sox make the playoffs, Ozzie will be out and Carlton Fisk will be the new manager of the Sox for next season.
dunn and aj add some Left side pop
# 14 back or not ?
I will say yes
but quintan will be gone
not sure why there are letting both jenks and putz go
starters look good with peavy healthy
if no # 14 then its teehan at 3rd ( arg) but viceindo at first
you gots to get that youth on the field
2011 AL Central Division Champs
as usual I predict the White Sox will beat the Cubs in the World Series

I think AJ is good, but 9 HRs, 56 RBIs and 270 BA is not exactly left side pop. I think you have to be over a certain age to want a White Sox Cubs World Series, which I am, and would be great.
With both Dunn and A.J. deferring money to re-sign Paulie, how can he say no? I know he wants to be closer to his family, but come on! He is the closest that the Sox have to a franchise player.
BTW, Morel will be at third, not Teahen.
Bye bye Bobby. You're good but the injuries just killed you. You're not worth the money you are due via contract. God help the Sox with no bonafide closer.
Should be a very interesting year.
A Cubs / Sox series?!?!?
OMG, Warfare!!! We'd all know what it'd be like to be in a gang. South side in blue / red ... Shot!!! North side in black / white ...Shot!!! That'd be CRAZY interesting
Not sure how the Dunn signing will be viewed a year from now.
He's only 31 and has been incredibly consistent with his HR totals whether it be in hitters parks (CIN) or in pitchers parks (WASH). From '04 to '10 he has hit between 38 and 46 HR every season. He plays every day and has no real injury history.
The concern I'd have is that last season his strikeouts went to an alltime high and his walk total took a sudden drop. He had between 101 and 122 walks every year from '04 to '09, then suddenly went down to 77 last season. Maybe it was a lack of protection in the Nats lineup or maybe this is the start of a downward trend.
Either way, its a hell of a lot better than signing Milton Bradley. At least you can have confidence that Dunn should be out there swinging for the fences for 150+ games the next 4 years and delivering 35+ HR from the left side, which the Sox certainly lacked.
Are you sure you want to re-sign Konerko? His numbers suddenly spiked at age 33, which means you'll have to overpay and give him more years, when logically you can expect his numbers to fall off next season. If you think he's repeating his .312 39 HR performance, you are extremely optimistic. I wouldn't be surprised if he still manages a .280 30 HR season though, which does make him a valuable player if the Sox do keep him.
With Dunn, Konerko, Pierre, Pierzynski, Buerhle, and Peavy, this team is looking pretty old. Better hope they can win now. Signing a bunch of aging veterans to long-term deals has the potential to blow up in your face and set you back a few years. Just ask the Cubs about that...

Good point. I think the Sox should offer value but not more than value for Konerko. He is at a difficult point in his career. He had an excellent year last year and has mostly, but not always, been worth the money. He is a good guy to have on the team and an average to above average fielder. Who know when he will reach the end of his usefull baseball life? If Konerko is willing to stay for market they should keep him. If his agent and he want to hit a home run it has to be in another park. The Sox have some older players. However, they have a core of young players as well. I agree that they are built to make a run now. If that does not work and they decide to dismantle the team they still have a tremendous double play combo and some young pitching around which they can build. rebuilding would not mean starting completely over..

I have a lifetime allegiance to neither club but in my youth I loved Chicago baseball. Today I find that I watch it only in passing. However, I said to a friend of mine a few years back that a Sox/Cubs series would be fun. He replied "No way would I wish for that! If WE lost THEY would NEVER let us live it down!" I was thinking "Seriously, that's why you wouldn't want a Chicago series? Because you might lose!?!?"
Anyway, I'm sure that he's not indicative of an entire team's fans so I won't say what colors he wears!
I typically root against the Sox, but would love to see a Cubs/Sox series. It would be the most exciting Chicago sporting event in history. If its good for baseball and Chicago, I'm for it.
