Title: 2010 Points Race
Post by: Tom McManus on June 23, 2010, 07:09:29 PM
Looks like a DISContinuum member may be able to take the AM Open points trophy home two years in a row.  Last year it was Dave Nelson and this year Kenny Glassman is in the lead almost half way through the year.  Matt Travis isn't far behind, currently in fourth place.

A "friend of Discontinuum" is on a roll in Advanced Women!   ;D

Kenny Glassman is well in the lead for AM Open points leader for 2010.  Matt Travis and Dave Nelson are in second and third.  Looks like it will be back to back wins for Discontinuum members.  Thanks to all the local TDs for running so many great events.

I'm more impressed by Dana Vicich in 21st for Open points than by the Am points participation award that is only available to those living in the midwest.

To be that high up in Open points, Dana has had to travel to both coasts and beat a lot of really good Open players.  Nice work.

Kenny is going to lay down the most points ever. That may be a record that may never be beat.

Kenny knows I'm on board his bandwagon and he certainly is impressive, but I'm not sure how you can compare points from 1 year to the next.  They have changes the rules to the points system drastically over the years.  They only started awarding points for major events a couple years ago which added thousands to the totals.  I'm sorry I have to be the realist here, but saying thats a record that will never be broken is ludicrous.

they need to reward more points for finishing in the top ten  in an A tier or a Major. You should be rewarded more for  beating the best players at an event.  Right now the current system they use is simple but just rewards the players that play alot of tourneys.  For example player A plays Nats ,worlds, bowling green, and finishes 9th, 4th, and 2nd. Then player B plays the same tourneys with the addition of the memorial and finishes 22nd, 30th, 19th, and 17th. player B would be in the lead of the points.

Congrats to kenny and dana, they both have had a successful year.  that is always nice to see from the local players.

Creating a format like the NT points race would be cool, but then it would add to players staying amateur longer in the end probably (not that I am advocating either direction, just a point).

Kenny Glassman has a solid lead on points and is looking to break the current points record for Advanced. The last three winners:
2009 Dave Nelson IL
2008 Chad Inman WI
2007 Dustin Fee IL
2006 Steve Slater IL
Anyone know who won the 2006 Points?

I think these names show that the Wisconsin/Illinois/Midwest has some great TDs who put on all the events and a very strong player base, as the way to get points is to finish ahead of your competition.

Kiralyn is leading in both Advanced Women and Junior Girls.  If you count pocket points, Kelsey is probably in second in Advanced Women.

Diana is in second in Adv Women of a Certain Age, but has the pocket points for first.

The current points system was intended to recognize players who play a lot of tournaments and play reasonably well, so it does not much offend my sensibilities that a lesser player can win the award simply by playing more tournaments.  It is more offensive to my sensibilities that to win the obelisk for age and gender restricted divisions, the best strategy is to almost never actually play in those divisions.  It is also foreblind that the system makes it much easier for a consistantly rated 930-934 amateur to get the necessary points in an age restricted division than it does for a 935-939 rated amateur.  I think you should get points for everyone you beat who played the same courses rather than for everyone who was arbitrarily assigned to your division by ratings caps.

The player's cost of the trophy is not the cost of all his sanctioned tournaments, but only the net cost of the tournaments that he would not have played otherwise.  Kira's obelisk will be free.  Kenny's too, for all I know.  My obelisks have always been pricey.  But worth it.

Congrats to Kenny Glassman for winning the 2010 Am Points Race.  Congrats to Matt Travis for second place and to Dave Nelson for finishing in the top five. Back to back wins by Illinois players and Discontinuum members is great.  Thanks to all the Illinois TDs who help to give Illinois players an opportunity at reaching their goals.

Nice job by Dana for finishing in the top 20 in the 2010 Open Points Race.  It is a lot of work to travel and play well week after week competing against consistently strong fields.

DISContinuum missed finishing 1,2,3 by 10 points in Advanced. Dave Nelson just missed third place.  Looks like Kenny logged in more events than any other disc golfer this year. 41 events.
