2013 DISContinuum Club Challenge
WHEN: March 16, 2013.
WHERE: The Oaks
10847 LaPorte Road
Mokena IL, 60448
WHAT'S AT STAKE: Bragging rights and a SWEET trophy.
COST: $2.00 per person for course fee
This annual event had has grown over the years. It is to support the local clubs and local courses. It is typically the first event of the year where everyone has a chance to catch up with all their disc golf friends. This is a non-sanctioned event. Will this be the year that J-Town can place their name on the trophy?
Past Winners:
2007: Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club
2008: DISContinuum Disc Golf Club
2009: Streamwood Disc Golfers Union
2010: Streamwood Disc Golfers Union
2011: Streamwood Disc Golfers Union
2012: Streamwood Disc Golfers Union
2012: Disc Golfers Union
Special thanks to J-Town for securing The Oaks.
This event is taking place March 16, 2013 at the Oaks in Mokena. Sign-up will be 8:45AM to 9:45AM. Tee-off will be right around 10:00 AM. Due to the nature of this event where there is not preregistration we will be asking team captains to have some rosters together before the event begins.
The event last year at Silver Lake in Wisconsin maxed out at 135 players. There were 5 players on all 27 holes. We are hoping for the same at Mokena. With 5 clubs if the player base exceeds 135 players teams will be limited t a roster of 27 players. Scoring will be the same as in past years.
All clubs are welcome to bring their bagtags to sell and promote memberships. We are also asking clubs to bring one or two CTPs. We are asking that the clubs run their own CTPs.
As this is a team event and not a sanctioned event, trashing talking and bragging are highly encouraged. This is the seventh annual event and it has grown over the years, as has the number of disc golfers in Northern Illinois.
Well, the date is good for me and I always enjoy playing this event. Last year's Challenge with the great weather was a very fun day of disc golf. Count me in. However this is like playing the exhibition matches at a high school tennis meet. My round will not impact the team score. Tom needs to hear from some players with a higher rating than 828. The Fox Valley Board is already alive with players signing up. Who is in?
edit- 1-31-13 #26088
I'm in. Thanks for getting this set up.
Count me in. Gonna have to get my game up by 3/16!
I'm in. #37504
Do you have to get a PDGA # to play this?
Players who do not have a PDGA # and a rating will be placed in the upper division unless I have a reason to place you in the lower division. If you have played previously in a PDGA event we usually have a rating for you that we use for placing you in the correct division.
But the short answer is "No, a PDGA # is not required".
For the sake of clarity. Its "Disc Golfer's Union" we dropped the Streamwood over 2 years ago in order to be more inclusive. Please take note. We are not confined by any one town or state. All are welcome in the Union! USA! USA! USA!
Says the man who's Avatar says Streamwood Disc Golfer's Union ::)
Yes, I realize that. Ill update my avatar if that Will make you happy ;D
Just having some fun....
Count me in.
I"m in
Doug B

Planning to play.
Ron Huebner
#28525
I am planning on playing in this again, it was a blast last year.
Can we renew our Discontinuum membership and purchase a new tag the day of? I have not gotten around to doing that yet.
PDGA # 44640, Upper
I think my PDGA rating may need to be renewed as well. I'll make sure to do that as well.
I am also in for this event!!!!!
I would like to play.
Someone on the J-Town boards pointed out that there is no time listed. Can we get a time?
Please check the top post for updated information.
Here is our roster to date:
Upper:
Brett Comincioli
Dan Michler
Roman Korol
Doug Buettgen
Case Jackson
Lower:
David Barish
Trevor Greene
Tim Steward
Ron Huebner
Airspuds
Tom McManus
Dave Ahlgrim
You can sign up for the club the day of the event. But please arrive early as this is usually a pretty hectic day. If you are planning on playing please post here and let us know. Last year we had 135 players. All players are welcome as long as they are club members.
If you are a DISContinuum member and want to play in this event or would like to be a member and want to play in this event please post here.
Thanks!
Which tees will we be playing? Same for both divisions?
We are currently planning for Blue tees.
I'm planning on heading down there on Wednesday to play the course assuming it's playable. Haven't been down there in a while.
Happy to give anyone interested a ride. Will be going down early and playing at least two rounds.
Anyone know how this course will hold up to all the snow melting over the next couple of days? Not looking to drive an hour and not be able to play.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=147&mode=hi
been a while since ive played blue
I'm hoping/planning on playing it Monday. I'll relay conditions if I do. From what I remember the place can get pretty sloppy (especially around the baskets) when muddy. We'll see.
I'd say totally unplayable. If the ground wasn't frozen I was sinking 2". It took me 3 1/2 hours toplay a round from the blues, by MYSELF!!! I threw 2nd drives on the first four or so then stopped that real quick. Saturday will be a day of attrition.
If the course is that bad is the Tourney still on???
If the event is still going to happen ill make the trip down there.

Yes. Rain or shine. There is a few days for the course to dry up.
Tom,
Is the event one round of 18 or two?
One round of 27.
Thanks!!!
I'm still going, but get ready. It will not dry out. Years of MTBing have taught me what to expect from Spring thaws. Spotty showers forecast during the week. The frozen areas and bits of snow and ice should melt a bit making those areas as bad as the rest. Freezing at night and thawing during the day won't help either. The ground is just going to get softer. #'s 4 and 5 were OK (just OK) and 19-21 were still frozen, everything else was soup. On a plus side, rain won't really matter for the day of and there is plenty of water to wash the mud off. I'll have a pic up as soon as my phone recharges.
Sounds good Tafe Look forward to seeing the pics
This is the only pic I bothered taking. It is the top of #13. You can see the trail of my footprints. They're about 1 1/2" deep. This was the better of the muddy areas. On alot of other holes, I was sinking deeper. Even in the grass areas I was sinking about 1/2". You can also see the ice on top of the stairs in the distance, somewhat dangerous. I really don't think it will get any better, probably worse. But... Saturday will be a day on course with a bunch of friends I don't normally see. Definitely better then being off-course!!!
Dad-Gummit!!! I hate posting pics! Can't get it right, and now my Flick'r has closed. If you can, check out my Flick'r account; http://www.flickr.com/photos/75616860@N06/ or look me up on facebook; Tafe Hemler. Send me a friend request and I'll approve so you can see my pics. I'll post it to my wall right now.
Facebook isn't letting me post either! At least the link to Flick'r seems to be working, at least for me.
I wish I could make the trip up as it is the first weekend of spring break down here in Champaign, but the U of I team is heading to St. Louis to try and qualify for Nationals again. DISContinuum team looks solid so far, go get 'em this year!
PS - Tom, I asked Case to grab me a DISContinuum membership for this year, he should be covering both of us. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Sayer. Good luck in St. Louis. We have a tag set aside for you.
I probably seemed somewhat harsh in my assessment of the course conditions. I just wanted to tell it how it is, so no one is surprised. If you didn't catch my second sentiment, this is it... Saturday is going to be messy. SO WHAT! I'm really looking forward to playing with some people I may not normally run into in a non-money centered, fun environment. Thanks to Mr. McManus for organizing this. As kids we used to love playing in the mud. Embrace your inner child and let's have some fun!
Just saw on J-Town's site that we are meeting over by the baseball fields so there is room for everyone to park. It is where we used to go before the park district building was built. Over by holes 19-21. The entrance is west of the PD building. If I remember correctly there is a sign saying "park entrance". I think there is a stop sign there too. Pass the word along please. See you all there.
Tafe,
I look forward to meeting you and hucking some plastic around in the mud!!
My buddy Dave and I are new to the club, and the sport. We are excited to get to know more players and start improving our game.
Tom,
Do you have an updated roster?
Looking forward to being there. Haven't missed playing at least once a week all winter, a lil mud isn't going to stop me! Should be a ton of fun, and definitely thanks to Tom and those that put this together!
We have a separate topic for our roster. Please let us know if you plan on playing.
Thanks.
Hay Tom, How are the numbers looking for the players a team can bring? We have our 27 and can prob bring atleast 3 more if not a couple more than that. Should we try to stay at 27? I know we've got extra guys who have played in multiple challenges who want to come down and play still, but I'd hate to tell em to drive down and they couldn't get in.
Glancing around I see :
Union - 30
J Town - 29
FVM - 29
GRABM - 24
Discontinuum - 12 (assume this number is low)
We're pushing that 135 limit.
Is anyone leaving from the Mundelein area? Carpool? I am picking Dave up on my way to the Tournament.
I will be there taking registrations for the Vibram ILL Series in the morning! Will also have some discs for sale, hit me up if theres something you're looking for.
A couple final items to update everyone on the event this Saturday: We will be meeting at the baseball field side of the park. You must be a current member of a club to play. Each club is responsible for their own CTPs. We are hoping for a minimum of two per club. We will need one representative from each club at the scorer's table to help out with entries. We will not be collecting an ace pool; we are having an honor system ace, if someone hits an ace please pay them $1.00. Each club is responsible for running their own tags. Ray Hill will be explaining course rules. Thanks to J-Town for hosting this event. Thanks to all who plan to attend.
This should be a walk in the park compared to the big freeze with all the rain. The pics do look really bad, like quick sand. Picking up mud boots tonight.
Love from Fox Valley. Tom you warmed our hearts and slammed dunked it again! Never have I witnessed a program grow so fast and strong. Tom you have created a Monster. Thanks to everyone who came out and loved seeing all my disc golf friends. Tom has also started a Club support network. Almost ran out of tags today. Appreciate the Disc Golf Community and there continued support for the game! Happy Tom Day, Schepp's
Great turnout today. Thanks goodness for the bad weather. We would have had 200 people with good weather. I am sure Mike will have results posted in the next day or two. Congrats to J-Town. Huge turnouts by four of the clubs.
Thanks for putting everything together Discontinuum and congrats to Jtown. I wasn't sure where to post this so...

Thank you Tom for getting this whole thing together. It was fun just seeing a bunch of people that I haven't seen in years. Congrats to J-town. And a belated happy birthday to you sir! Next year we might have to do Rockford or Lemon Lake just to handle the turnout!

Thank you Mike. Great job on getting these scores posted so quickly. Brilliant idea of putting clubs and bag tags on cards. Getting bag tags distributed for five clubs distributed in record time. Mike is the man.
I have three Discontinuum tags left behind from Saturday. I believe they belong to Glenn Gruenke, Dave Ahlgrimi and Dean Bingham. Come to one of the Illinois Open Series events and I'll make sure you get your tag.
Tom, Did we ever get the tags straightened out? I brought number 55, and I was supposed to take 59 I believe. That tag was not there because of some confusion. Let me know what I should do.
This was my first tournament, and I really enjoyed myself. Thank you all for running the event. And.......I didn't even place last LOL
Pickax- I know Dave left with a tag from the event.
thank you Tom thank you Mike.. one of my favorite events every year.. IL disc golf is lucky to have guys like you..
THANKS!!
(Mike-- I did not get my bag tag for Discontinuum back, was handing out jtown's and never went to the other table... I'll see you somewhere soon.)

As always this was a great event. Seeing over 100 players on a crappy day on a muddy course says a lot about the commitment of disc golfers in our local clubs. I loved the idea of randomly mixing the players. I was very fortunate to play with a touring pro, Dana Vicich and two real good local pros, Sean Butler and Chuck Jepsen. I also got to play with the bald eagle of Fox Valley which is always a good time. I cannot tell you how great it is to play a round with a players of this caliber. They were gracious and friendly but taught a lot simply by playing their games. I learned a lot by watching them play. I wish Dana had stayed. He had to leave for a wedding. I was playing much better while he was there. The bald eagle had the opposite effect. He started slow but started to heat up when we became a foursome. Thanks again to Tom and Mike for running this and for anybody with J Town who helped us get the course lined up.
I had to run out as I had out of town guests at the house.I left both a Discontinuum tag and a Fox Valley tag. Sorry about that.

Based on the last couple of posts it looks like I have tags for Glenn Gruenke, Ray Hill, and Trevor Greene. My apologies for the mixups.
