The IOS has been dividing the major tasks for completing a successful tournament into 3 roles. These are Course TD, Event TD and Merch Man. The Merch Man is the biggest job of the three but probably also the most self explanatory. "Bring a boat load of merch!" The Event TD is responsible for pre-reg, day of reg, check-in, scorecards, leaderboard cards, TD of record with the PDGA, among other duties. The Course TDs responsibilities are outlined below. This is not a complete list but gives you an idea of what he/she does. Also please note that none of these roles is set in stone. When Brett, Bruce and I were doing all the IOS events Brett did the online pre-reg, for example.
For the 2010 season we did not write out these roles in advance and for that reason I felt that some of our events did not meet the standards that we had set for previous years. We decided that for 2010 we'd take on more TDs to help Brett and I from getting burned out and because of Bruce's departure from active involvement in the IOS. While this break did help, at many events there was not the dedicated Trio of TDs to get all the things done that you expect at an IOS. In many cases it was the work of the course TD that often got overlooked. But when it comes down to it, if you don't spend the time on course prep work then you are failing the player in the most direct way. The players are there to play and compete, right?
So, in order to facilitate a full IOS schedule, we are looking for someone to fill the role of Course Director at 2 or 3 sites for 2011. I won't say what sites we are looking for because the sites that a course TD is available for will dictate where we will schedule for. Also, if someone only wants to take on the direct course work (setup temps, mark tees, OB, etc) we would consider taking on a Course Coordinator in lieu of a Course TD. This could be a position that someone can grow into as they learn the details of the job. Working well with an informal group is essential!
Course TD (for work before, during and after the tournament. This can be a person that plays one day and works the other as long as they have all the help that they need lined up before the tournament). This person should live close to the course or have the time to spend at the course in the weeks and days leading up to the event.
---------------Park District contact (reservations, facility needs, etc.),
---------------Plan course Layout/OB, etc.
---------------Course Setup/Takedown
---------------Course Info Sheet
---------------Event Emcee?
Please let me know if you are interested in helping out the IOS either by PM or e-mail to jon.brakel AT gmail.com
Please note that although this is a volunteer position, you will usually be compensated for your expenses.
I would love to step up and help Jon, but don't know what good I would be living in the Peoria area. If you guys ever need help with anything the day I play an event, I am usually sitting in the parking lot at least an hour and a half before registration ends, so I would be available to help with temp baskets, marking tees, etc. or whatever you guys need help with. I'm getting too old to go play the course before I play 2 rounds of golf for the tourny.
Just let me know if any help is needed. I pre reg for every event. So if you see me signed up for an event, feel free to contact me here or a IM. I will lend a hand whenever possible. I have no problems helping out such a dedicated club. I will be paying my dues in a week or 2.
Why don't you be a "Course TD" for a Peoria area tournament, Doug?
Sounds like a pretty easy gig.
actually I got the test from Brett, and have been studying for it.
I am trying to plan the August Classic, but will need some help. But yea, it should be pretty easy. Don't know that I can match your 2009 GPO, but I could gaurantee there wouldn't be no mishaps like last year ;)
Jon, you may want to empty out your message box.
