Title: Fairfield DGC Work Day 05-17-03
Post by: CEValkyrie on May 12, 2003, 08:02:55 AM
I didn't post this last week. I was making sure my game was not rained out & rescheduled for this Saturday. I'll be out there this Saturday @ 8:00AM. We'll finish tees #13 thru #18 & do some more wood chips & laying of dead wood down #15, 16, & 17 fairways. Please come out!

I cannot, and this goes both for Fairfield and Bevier - I'm still up in the Dells tonight.

I might be there.  Depends on the WPD's schedule for Bevier. Brett, since volunteers are hard to nail down, I suggest calling people individually.

Also had an idea for membership requirement: members MUST sign up for at least XXX hours of course or tourney volunteer work or else ?????.  Maybe just make it mandatory for officers. I dunno. Just a rambling thought.

So Jon & I will be there. SWEET! Anyone else?

I have everything set up. Scott will be out there Saturday morning with the BobCat :)

We'll work from 8 & be done by 12. Please come out. I'm begging.

Jim,

I think the concept is a good idea but I don't think that would work for our club. I think every person joins the club for one reason or another. When I joined I never thought i'd get this involved. I don't want to push people away or force them to do anything they don't want to.

We are trying to get Fairfield in tournament ready shape by August. If people don't like the playing conditions, they can only blame themselves.

I have tag #1. Anyone want to play for it after the work day?

Jon & I worked our butt's off today. Scott was there with the Bobcat & he was awesome!

We finished tees #13 thru #18 (All 18 tees are now complete). We moved #17 back about 10ft. We lined #15, 16, & 17 with dead wood. Scott also removed a bunch of stumps on those fairways. We started laying wood chips on #17 but Scott was ready to go & so were Jon & I. We worked from 8:00AM to 1:00PM.

Scott told us that a basket arrived at the park district on Friday. I'm going to call Keith & see when the are going to put it in.

I am going to call Keith on Monday & see if he can get someone to come out next Saturday with the Bobcat. I'm hoping to finish #8, 15, 16, & 17 with wood chips. Anyone interested, i'll let you know later this week.

BTW-] Jon kicked my butt & now has #1 bag tag.

Making a mandatory number of hours for club members to work does sound like a good idea, but it has draw backs.  For example, we usually do work days on Saturdays.  I work every other Saturday (usually the 1st, 3rd, and 5th), either 8-2 or 11-5 and hence can not help with work days on the days that I work.

I think John had a great idea about how to get people to help out, but I'd like to expand on it a bit if I could.  A good way to get people to show up to something like this is to make it into something other than what it is.  Schedule a "tournement" of some kind where you pay $1 to enter and you can only play if you're going to help with the clean up.  Add some discs donated by the club or members of the club.  I have a ton of discs laying around my house that are only slightly used that I never throw.  I'd be willing to hand 'em all over to the club for something like this.

Once people get signed up, then give them something to do.  Haul woodchips/limestone around or line the wooded holes with dead wood.  After you've accomplished everything you need to do, then play the tourney.

Also, posting a sign at the course to let people know we're going to be out there  playing this VIP tourney (the one I just described that is) and doing clean up.  That way you can attract some attention to what you're doing.

This is all just an idea that I gleaned from John's idea about the bag tags.  God I love teamwork.

I'll be there with tools in hand. I had a dream last night that I showed up and forgot my tools and pants. I'll try to not let that happen!

I want your #1 tag, but I say you only give people who help a chance at it on Saturday. So, then no one who shows up at noon gets a shot at #1.
