Title: Memorial 2012
Post by: Dan Michler on February 29, 2012, 05:43:42 PM
Nice 1st round from Dana.  1015 rated.

Feldberg and McBeth BOTH with 1100+ rated rounds!  Unreal.  I've played that course and I don't know how they do it.  To put it in perspective, Dana shot a 1015 rated 56 and is 12 shots off the lead.

Looks like Feldberg's 1115 will be the 3rd highest rated round of all-time.  Climo and Skinner both had 1117's.

Good luck in Round 2, Dana.

Watching is free.  You don't have to be a member.  I think anyone that pays $25 one time is a Lifetime member.

Monster 1050 rated round from Dana today.  Congrats to him.  Good luck in Rd 4.

Avery with a 1095 rated round.  That makes 4 1090+ rounds during the first 3 rounds of this event!  Looks like McBeth is firmly in the driver's seat heading into the final round.  Nobody rated under 1020 is in the top 14.  Really makes you want to go play Open  ::)

Kenny seems to be holding his own this week as well. Every time I check he is moving up on the leader board.

Imagine how good the pros would be if there were money to be made playing this game!

This tourney makes me think the pro's need more OB or different tees.  I know how hard it was but, to the non-DG public, -44 for four rounds just doesn't sound right.  Most people understand BG scores, in comparison we sound silly.

I don't understand how the ratings were so ridiculous for this event. particularly for those top 3 players  Four 1100+ rounds in 1 event?  There had been like 10 of them in the history of ratings before this?  Seems odd.  For godsake, Feldberg shot 1115 1054 1019 1112 and he was only 3rd place, losing by 5 shots despite shooting his 2 highest rated rounds EVER in the same event!

Congrats to Dana on a 21st place and a hard earned $340.  Way to represent IL at one of the biggest events in the world.

Both courses are fairly wide open and the OB isn't ridiculous. Both of the days that posted the 1100+ rounds had fairly light winds. I think if you get a course that is mostly open like this, take away the wind, and put solid players that have no problems making putts and staying in bounds, you're going to see some high ratings. At the same time people that can't control their drives well or are not great at putting are going to see lots of easy strokes slip away and their ratings plummet.

Imagine putting these guys on a course like Bartlett and add some generous roped off OB. They're going to birdie almost every hole and get the same 1100 round simply because they're just that consistent and on their game.

I agree somewhat with your logic, however they do play these courses every year. And this isn't the first time the winds have been light.  They also play other similar courses over the 10+ years ratings have been kept.  Yet I'm willing to bet you can't find a higher 3 or 4 round average than Feldberg's at any event in history.  So, the best 3 individual tournament performances in history happened at the same event?  It seems to defy logic.  I would suggest a few contributing factors...

#1  These 3 guys were absolutely on fire this week and the competition between the 3 of them pushed their games to new levels.
#2  The elite few players in the world who have made this game their fulltime profession are really separating themselves from the rest.  I would include Feldberg, Nikko, Ulibarri, McBeth, Doss, and Schusterick in this group.
#3  I agree with your logic that these courses have the ability to eat up lesser players, but do not provide the same challenge to the elite players.  The fact that the women and masters groups appear to be included in the same ratings calculation feeds into this.  They simply can't throw the same shots.

We all know the ratings are boosted for NT events. to shoot a 1100 rated round around here you need aces.

In my experience, the only NT that ever seems to have 'boosted' ratings is The Memorial.  And after this year, I don't really believe they are boosted.  Those guys at the top are playing near perfect golf.  It is absolutely unreal.  McBeth, Will and Feldberg just straight murdered everybody. (I need to practice more)

Kenny G and I had a great time out there.  If you have the money, I'd suggest going to this event.  It is fun to play in shorts!  The player packs (pro and am alike) are always great.  As a pro, I got an awesome backpack a UV Rattler (Michler just got a boner), Memorial Sunglasses, a metal mini and some other little things.  Ams got all of that plus they got 2 Ti discs and maybe a dry fit.

Thanks to everyone that was cheering or following along.

How many discs did each of you throw in the water throughout the weekend and of those how many did you get back?

When I attended in 2007, I lost 12 soldiers between practice and tournament rounds.  I recall Neal Swanson coming home 14 discs lighter that year.

That's a lot of lost plastic. Dana almost talked me into trying to go, but you talked me right out of it ;)

I lost a bunch of Destroyers. 6-7.  Didn't get any back, but I usually throw em in the middle!

Kenny lost a few and he actually got 1 back.

When I went in '05, I lost 3.  Spinners on the Green has these huge metal rakes (at least 3' across) on long ropes.  I think they got all but one back.  I even lost one from a roller in a really weird place and they found that too.  They don't necessarily get them in the short that you're there.  But give it two weeks or so and call them.  If your disc is clearly marked, they probably have it.  But yeah, I'd highly reccomend bringing a LOT of extra plastic if you're going!
