Here's a quick update on the Safari League portable baskets. I finished the prototype last weekend. 10 outside chains and 4 inner chains. I modified it last night with 16 outer chains and zero inner, and decided that I could get 18 outer chains on the actual production models if I don't waste any cutting.
The original prototype with 10 outer chains rejected any putt less than perfect, and spit out shots that had a lot of speed on them. The 16 chain version is much better, and I think the 18 chain version will be better still.
Matt and I spent Tuesday night cutting and drilling out 8 more baskets (he gets one for helping me), and we will have a couple done by Saturday for the club to try out.
The cost of supplies is about $35 a basket. Maybe a little more if you have to buy paint and sandpaper, and other things like that. I tried a couple of times to put a picture on the web, but failed. Sorry. You'll just have to come out for Skins or Best Shot to give it your blessing or condemn it to oblivion.
If we're going to put in a practice basket it would have to be permanent, without a doubt.
I personally would prefer another basket like what is already on the course. Wasn't WPD going to replace a basket or two this year & didn't we talk about using one of the replaced ones as the warmup pin?
They're decent baskets. The winner from this year's 4 event safari series got one for taking 1st.
It might be a good idea to hang a sign on the tennis court fence, near the proposed basket, stating something like, "Please do not allow children to play on or around disc golf basket."
Of course I would prefer a standard DGA or Innova basket, even though I LOVE the ones a bunch of you have made. But we don't have $350 saved up yet, and as long as we're adding the tee markers and trash cans, let's do this at the same time. It is not a necessity, but it would really upgrade the course. And I would be proud to install any of the baskets Bill, Matt, Brett, Adrian, Jojo, and Myk have made! I believe Adrian's would be my choice because of it's durability and the fact that he made a sleeve and anchor for permanent placement. What do you say?
Yes, but now they seem to be pulling back when spending any real money is concerned. I will have a sit-down with Mike Trigg on Monday and discuss it more.
Gateway has been very flippity-floppity. First they email me 5 times a week. Then nothing for 3 months. Then a deluge of emails asking us to buy Gateway discs and an offer to send some for free. Then silence for the past 2 months.
I say forget Gateway as a sponsor. We rarely use their discs and I cannot stand inconsistent communication. If you want gateway discs, buy them through Disc Golf World or other retailers like discndat, gottagogottathrow, or Gateway.
Shawn -
Is the Pro weekend bring your own partner?
Do y'all want me to order these? I will be ordering one as well for my older son.
Josh - that's fine - and THANK YOU!
Please make SunKing aware that most of these baskets are going to DISContinuum members. He (Mike) and I have been trying to revive our sponsorship relationship, and this would certainly be a good thing. Please send me a private mesage & tell me where to send $$$ (and what total is for each basket).
Coooooool, baby! That's some right hot smack, disc-daddy-o!
Hey, I just heard about Shaboo falling off a roof (Pat's mom's???). Is he OK?? Pat said something about heavy-duty knee surgery. Can you get me a phone number so I can call him?
No, not yet. Josh said it would be within 2 weeks (maybe sooner).
Thanks for staying on top of things, Josh!
I hope it gets here soon so I can use it instead of the small artificial xmas tree we have in our upstairs bedroom. You know, a SkillShot with lights and garland and a glow mini on top. That's style!
Ho-Ho-Hyzer!
What strike?
I try not to read the news much.
lazy sun-drenched bums
Thanks for going through the nuttiness of getting us our baskets!
I think we should have Bill, Adrian, Myk, Jojo, me, & anyone else who has made or is making a basket, bring them to the 2002 World's Biggest on June 1st. We could even have a vote to see which is preferred by all who show. Jim- are we going to have any of those Gateway Discs to demo? The putters look cool. Can't remember what site I saw it on but they were going for $9.00 bones.
I think the skillshots catch great. We shot at one all day on Monday & I like them. For practice they are awesome. Very portable if you don't have room to store things. One thing I don't like is that they are smaller than a regular basket that you would see at the course. Great for practice but if you're going to use it at tournaments I wouldn't suggest it. Guess it depends on what you prefer.
I noticed Jim has an opinion poll on the website about people's home-made baskets to be used as a permanent basket at Bevier. There might be some liability issues if someone (stupidly) got hurt climbing on the thing or cut themselves on it. Since it was made by a club member, the club might be held responsible. If it is a PDGA approved basket, then the PDGA might be able to take some of the blame. The PDGA also might have better lawyers.
If we do put in another permanent basket, perhaps it should be either a PDGA approved one, or a homemade one that looks like a PDGA approved one. An exception to this might be a tone pole. But definitely don't put any of my baskets as permanents. They will get stolen or destroyed, or someone will end up hanging themselves from the weed-wacker line.
I tried to blast putts through one and it caught everyone. I would be in for one If we could find the people. If you get a total cost w/shipping let me know and then I'll try a few local guys to see if they can beat it. I'm pretty sure we could get a better deal since we will not have to pay shipping. I always try to shop locally since these guys are our sponsers.
I'd rather go threw Tony J. I'm sure he will match any price and beat it by a few bucks. This is all Tony does now and he is one of our best sponsers. Tony will be at The Steady Ed Memorial with the bright yellow van. I'll ask him this coming weekend at the halloween fright tournament at Dreska. It is AM weekend and the next weekend is Pro. Starts at 3, prereg is at 1:30-2:30 where you can putt for up to 3 mulligans that can be used for first round of alternate, 2nd round is glow best shot. Best part is that you get to pick your partner before the start and don't forget to pick a team name.
Josh You mean $92 right? How many should I tell him to save if he has any? I will be 1...Do we have a 2?
When are you going to order? I want 1 and I will have the cash next Wed., payday
Drove threw Pets today on my way to parkside and not 1 person in the park. I'm thinking we should all go out there with our new portable baskets and make a course as we go. As long as the snow melts it whould be fun throwing off the tobaggan hill and across some of the large ravines.
Put me in for one as well. I get paid on Wednesday, too.
you guys got your baskets already? When did they come in. I never got a call.
I had a note from UPS left on my door step this afternoon letting me know that a package would be delivered to me tomorrow morning. As I've not ordered anything in a long long time, I can only assume it's my basket. I hope, I hope, I hope.
okay, now I'm worried.
5:15 is perfect for me. I'll meet you there.
Has anyone ever used the Skil-Shot from Ching? What do you think? I saw them for sale for $99.95 but if you buy 7 they throw in 2 free. I was thinking if we can get a total of 9 people to buy them we could lower our costs, but for all I know they could be junk.
Yeah I just want something to practice my putting. Heaven knows I need the practice!
That would be great! I'd be game. SO that's two of us who want one.
OK So I got ahold of Mike from Sun King and he can get them for us for $75 each plus shipping cost. They'd be shipped directly from Innova so he wants us to let him know if we are interested so he can get us a total. So that gives us another avenue to look at.
Shawn, how much did you say you could get them for?
That sounds good. Besides Sun King just emailed to let me know that Innova is sold out right now so he's not sure when he will be able to get them in. Kyle and I are partnering up to play saturday. Should be fun. We played there this past saturday. I really hope that's not a sign of things to come!
SO Sun King talked to Innova and he will be able to get the Skil Shots in the next couple of weeks if we do decide to go through him. If Chain Reaction can't beat his price of $75 or for one reason or another can't get as many as we would like, we should probably keep Sun King in mind. I've had nothing but great dealings with him. I forgot until this morning that he is a sponsor of Discontinuum.
Shawn, yeah I am definitely in for one and Sun King can get them for $75 plus shipping and they would be sent directly from Innova. And that is his price to us if we order 2 or if we order 9 it doesn't matter, it's the same price. So when we finally decide how many we want, I can let Sun King know and he can get us a shipping cost too so we can figure out the total.
Shawn, did you ever find out if you want one of the Skill shots?
Last call for anyone else as well. Once I get a final answer from Shawn I'm going to order them so speak up if ya want one. They will be $75 each plus shipping. :-)
Shawn-I can wait til next week to order them and then I can just get the money from ya at glow next week.
Jim-That's alright I'm ordering them though Sun King because he's giving us a nice deal-$75 plus shipping. If you want though I can add yours to our order.
Jim-I'm one step ahead of ya. I knew he was one of the sponsors so I mentioned it to him. I buy most of my stuff through him he's great to work with. I highly recommend him. I'll email him today and get a total from him, then I'll send you a private message with all the info.
Myk-I'll do the same for you too.
Sounds like a plan to me!
Hopefully sooner :-)
Hey Myk, Shawn, Kyle and Jim. I emailed Sun King and told him I was getting a little bit nervous about the baskets with Christmas coming up and a couple of these are supposed to be presents for people. Here's what he said:
"You should be fine as far as Christmas goes. I talked to Innova on Monday and they said that they were on there way from California and could be in stock by the end of the week. I realize that is tomorrow, but I figure they should be in very shortly - no need to worry. "
Just wanted to keep you posted
That's really funny!
OK I just talked to Innova today and they said that they are shipping the Skil-Shots as soon as they come in and they are coming in at 3:30 today to South Carolina so I'm expecting them in the next few days ('Course I've been saying that for over a month now!!!)
Sorry it's been taking so long, stupid strike held everything up, not to mention the high demand on Skil-Shots
Yeah I'm with you,I try to stay away from the news, too depressing. Never any good news, ya know? But apparently there was/is a strike out west that is slowing all sorts of shipping and of course our stuff is stuck in the middle of it!
More updates, just got this today-12-18-02:
Josh,
Without further ado, the 5 baskets are shipping today. In time for Christmas? It'll be tight, more than likely the day after.
I'm passing along an apology from Innova, as they didn't expect them to arrive so late.
Happy Holidays!
Mike
Sorry Myk, I hate to burst yer bubble but they are all being delivered to me directly to save on shipping.
Well, hopefully, whatever it is, isn't ticking! :-)
Hey all! As you have heard, they are finally here.
Myk are we still on for 5:15 @ Pizza Hut?
Shawn and Jim, just let me know when you want to meet up so I can get you baskets.
Shawn, your Rocs are here too.
Ok, total cost including shipping from discshoppe is $92.74 each.
The buy 7 get 2 free deal (which I used to figure that price) ends this weekend. However, I talked to the guy on the site and he said he'll still give us the deal if we order from him. So if we can get enough people for this and Shawn can't find anything cheaper, it's not a bad deal.
I'm also getting 1, and Josh is in for 1, so we have 3 for sure.
We also have 3 or 4 friends who are interested, but we need to find out for sure if they're going to buy any or not.
