Title: Chain Reaction 2010 at Community Park, Channahon June 26 and 27
Post by: acesandchains on May 05, 2010, 06:09:51 AM
Looking forward to running my first event this year. I have stamped champion Katanas and XG Bosses for this event, and Champion Glow Gazelles and more Katanas for the Deuces Wild event two weeks later. This event is only $25 for amateurs if you are a PDGA member. Here is the info on the event in Channahon:

AM/Pro C-Tier tournament playing 2-18+ hole rounds for a total of 36+ holes. Extra holes may be added as needed. Cash payout for Pros, $100 added to the Pro cash pot.

Channahon is one of the premier disc golf courses in the Joliet area. This is the best kept course in the area (Great job as always Frank!) Come out and enjoy the beauty, and the challenge of Channahon.

Tentative schedule is as follows:

Saturday:

Jr. divisions
Recreational
Advanced

Sunday:

Novice
Intermediate
Pro divisions

Registration will be open from 8am-9am both days. Players meeting at approx. 9:15am, and tee off at approx. 9:30am both days.

A $10 discount is applied to all current PDGA members. Please select yes to PDGA# and provide your PDGA number in the comments section during checkout.

Pre-registration closes at 9pm on Friday, June 25th. Registration the day of the event is an additional $5.

Pre-registration is available at www.acesandchains.com

Thanks, Patrick.

Note - I juste edited it to add the date of the tournament to the subject line. It will help people to find the date better. - JB

I'm looking for some opinions and suggestions for players packs. Since the Am's entry fee is only $25 (for PDGA members), I'm debating how much to put into the players pack. What does everyone like to see in a players pack?

First of all, I really like your 25 dollar entry for all amateur divisions.  I've never received a strong argument for why amateur entries should increase with the more skilled divisions.

With a 25 dollar entry, I'm not expecting much in return as a player knowing you need to cover your expenses first.  That being said, for the player's pack I think players largely prefer a coupon of some sort that can be spent on any of your merchandise.  If thats not possible, I would just go with a safe choice for a disc.  A more recent mold is usually a safe choice (maybe a DX Roc or Aviar considering your low entry).  If I don't want to throw it, I can usually find somebody who is interested in trading for or buying the disc.  Please don't give me a T-shirt, towel, can coozy, or anything of that variety.  There is a very good chance it'll end up in the trash.  I would not recommend spending money upfront for the player's packs as you never know what kind of turnout you'll get.  Don't lose your money running a disc golf tournament.

You probably want to balance your player pack/payout value.  Some players will complain no matter what, but if you provide a huge player pack and then have little $ left to provide a payout, you'll hear more complaining because of the small payout.  These players won't realize the value that went into the player pack, or perhaps they don't care.

Great suggestions guys. Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it!

Just for the record, if I get minis, they will definitely be stash minis!  ;)

Based on the responses here, and on other forums, I've decided to have a $10 "pick your own" player pack this year. I think that is the right balance between giving everyone something for playing, while having enough of a payout to make the winners happy.

I am thinking about the idea of getting some t-shirts printed with the tournament logo on them. Already have one response here in favor of (and one against....sort of.) t-shirts. Anyone else who would be interested in one?

Tournament stamp can be seen here:

considering stash minis and their "use" (wink wink nudge nudge) is supportive of an activity that is illegal, especially during professional tournament play, I don't really recommend going that route.

From my experience, for every 1 player that wants tournament stamped stuff I can show you 10 that either don't want it or just plain don't care.  Some will get the stamp if it's cool enough or if that's all that I have in what they want, but I consistently see my stock stuff sell before the tournament stuff sells of the same item.

Players really enjoy pick your own player packs and pick your own prizes because typically it's something they are either going to use or have a use for it (reselling, giving it to their sponsor, practicing, etc etc).  You also need to decide if people have to cash out entirely that day or let it carry over to the next event.

Always make sure you have something to sell that is cheap, like $1 each so that people can use up the last couple dollars remaining on their prize money.

I cracked open the checkbook a few days ago and ordered some custom hardwood disc golf trophies for both of my tournaments. They will be replicas of an actual golf disc complete with the tournament stamp, and text saying 1st place and the division.

These are by far the sweetest trophies I have seen:

http://www.displayyourdisc.com/

When I get them, I will post a picture of the actual discs.

I ordered a first place trophy for each major division: MPO, Adv, Int, Rec, and Novice.

How sweet would it be to have one of these hanging on your wall?

I received this pic from Displayyourdisc showing the Pro Open trophy for the Chain Reaction tournament. It hasn't had any finish put on the wood yet, so it's going to look even better once it's done. See below for a taste of what the trophies will look like. I ordered a first place trophy for Men's Pro Open, Advanced, Intermediate, Recreational, & Novice for both tournys.

Now tell me that wouldn't look sweet on your wall?

I received the trophies yesterday. There is a first place trophy for Novice, Recreational, Intermediate, Advanced, and Pro Open. Here are some more pics of the finished product.

Results have been posted.

I'd like to give a big thanks to Frank Grimes for his countless hours of work getting the course ready for the tournament. Channahon is always a beautiful course, and that is due to Frank's constant effort to keep it that way.

I'd also like to thank Bill, Cory, Jon, and everyone else who helped out during the tournament. Thanks again!
