Title: Kentucky State Championships
Post by: Bruce Brakel on April 23, 2011, 08:18:32 PM
We played the Kentucky State Championships today at Idlewild.  It rained off and on in the morning but was in the 60s and not too windy.  On the lunch hour the course was hit by severe weather, including torrential rain and a tornado warning.  It rained so hard several fairways became unplayably flooded.  The TD had to cancel the second round.

After the awards Kelsey wanted to go back to film some of the flooding.  I wanted to play around being one of those stupid TV announcers standing in front of a location where nothing was happening but something happened earlier.  It was unscripted.  We were just goofing around.

Pretty crazy stuff. When I played there last summer the creek was completely dry.

Two of my last two tournaments have had to cancel the second round due to really bad weather.  I hope I'm not cursed.

It's a new specialty...the one round tournament!

Wow, didn't think that creek could get that high. Must've been a crazy storm. Hope it dries up by the time I get there in June.

If it rains steady, the creek fills up and the course is a lot harder.  If it rains buckets, that creek gets crazy.  It rained buckets on the lunch hour after raining steadily for a week.  It should be fine by June.

For those who don't know, Idlewild is par 72, 18 holes, where a 72 is 1000 rated.  Moreover, there is not a hole out there that a 900 level player cannot get a par on if he'll think it through and execute each shot.  The problem is, once you've thought it through and realize that the only sensible thing to do is throw 125 feet and lay up your second throw on a par 5, can you really do that?  Or are you going to grab a driver and do something stupid?  If you play Idlewild for the first time, pay attention to tee sign par.  Those aren't rec pars like you see on some courses but pro par.  Also, Idlewild is best if you observe all the tournament o.b. and drop zones.

Bruce and Kelsey

Those were tremendous.  The only thing that would have made them better would have been if Bruce was in waders or a boat and Kelsey was putting at one of the baskets.  I think we should expect some coverage of any of the IOS events you get to this year.
