I am currently in the very very early stage of trying to get my university to add a course on campus, as we have a very hilly campus. I just wanted to see if it was possible and try to draw something up as a rough sketch prior to speaking to the administration. But I wanted to see, for a 9 hole or 18 hole course, roughly how much room would be required? I have messed around on Google Earth and seen that I could fit 18 400 ft holes fairly easily. How wide should fairways generally be? This is in the desert as well, so underbrush would be the only real thing to clear. Any advice you can give would be great.
2 things
1) contact EDGE. they work with schools quite frequently and could be a huge help
2) What school are you talking about? fairways depend on the trees around them. you basically want to avoid arrant shots going on other fairways. as not to affect play.
MIght want to take a look at some of PDGA's course design resources (http://www.pdga.com/course-development).
The school is called Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in Prescott, AZ. I found out that we already have 18 baskets, and the land to do it for sure, and we have easily 200 acres of property that is currently just hilly desert. There are almost no trees, but that is not unusual for this region. The primary obstacle would be the hills. I'll take a look at EDGE, and see what can be done there, and thanks for the link! That is very helpful!
Awww man Prescott is awesome! and that radio station "The Beat" i think was super sick. all old school rap/hip-hop. very jealous of you man. is any part of the land on the outcrop of sandstone? there could be some sick holes over there. your over by that lake right?
haha yeah, we are over by Willow Lake. Im impressed, not only someone who knows Embry Riddle exists, but where in Prescott it is. Some of the locals dont know where it is even. Prescott is a fun town, Ive enjoyed it here so far. I need to walk to the land to check for the granite areas, wouldn't surprise me, the Granite Dells around Wilow lake are right across the street, and those would make a very interesting course! If there are some of those, that could make for some huge elevation changes! Now that you mention that, maybe I will try playing a round of my own design over at Willow Lake. That could be fun, if I get the chance Ill take some pictures and put them up here!
You should see if any of your aviation instructors (if you took that route) would let you practice flying over that land and take pictures. That would be putting your education to good use!
haha well, I could take a plane, however Prescott airport is delta, and the campus is just on the departure end of the main runway, so Im not so sure the tower would like that too much. If I get lucky and sent over the area, I always have a camera though!
i dont think you get the same awesomeness of the landscape from a overhead picture. its entirely different when your there.
