Oly was a good time. The weather held out & there was no rain but it was windy all day.

8 DISContinuum Members played. Dan, Nate, Mitch, Diron, Jon, Todd, Damon, & myself played.

Dan cashed in advanced (Dan shot -6 on the day)
Todd & Damon cashed in intermediate
Jon cashed in recreational

I shot -2 on the day. Think I tied for 9th or ended up 10th. Not sure.

I had the honor and pleasure of being in both Todd & Damons group for the 1st, and 2nd rounds.

Kudos to them both, as Todd is playing the most solid disc golf I have seen him play since we both started. And Damon has one of the best mid-range games I have ever seen, the man doesn't even putt for three, he's just picking up his disc and dumping it in the basket.

Well done guys

Jon Brakel

I was proud to end up at +11 for the day after starting off with +11 for the first round.  :D

I salute Jon's investment strategy yesterday, coming out $7 ahead (at least in 'merchandise value') on a $13 entry fee. I spent $18 and got $15 back, and although I was +5 for the day I still wouldn't have beaten the Rec winner as I recall.

Had I played adv master I wouldn't have DFL'd but still would've been out $28 and probably would have shot worse.
thanks,
Damon

Could I possibly play any worse if I didn't practice putting??

I'm not sure that I would call it an investment. I was very pleased that I was able to shake off that first round and play solidly for the second round. In the two tournaments that I have played rec, I have had many opportunities to teach the rules and courtesy of the game to guys who are playing their first tournaments. I assured the guys that I played the first round with that I was a better TD than I am a player.  ;)  --at least in my own mind!

The hardest thing I've run across to teach is how to keep score. The proper way is to ask each person by name what they got and then repeat that score out loud as you write it down. That way people know that you heard them correctly. Also the score keeper needs to say what they got out loud. Saying "everybody 3 that?" is not a good way as it opens the door for point shavers. If a point shaver thinks that you think that they got a three when they actually got a 4, its easy for them to say "yes". The reason this is hard to teach is because when pointing out the correct way to keep score, the current score keeper immediately because defensive and thinks that you think they are point shaving.

Whatever. I will continue on my quest to teach the rules, and I will continue my journey of supporting the ratings system by playing in the division indicated by my rating.

Jon: My comments weren't at all meant to be snide, it might look that way in print;  I seriously contemplated playing Rec myself, but I'm a lousy teacher.  ;)

For that matter, most of the guys in my 1st group of Ints didn't know the right way to keep score either...

Damon, my "whatever" was in reference to people who think I'm "coming down on them" when I try to teach the rules. I didn't think you were slamming me.

There is no way to teach or enforce rules without coming across as a prick.  It is worse than having an opinion on a message board.

I just tell them, "I'd rather we keep score in the manner described in the rules.  That way everyone knows what everyone else is shooting and there won't be any misunderstandings or errors on the card."

Usually in Advanced they know what the rule is.  Did you carry your rule book with you during the round Jon?

I always carry my rule book at tournaments. But, I never had to get it out because no one ever questioned me that it was the rule.

I played with the ratings template for the first time on this; the number crunching is kind of fun. If I did it correctly, here are some sample ratings/scores....

Dan M. round 1 - 939 (69); round 2 - 923 (69) - avg 932
Brett    rd 1 - 912 (72) rd 2 - 914 (70) - avg 914
Jon    rd 1 814 (83) - rd 2 895 (72) - avg 855
Damon rd 1  877 (76) - rd 2 886 (73) - avg 882

Diron, Todd, Nate didn't have ratings, although there is a chart out there to figure out what their round ratings would be.

Pretty much everyone in the field shot better in the 2nd round, which would explain why Dan's 1st round 69 is 'better' than his 2nd round.

It'll be interesting to see what the final 'official' round ratings are. As it looks now, my overall rating made the tremendous leap of 2 points after all of this.  :P
