We play a version of that game while traveling in the car but not by any rules you could guess!

In our rules you lose if you make a guess at the answer and it is wrong.  You also lose if everyone else is making correct guesses that demonstrate that they know the answer but you are still clueless, like:  Are some of them galvanized?  Do the lighter ones have more legs?  Do they come in double chain and single chain configurations?  The only way to win is to think up something that no one can get, but when you reveal it they all knew what that thing is.

Just like that a.i. program, it is easier to win if you think up something that is conceptual, like a hole in one.

Our family version of this is "who am I".  get a yes and keep going.  get a no and its someone elses turn.  We long ago began incorporating characters into the game.  "is this person animated?" is usually an early question.  The adults never guess the newer music personalties.  Never heard of 'em.   <_<

The "Get the Drunk Home" Game.

Try this and see how far you can keep this drunk man up. Good Luck!

You just move your mouse left to right (no clicking) to keep him
walking in a straight line.

The object of the game is to keep him walking, without falling over,
by moving your mouse from left to right or right to left - you can't
see your mouse, which makes it more difficult.

Apparently the record is 82 meters!

Didja ever wonder why the Brakel Brothers seem to have the most time for this kind of stuff.  Some folks just have too much time on their hands. :P Of course, I will admit I liked launching the kitties too.  I only got 820 but I only had so much time to devote to this kind of thing.  Watching the matching posts with the higher and  even higher kitty launches reminded me of when I was a kid.  My parents room was between my brother's and mine.  We would throw rolled up balls of socks at each other.  I could hit him in the bed from my room.  He would have to get out of his room to hit me when I was in my bed.  I guess I had the older brother advantage.  This was just fine until I launched by best Roger Clemens ( ok at that time it was Bob Gibson) fastball and hit my mom as she was walking out of her bedroom to use the bathroom.  It got ugly after that.  I had plenty of time on my hands, but computer games didn't exist yet. ;)

That writing that pops up that you can't see tells you that you have the shot gun available. Hit the shift key to toggle weapons. Usually I get the shot gun on level 3.

Try This

UNBELIEVABLE MATH PROBLEM

Here is a math trick so unbelievable that it will stump you.

1. Grab a calculator. (you won't be able to do this one in your head) 2.
Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area
code)
3. Multiply by 80
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250
9. Divide number by 2

Do you recognize the answer?

I work on a computer all day solving problems that don't always have one correct and good answer.  There are times where I get to a point where I just have to do something else and let a desirable answer come to me or come to grips with the fact that the only right answer is not particularly desirable.  There are times when I'm mentally exhausted and I need to shoot kitties from cannons or kill zombies.  Then I have to go back to deciding whether this cocaine importer with unusually excellent family support and positive letters from the prison employees nonetheless has to do his 20 year minimum, or whether this minority shareholder gets screwed out of his life savings because life just sucks sometimes for some people.

Title: Too Funky For Words
Post by: Bruce Brakel on October 22, 2005, 07:23:33 AM
The top "triangle" has a concave hypotenuse.  The bottom "triangle with a missing square" has a convex hypotenuse.  Since the little component triangle has a slope of 5x:2y the big component triangle should have a slope of 7.5x:3y, but its actual slope is 8x:3y.  [Not sure how you write slopes nowadays.  It's been 30 years since I took algebra.]  Anyway, the two assembled "triangles" are not congruent.
Title: Too Funky For Words
Post by: adoni on October 22, 2005, 11:07:04 AM
Bruce,

I used the convex / concave answer when I explained it to my friend.  When you find the area of the convex / concave thingie ... it's the area of the empty square.  My fellow engineer went about it in a totally mathematical way .. here's his explaination ....

"The diagram gives the illusion that the combined pieces form a true
right triangle.  If this is true then the following must be true:

- The hypothenuse of the large triangle must be equal to the sum of the
two individual hypothenuses.  If this is true, then the following must
be true.

       sqrt( 5*5 + 2*2 ) + sqrt( 8*8 + 3*3 ) = sqrt( 13*13 + 5*5 ).

Since:  13.929 != 12.806, the triangle must not a true triangle.
This is how the 2 diagrams can look as such."

it was bad enough when the message board spammers would make one post, but three in a row is downright annoying.

Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done since we want to keep parts of the message board open to people who don't want to register for an account for whatever personal reasons.

The US Patent Office issued a patent last month for a near light speed spaceship engine that operates by creating a field of warped space-time.  How funky is that?  The guy who obtained the patent has patents on a lot of fairly normal stuff like an autofeed mechanism for weed eaters.  If anyone wants to bet me that this is an urban legend, I'll dig up the US Patent Office webpage where they published the patent.

It sounds like a science fiction story.  Ordinary humanoid looking space alien gets marooned on backward planet.  His society's laws require him not to interfere in the ordinary development of our society by introducing new scientific advancements.  So he makes a living for ten or twenty years "inventing" ordinary common-tech gizmos we have not gotten around to thinking up yet [like the metronomic automobile] that he misses from his home planet.  Then one day he is reading an advanced physics text book to see if it is too soon to invent the microwave extractor [it instantly cools things, just the opposite of a microwave oven, indispensible when you want a properly chilled beverage right now] and says to himself, "Wow.  All the theory for gravity drive is sitting right here in their bollixed up version of quantum mechanics.  All the liquid methane they could ever want or need is sitting on Titan 80 light minutes away.  There has got to be a deal I can make with Exxon-Mobil here that will get me home."

For you serious Star Trek fans, also last month the US military announced that they have invented transparent aluminum, 100 times as strong as glass.  I think they just played Star Trek III in slow motion and copied Scotty's notes.  Again, if you will bet me it is an urban legend, I'll dig up the news article.

I don't believe you Bruce!  I will bet you $0.25 (two bets of $0.25 each) for both those urban legends!  So, let me see the patent and news article.

So this guy and this girl drove to a tournament together this weekend.  The girl wanted to play in the Pro Women's division if any pro women showed up, but not by herself.  The TD was not inclined to run divisions for less than 3 players, and the odds of two pro women showing up seemed slim.  So the guy had an idea.  He gave the girl his entry fee money and said, "Go sign me up for Pro Women as Emily Dickenson.  Tell the TD we're both amateurs and we'll play in Men's Rec or something if no other women sign up."  While she was signing up another woman came in.  She wanted to play Advanced.  The TD told her there were two other amateur women there who were playing pro if she wanted to join them and make it a division.  So she did.

Well, the girl was Kelsey and I was Emily Dickenson.  We found the other woman and explained it to her.  I was going to DNF on the last hole if either one of them suspected I was not a girl.  So my entry fee would be added cash.  Whoever won, however the TD did payouts, it was all going to Kelsey and the other woman, but not to me.  She was fine with that.

The morning round was very close both on score and on staying out of sight of the TD.  He was two holes behind us and I had to duck into the Russian olives once or twice.  Kim hit a couple of early trees on a couple of holes that Kelsey sailed through, and Kelsey was up by three at lunch.  Emily was beating Kelsey by 10 and only losing to Al Schack by three, so we figured the gig was up.  With everyone asking "who's Emily Dickenson?" we thought the TD would figure it out.

Turns out he was clueless.  I think his non-player helper, the representative of the course owner, did the leaderboards and the TD never noticed the under par round in the Women's division.

In the afternoon we started on hole 10 about 100 feet from the TD on hole 1.  There was a little hollow between the holes so I tried to keep out of sight.  In the afternoon Kim started hot and closed the gap.  After nine she had narrowed Kelsey's lead to 1.  It was anybody's game.  Then on an 800 foot hole Kelsey threw three perfect drives and putted in four a 4.  The wheels came off for Kim and she took a seven.  Kim seemed to lose hope or maybe she just ran out of gas, and Kelsey got pumped up.  Going into the last hole Kelsey said, "So, Emily, this is the last hole you know."  And I said, "Right.  And I've had it with you two.  I may be up by 20 but I quit."  I wrote in my DNF and played the hole out just to see.

Once we were in the clubhouse, we handed the card to the non-player helper lady.  She said, "DNF?"  I said "That means, 'Did not finish.'"  So the lady got worried that maybe Emily was sick or injured and Casey, the TD, got worried and they were getting ready to go look for Emily so i had to give myself up.  Casey thought it was funny.  Once the lady finally processed that I was Emily, and I was neither sick nor injured nor an Emily, she said, "So you played in their division just so that they could have a division and one of them could win?"  I said, "Yeah, pretty much."  And she said, "Well, I think that was sweet of you."

Kelsey got her first pro win.

I was prepared to play as Emily today too, but we could not coax another pro woman to the tournament.  Kelsey's debut in Men's Intermediate was a typical first-time-moved-up performance.  She played really badly in the morning and then settled down and won her card in the afternoon.  She was "not last."

I did fairly well in Advanced.  I was tied for the lead in the morning and finished second.  The division was lightly attended and some of the advanced players played up because it was unsanctioned.  My morning score had me one throw behind the open leader, but he beat me by eight by the end of the day!

The course was flooded and quite a bit more challenging than normal.  The TD had no idea that Hole 10 basket had become virtually an inaccessible island.  To get over the water you would have had to walk a quarter mile to a bridge and then walk a quarter mile back to the basket.  So everyone skipped it and someone with a cell phone let the TD know.

I was looking for the etymology of eBay, but all i could find was books on etymology for sale on eBay and this website that is about etymology:  http://www.hotforwords.com/words/

That website could lead to a worldwide revival in etymology!  I posted that link, instead of the front page, because it doesn't have the same spoiler potential as the front page.  As far as I can tell, all the videos are safe for work.

Eventually I found the etymology of eBay but not until I dumbed down my search terms.

And speaking of dumbed down, it's not like some genius found a hot, dumb chick to do this off a teleprompter.  This whole thing is her own concept.  What a country.
