Is it out of line to ask for a handicap when playing for tags against people much better than you?  I've never asked for one and would feel a little weird doing it, but I just moved up in tags a bit and I know the next time I play with the people I normally play with, I'll go back to whatever the lowest tag in the group is (I normally loose by about 6-9 strokes - me vs. Neal, Al, and Brian is not a pretty thing as far as my likelyhood of winning goes.  :-\ ).

In the end, it's just a tag that I'll have to give up at the next tournament anyway, so I don't really care.  If it was money, that would be another story.  I was just wondering what the norm is since this is my first year playing for tags.

in casual play tag matches, pretty much anything goes... all that really matters is the whole group playing for tags agrees on the terms before the round starts.

That's cool.  I would feel like a little girl asking for strokes anyway.  I'll just take my lumps now and when I'm better, the whoopin's I'll give will be that much sweeter.  Someday I'll be the whooper instead of the whoopee, I just know it!   :whip2:

There are 2 things you can do that can even the playing field.

Bruce came up with this one & we played it a few years ago. This is just a modiefied version. Take the rating of the highest player in your group. Let them play normal. For every 10 points below that players rating the person/persons playing get 1 cali throw. For example. If you & I were playing i'd get 0 cali strokes and my rating is 979 round it up to 980. If I was playing a player with a 950 rating they would get 3 cali throws. Only 1 cali throw per hole is allowed. If you don't have a rating it's hard to do.

Get the card game Ript & play for tags. As a team you can gang up on the better player to even the playing field. This game is fun and makes you work on other shots. It also makes a course like Fairfield a little more exciting after you've been playing it day after day. I suggest sticking to a 4-some though. It slows the round down a little.

I dunno.  I figure the tags reflect the relative strength of our games.  Brett, if you and I play I don't expect 19 strokes, or any for that matter.  i expect to get smoked.  I don't think I should get your tag because I shoot an 850 round and you shoot a 950 round.  Weaker players will have higher numbers.  Such is life.  The swing players- mostly intermediates, will have a variety of tags.  On a really good day they can beat you and on a really bad day they can lose to me.
