spuds - yes, get a Dell/HP/Lenovo that you can pay extra for downgrade rights for XP. Everybody in their right mind who can is avoiding Vista in lieu of Windows 7 due ~12-18 months.

Oh, and accidental damage protection is a good investment for college students... you know, dorm rooms, small areas, open containers frequently around - you get my drift

your future student should be able to get an educational discount from dell and get a sweet laptop for around 5 to 6 bills. when i resigned from being an oxygen therapist(after 9 years) and started to finish my music production/engineering degree, i got on the dell website and they had a link for students. i had to put in school info and student id number, they verified the info with the school and then i got a laptop like 200 bucks off regular price. they should still offer this, i would think. its only been a year since i got mine.

Micro Center has some good deals both online and off. I was at the store in Chicago and picked up a Lenovo (formerly IBM) desktop replacement for my Mom. Brand new XP machine for $350. I glanced at the laptops and they have a good selection and some good deals through today.

didn't bother with Black Friday stuff - all of my extra money was locked up in my final baseball card purchase up in Milwaukee.  I usually don't go out shopping and break my back just to buy something no matter how good the price.  It's going to be interesting to see how things go with shoppers this year.

Well, I was very happy to stay away from the malls on Friday.  I rode my bike to Glencoe and played the course three times. What a great day.  However, that evening I realized that Black Friday goes beyond holiday shopping.  My wife decided to make bannana bread and some bannana muffins Friday evening. I wound up taking a bag of muffins up to Brown Deer.  We went to a local Walgreens- no buttermilk and no chocolate chips.  We went to CVS-found the chips but still no buttermilk. We went to two 7-11's and still no buttermilk.  At this point we were chasing a flock of wild geese but were in too deep to give up.  We finally went to a local fruit market that was open until  930. We got there at 925 and finally found buttermilk.  :P I have never had to go to five locations to find a simple grocery item.  :o  While the muffins and bread were baking we watched Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel.  I guess our travails were not such a big deal after all.  Its not like we risked getting thrown into the frozen briny deep.

It was worth the hunt. Yum!  :hello2:

Why don't you splurge this time and see if you can find one that includes the ablility to use punctuation?  Or really go all out and get one that also includes upper case letters?

Do you think that you'll need to use Dell customer support at any point in time?  If you purchase your computer at Best Buy or through Dell Home, their primary customer support on those computers are all outsourced overseas.  The computers are generally cheaper though.  If you buy from Dell Small Business, the customer support is all US based.  I spent a good deal of time comparing computers.  The Dell Home computers give you more glitz and glamour, Dell Small Business can give you more of a sturdy feel.  I spent $1600 on my Latitude D830, but tweaked it like crazy and also added 3-year warranty with 3-year drop protection (because I'm planning on using this at disc golf tournaments).  So far it has been worth every penny.  If you want to tweak the systems at all, definitely go through dell.com and not even consider the pre-packaged stuff at Best Buy, etc.  Have fun picking one out!

I was really just glad that the new TV I bought a few weeks back wasn't a highly discounted Black Friday item!
