It's that time of year again.  The 4th Edition of the Random Beaver Round Up is here.  I'm planning on the Packers having a bye that entire weekend so you can concentrate on Beaver Dam deuces instead of football.

Saturday | January 5th, 2007

Some highlights of the event:
It's doubles!
Entry fees are low. ($35 per person)
Everyone receives a player's pack.
100% of entries taken in are paid back out.
Fun, low key, relaxing event.
1 round of best shot and 1 round of modified worst shot with your partner.
1 random draw round with a separate set of prizes!

Here is a link to a printable flyer.

Here is a link to online registration.

We average about 15 to 25 teams per year so be one of them this year and participate in the Random Beaver Round Up IV

What did Eric Peterson have to say about the event last year?  "Sweet tourney as always! Ran smooth as silk."

What if I can not find a partner in time? I am relatively new to the area and do not know a lot of people in the Waukegan/North Chicago area and I would like to play. I live in far west Chicago but I really like playing Beaver. I know that there is a random draw for round two but I want to play best shot as well. If anyone is looking for a partner please PM me. I am an AM III, 850 rated player. Thanks.

...you do know that this is at Beaver (Dam) WI, nw of Milwaukee, not 'Bevier' in Waukegan, right ?  ;)
thanks,

Could I possibly play any worse if I didn't practice putting??

Yes I know.... I have friends that live in Hartford WI and that is where we like to play when I go and visit. Thanks for the show of concern anyway. When I said Waukegan/North Chicago I meant the DiscContinuum Club general area. Sorry for the uncertainty.

DiscCrazy,

I would say posting on this discussion board is a great place to start if you are looking for a partner.  I will also keep my eyes and ears open for you.

This has become one of my favorite events of the year.

Best shot off the longs should have most teams taking just 2's or 3's.  A great way to kick off a brisk winter morning.

Best shot from the shorts in random draw always proves to be fun because never have 2 really good people been matched up and the winning score still is around 15, 16, or 17 under.  Anyone can get anyone else out there and still shoot double digits.  We always say that the middle round is completely optional but I think we've only had 2 or 4 people (total) not compete during the middle round.

Then comes the really good round.  Modified worst shot (sometimes known as tough shot).  It's 'modified' because once one of the two partners make it, then the hole is complete.  Here is where teams really learn to love how smart their partner plays!  This unique format should be in more doubles events.

Damon - thanks for the clarification on Beaver because I could easily see someone making that honest mistake in this case.  I really hope you guys come up for this.  We play three rounds and we are ALWAYS done before dark.  The rounds move VREY quickly because the course is so short and easy (and fun).

Some have seen this and some haven't.  Here is a link to a 6 minute video that shows some of my 'antics' after the Random Beaver Round Up II.  Yes, this was when I was still sponsored by Discraft and I would do it again because that Comet flies so nice!  I aced with that disc later that year.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I have received at least a handful of online or mail in entries thus far.  A few for the Am side of things and a few for the Pro side of things.  Please keep'em coming.

I am planning to visit Beaver Dam at least once (if not twice) between now and the event and I'll triple check all of the tee pads.  They have always been shoveled and salted in the past and that's the plan for this year.

I'll also put up a $25 bounty on rounds 1 and 3.  If a team shoots -18 either of those rounds they will earn $25!  It hasn't been done yet but it's certainly something to shoot for.  (The random draw round has already seen -18 more than once in the past 3 years).

What a difference a few days can make.  Originally they were calling for rain on Saturday but instead a better forecast has come along.

Cloudy but close to 40 degrees on Saturday.  Can you beat that for January 5th?

I have been out to the course twice in the past week and we managed to get every single short tee shoveled/de-iced/shoveled/salted but it has been an incredible amount of work and salt.  My hands are still numb from chopping away at 4 inch chunks of ice.

The bounty MIGHT be withdrawn on round 1 because we MIGHT have to play the shorts that round as well.  No matter what it looks like we'll have some decent weather and plenty of fun out there.  I'm interested to see how the scores compare to the previous 3 years when we had no snow present.

I look forward to seeing teams that are coming from Madison, Appleton, Oshkosh, and Milwaukee.

Be on time because we have 54 holes of golf to play!

Follow Up:

It was a beautiful day at Beaver Dam with winds as mild as the weather.  It was somewhere in the mid 30's for most of the day.  We had snow on the ground for the first time in 4 years but it was melting quickly.

We had a great turnout of 21 teams which means 42 people.  That is a tad above average for this event which is great to see.

As I mentioned at the player's meeting we had a slight change from our normal format.  Typically we do best shot off the longs first round.  Pretty much every single hole is still deuce-able from the longs but they certainly can be tougher to get.

Boscoe, Tom Jenkins, John Terlap, and myself logged over a total of 30 man hours working on those tee pads.  My arms were so sore that I could not chip away another 6 inches of ice on the remaining 5 or 6 tees and that's why we didn't use any of the longs.  Funny that if the event were just a few days later we would not have had to do those 30+ hours of work because now all of that snow is gone.

Anyway - I put together all of the  scores  for the bring your own partner portion of the event.  The random round isn't included because not everyone made good indications of who their partners were on the scorecards.  I do know that Olinger and Sahagian won with a -16 and there were 2 teams at -15 and 5 teams at -14.

The MVP Award went to Tammy Behnke.  She was the ONLY woman to brave the conditions and to come out to represent women disc golfers.  Her and Nolan (Team Bark Busters) have competed 2 years in a row now.

Thanks again for all of the help from my awesome onsite staff which included, Ryan Hornickel, Matt Brock, Tom Jenkins, John Terlap, Mike Schwieger, Luke Reed, and Dane Miller.  Thanks to Subway for giving us some free meal coupons as well as sponsoring a great lunch meal deal.  And thanks to all of my regular sponsors such as Innova, DGA, Discraft, and Lifetime Disc Sports.
