Title: Aces and Chains presents: The Iron Leaf at The Oaks in Mokena
Post by: acesandchains on March 14, 2012, 06:24:26 AM
C-tier tournament. April 21st & April 22nd. 2 rounds of 27 holes each.

I'm very happy to annouce that there's a tournament in Mokena this year! This will be the first PDGA sanctioned tournament at Mokena since Illinois State in 2007. My thanks to Bruce for getting his foot in the door last year with the Big-D Doubles, and to Mary Beth @ Mokena for being a class act.

The Oaks is a fabulous course, with mature oak trees, and grass fairways. Three tight technical holes thru the woods add a little variety. With a total of 27 holes in all, it provides both challenge, and beauty. This course was featured in Flying Disc Magazine.

There is a $2 per person course fee for this tournament that goes directly to the Mokena Park District. It is already added in to the tournament fee.

Pre-registration is highly encouraged. By pre-registering, you help us run a smoother tournament. Pre-register at: http://www.acesandchains.com/node/793

Day of Registration (if spots are available) and Check-In will be between 8am-9am both days. Please check in when you get there.

Players meeting will be held at 9:15am. Tee off at approx. 9:40am. Tournament headquarters will be at the pavilion by the baseball fields. Instead of going in the main park entrance, use Mokena St. and proceed to the parking lot at the end.

Tentative division schedule:

Saturday:

Recreational
Novice
All Am Masters divisions
All Women's divisions
All Jr.s

Sunday:

Pro Open
All Open Masters
Advanced
Intermediate

Tournament fee is $32 for AMs, $52 for Pros. $10 more if you are not a current PDGA member.

I had the same question - website shows Saturday 4/21 for the lower divisions and Sunday 4/22 for the upper divisions.

Saturday will be the short tees, and Sunday will be the long tees. I didn't want to have a mix of different divisions on different tee boxes all on the same day. That tends to cause problems.

Unless something changes, this will be the only tournament I run that has both Advanced and MPO on the same day.

Not seeing this on the PDGA site, but do want to plan around it. Is everything still a go?

Tom,

If your question is about The Iron Leaf at the Oaks, yes everything is still on. Just paid the sactioning fee this morning, so it should be up on the PDGA site sometime this week.

Just asking... I think there are 3 sets of tees at Mokena. Most of them double or triple up, but the separate short tees (Red, I think) are really short. Are you maybe thinking of White ("short") and Blue ("long")?

Sorry guys.....been extremely busy. Didn't realize I had a  bunch of questions to answer.

Mokena is closing the course for tournament play. I didn't have to ask, they brought it up.

Awards ceremony will be held at tournament central, but payouts will be at the store in the form of Gift Cards. You do not have to pick up your payout that day if you don't want to. Just drop in whenever it's convenient for you. As usual, there is no difference between the cash price, and the "funny money" price on my merchandise.

I am currently working on a method to put store credit on www.acesandchains.com for each player that elects to shop online instead of coming in to the store. If this works out, it will make it easier for out of town players, or anyone who would rather shop from home. Unfortunately, this will not be ready to implement by next weekend.

I will not be bringing merchandise to the tournament. We have a great selection at the store, and we'll be open till at least 7pm both days.

Adv Masters, Adv Grandmasters, etc, all play on Saturday. I don't know what divisions will have players signed up in them. But, we try to accomodate as best as we can to make tournament play fun for those divisions as well.

Yes, when I say short tees for Saturday, I mean the ones with the signs next to them. I believe those are the white tees. And by Long, I mean the longest (blue) tees.

So, we can shop online with the gift cards or not?  I'm confused.  Where is the store in relation to the course?

Dan,

The course is closed for non T players.  (please dont ask me why i have the need to ask )

If you cash, you get funny money.
That funny money can be used at the store
in Joliet.  The address is 1706 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL.

He is not bringing the store to the course. This could be an issue for the IN guy who cashes, though.

The online idea is great, my suggestion is that for online redemption, you have to have
signed up/visiteed the store at least once.

I tend not to cash so its not a problem either way. with IOS funny money , i let it accumulate and bought stuff and end of year

Highland was run very smoothly and I expect this to as well.
going be a big turnout i think
thanks for running the T

ill sign up later , got to figure out what division to play in

Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate that.

We try to run a smooth tournament. For my part, I wasn't that happy with how the award ceremony ran Saturday at FF, but we fixed those issues for Sunday, and it worked great. By changing the method, we were able to get to the award ceremony quickly, and get everyone out of there in a timely manner. We'll be using that same method at Mokena.

The award ceremony will be held at tournament central. Afterwards, players who cash can go back to the store and pick up their gift cards that night, or anytime thereafter. You do not need to pick them up the same night if you don't want to. Gift cards have no expiration date, so you can save them or spend them as you like.

After the awards ceremony, I call in all the cashing players names and amounts to the store so the cards will be ready when you get there.

Just to be clear, I won't be doing Blue tees both rounds on Sunday. It is 27 holes after alll. So, we'll do one round of whites and one round of blues.

What happens when a player from Michigan or Indiana cashes? They have to drive 25 minutes west to come the 25 minutes back east? ouch

So will there be free shipping for the discs that are won and sent later through online or phone ordering per Matt's question above? Not that I have had a strong record of cashing at tournaments this year, but I have a less strong track record of being near the store.

I have the similar worries.  I was planning on attending Sunday, but from what I'm understanding, if I cash I will be required to drive to Joliet after the tournament, or schedule another time to drive to Joliet just to pick up my gift card.  I'm not sure I'm interested in doing that.  I realize you may not be able to bring discs to the course, but if I could at least pick up a gift card at the course that could be used for online ordering (regardless of shipping) I'd be okay.  Otherwise, maybe run this as a trophy-only event?

Just for the record, I already offer free shipping for discs ordered from the website. Same prices as in the store.

If someone drives in from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, or anywhere far enough away to have a legitimate beef with having to travel to the store, they just have to see me after the tournament to make arrangements. I'm sure we can offer a workable solution for them. And, as already stated, I'm working on a very nice solution to the issue for future tournaments. I hesitated to mention this on a forum because I know I'll get someone from within 25 miles who will claim it's too hard for them to get to the store.

I also plan to mail out the gift cards that haven't been claimed from First Flight if I have the players address. I'll do the same for Iron Leaf.

This isn't meant to inconvenience anyone. But, of course, I can't bring the whole store with me. We have a great selection, and part of the reason I run tournaments is to build the reputation of the store, and bring people in.

If you play, and cash, and you live outside the area, feel free to talk to me AFTER the tournament to make arrangements. I am more than willing to make special allowances for an out of town player. Please don't ask me for special arrangements if you live close enough to the store to visit. But again, if you have a legitimate reason, I'll be happy to work something out with you.

Sounds great.  Mailing them out sounds like an easy solution.  I hope to be there Sunday if the weather holds out.

Thanks for running an event at Mokena, it was great to play a competitive round there again! The wind made it pretty interesting.

Do you think there is anything the park district could do in the future to keep people off the course? I did see a few signs, but not everyone goes to the board to read the latest news. There were quite a few groups that got backed up halfway through the second round due to people hopping on the course and it puts the players in a sometimes uncomfortable situation asking people to leave that, for good reason, don't want to.
