Please give some feedback for the Safari. Replies welcome.

I think I'd be able to make more safaris in 2004 if there wasn't as much travel involved

I won't be playing the Safari Series in 2004.  It will be Jon's turn to do all that driving.

I don't think you want to design a Safari by committee.  I do think that the people who want to step up and run it should make an extensive proposal and the club should discuss whatever proposals are presented.  Perhaps at the October meeting.  Then, based on the discussion, that person, or those people, could tweak their proposal and we could vote in November.

An extensive proposal would include:

Times, dates and locations for each event
Divisions offered
Entry fees
Payout structure
Overall Scoring formula
and maybe a short statement about what you hope to accomplish

The current format has proven to be a useful fund raiser for Discontinuum, and a fun format that is attractive mainly to club members.  The lack of a payout at each event makes the series unattractive to non-members.  If a similar fund raising format is used in 2004, it ought to be advertised as the series that pays for the website.  

I guess I like the idea of the Safari, but it's hard, at least for me, to be able to make a commitment like that over an entire year.  Heck I don't even know if I'll be living in Wisconsin in a year.  Another thing is the $.  If I attend all 12 events, that $84 and a nice start on just buying my own skil shot without the time of traveling and committing all day to the Safari.  just my .o2

I figured the reason it's called a 'safari' is *because* you're traveling everywhere to play, though.

Anyhow, I've pretty much stated my opinions on this before, but...

Likes:

I likes the traveling to different courses. I get tired of playing the same courses and this is a good excuse to get out and try different ones; making a day of it usually. It's been a good variety of courses.

I likes the overall point system and yearend prizes, although there are some things I don't likes about it. (see below)

Don't Likes:

I don't likes the entry fee vs. the payout. There's no incentive to come out and play and pay $7-10 if the most you're going to get out of it is a disc. This is particularly true for 'locals', if the idea is to generate interest in the club area-wide, or if you're not in the competition for overall points. This consequently led to lower attendance, I think.

Suggestions:

Keep the point system, but clarify a tiebreaking system – I'd like to see it weighted a bit more toward overall consistency rather than an end-of-year playoff.

Cash payouts for each individual tournament. For both upper and lower pools. Or drop the entry fee – a lot.

Having said all this, I wouldn't recommend continuing the Safari in its current format. I'm pretty much in agreement w/ what Bruce says, but I'm not in a position to offer to run it next year.

Okay, clarification on this...

I agree that the object of the safari is traveling to different courses, but there are closer courses that could be played.
Really, if we want a lot of club member participation for 2004 then a safari course shouldn't be much more than an hour's drive from the Waukegan area.

I liked playing the different courses. It is a lot of fun to play different places.
