Where is Hole B supposed to be located?  Having a tight shot with a narrow (and unfriendly) fairway might be fun!  But that's just me and my medication talking.  I seriously doubt I can convince myself to get out there at 8am tomorrow, but I should be there by or before 9.

Hey, Y'all...I just played Bevier for the first time this weekend, and wanted to drop a line and introduce myself.

My name is Chris, I've DG'ed in Columbia SC many times with my brother (I graduated from Clemson and have resided in Columbia several times), and now Live in Waukegan (after five years on Addison in Chicago).

Well Bro came up this weekend bearing disks and it looked like Bevier was close and good to go (despite only having nine fixed holes)

We LOVED The course.  Very open, not too difficult (I shot a six under, Matthew shot a seven) (over 18, the same nine twice, no alternative holes.)

So I just want to send a thank you to the group of folks who have maintained the course, designed it and made it their lifeblood. the course was awesome and I'm pleased to call it my new home course.

if anyone ever wants to play (I'm no pro, not ready for tournaments, I'm a disc duffer) on sat. sun mornings, please email me and I'll get you my number, and if you ever need help with maintenance, I am opening a landscape business in the spring, so I am good with my hands in this regard, and have tools....please ask and I will donate my services any time I am free.

Thanks again for such a dedicated group, to produce and maintain a very nice, albeit not impossible course.

and is it a french pronunciation, Bev-ee-ayy]?  or some bastardized american bev-ee-air, bev-ee-err

???

the course smokes. especially when I'm on it.

Why didn't they just get named 10, 11, 12?  is it because of where they're placed?  is it because of the alternate tees making 10-18 (27)?

how do you play these?  Isn't B right after 8's basket?  do you play your nine, eighteen or 27, and then mosey over to ABandC?

please enlighten me...Hyzer Hurth's, my new favorite company is delivering on Thursday, which Means my Frieday Flu is comin on strong.... and if I somehow find the strength to get to work on Frieday, then Satyrday I have to have my S@#T together when I tackle Bevier for the first time with my own disks.......

I love discontinuum so much, I've learned a lot so far, and I would LOVE to get my ass whooped by a board member, so I can ask TOO many questions, regarding throws, equipment, and the meaning of life.....

wish me luck, I am going down that chute, into the depths of disc golf from which I hope to never be brought out alive.

Hello all,

I'm a noob of about three weeks, the first two playing with whamo 130g disks. I purchased a 146g Gremlin and I'm beginning to like it. However my two friends that bought a Leopard and a Dragon are outdriving me by quite a bit. The last guy in our four-some from work has a Roc that he hasn't been throwing well until tonight. He nearly had an ace on #6 tonight! Missed by about 4-5 feet to the right and landed about 10ft behind.

Our home course is Bevier, since I can walk there in about 2 minutes, and another guy lives on the other side of BK. The other two live in Zion.

We played UWP a few days ago and can't wait to go back.

We've only been playing for a week and a half at Bevier and are already fed up with the rude people along the course, mostly at #9 where there were 4-5 people standing with their kids watching the soccer game and ignored our warnings to move back from the chains. It's possible that none of them spoke english. We had to have one guys go across and play defense in case a disk got away from us. We were thinking that the #9 would be better if the basket was on the other side of the creek. You'd still have a water hazard behind and to the left and less of the hassles that I'm sure most of us have had on busy days at Bevier.

There were also guys playing soccer south/southwest of the tennis courts that we were afraid of hitting.

Other than that, we love the course and usually play 36 holes when we go.

Our group best for the front nine is a 28, my best is a 30. Are we doing ok? I see a lot of serious players out there that must be getting a lot of two's and three's.

Well, I thought I'd check in and share a little. I have learned a ton from this site and the forums and wanted to pass along a huge "Thank You" from me and the guys.

By the way -

Welcome Johnny! Hole 9 is pretty hard to get in during the summer becuase of the soccer players & the fans. Our weekly doubles league, Sundays at 10:30, has cut out hole 9 for the remainder of the summer or soccer season, whichever ends first.

We used to have our doubles league on Thursday evenings but permanently switched it to Sunday mornings because there were soccer players all over the park on Thursdays.

*hopefully* WPD is serious about moving all soccer in Waukgean to the sports complex they're building by the lakefront & we can get hole 9 back.

Your suggestion of moving the basket is a very good one & has been discussed in the past. I like it, and think it may end up being harder than the current placement.

Perhaps it should be thought about as a future to-do item, pending approval of Trigg & co.?

Thank you for the welcome. Moving pin #9 would be sweet. Most of the time, my foursome doesn't have a problem because we go at 3:30pm after work during the week. We play 36 holes though, so the last round is where we run into trouble.

QuoteCE-Valkyrie (07-24-2003 10:13 p.m.):

Johnny B,

    Welcome to the board! Sorry to hear about you problems with the soccer players. It's frustrating at times. Did you know there are 2 additional holes on the course? Hole A is in the woods after hole 6 & Hole C is to the east of hole #9. There is a path right next to the tee pad of #9 that leads to the basket of C. If you've only been playing a few weeks & you are scoring 30, you are doing pretty good. Keep practicing. Hopefully we can get that #9 basket move in front of the creek. That would be great to have 2 pin locations.

Thanks for the welcome.

We had more problem with the spectators than the players. We have had a few youngsters offer to retrieve our disks for us after we threw them. We politely tell them to leave it lie, but we get dirty looks like we are refusing their help.

We did play the hole after 6 once. It was brutal! I hit 3 trees with one toss! One guy in my group hit it in 2, he got lucky! We tried to find the one after 8 and could not. The one after 9 we found the basket, but no tee.

I need more practice for sure. The other 3 guys have scored a 2 on several holes, while my best on any hole is still a 3. =(

:) #9 alternate basket placement went in the ground today. Adrian did a great job making an anchor & collar for the basket. We place wood chips around the basket as well. I have the key so we'll be able to move it back & forth with ease. Thanks Adrian!

a little shorter, but a fun hole!  we'll use the short pin placement for the Ace Race, OK, Myk?

The relocation of some of the alternate tees was all suggested by Brett.
These are excellent changes (although some provide slightly less challenge, changing things around is good for the course) and will improve flow during the Blast.
This is heads up thinking coach!

:wacko: They took away my little smoker guy so I'm trying to find a good substitute.  How's this one?

Jim,
I'm all for throwing from the short placement on 9 during the ace race.  During the blast, I think it should be in the long though, if that's cool with you.

I came back through here to re-read my original posts, thought I'd share how I've been coming along with my (our) game. Sorry about the long post. I'm feeling chatty tonight.

When I last reported, I had just bought a 146 DX Gremlin at Sports Authority.

I now own, in order (and grouping) of purchase:
 168 DX Leopard

 150 DX Eagle
 148 DX Shark
 150 DX Aviar Putt & Approach

 180 DX Shark

 175 DX Gremlin
 172 JK Valkrie

 167 DX Roc

And on order:
 168 JK Valkrie
 165 Champ. Eagle
 168 DX Aviar Putt & Approach

Buying disks is addictive! I don't know when I'll stop!

I thought the 146 Gremlin was holding me back against my friends Dragons and Leopards, so I got the 168 Leopard. Had inconsistant results with that, so I decided to make another purchase. Did some homework online that night. Decided that lighter disks might help.

Enter the 150 Shark, 148 Eagle, and 150 Aviar putter. The Shark's rim feels funny in my hand, so I rarely use it, even though it is toted as the best all around disk on many sites. My Eagle became my primary driver, but was still shanking a lot of shots to the left. The Aviar putter is awesome! I use it on #4 and $6 at Bevier for those short, sweeping, right hand shots. However some of my putts blew off course with the light disk. Also picked up a small Innova game bag. Nice.

Picked up the 180 Shark at Sports Authority on a whim, due to a few reviews saying that they prefered a heavier Shark. I rarely use it.

So, now we have been playing Bevier and UWP for the last 2 months at least once or twice a week. Really stinking it up, shanking a lot of drives to the left. I'd been using a 4-finger grip for my drives up until a few weeks ago. Even the drives that do go straight, are much shorter that my friends' drives.

Started using a 2-finger grip as a goof one day. One of the guys in my 4-some has always driven like this, so I thought I'd try it. MY drives started improving. Straighter and much longer.

So, 2 weeks ago, I start really stretching my drives out ( I figure around 200-225' on a good drive) using this technique. However, I start driving my Eagle and Leopard hard right turn on every hard drive. They just keep turning right unless I back off a little. Every time I try to flatten a hyzer release, I shank it left.

So, figuring I have outgrown the lighter 150 Eagle and even 168 Leopard, I pick up a 172 JK Valkrie at Sports Authority the next day. Also picked up a 175 Gremlin to go with my 146.

I must admit, I almost sold the Valkrie the day I bought it. I couldn't throw it for nothing. But I stuck with it, and now I can drive at least 250-275' with it. I think that's pretty good for an overweight guy in his 30's that just started throwing in July.

Picked up the 167 Roc at Play it Again on the way to UWP Friday, and I love it!! Should have bought that instead of the 2 Sharks a long time ago. I use it for longer putts and windier conditions. Great disk!

Which brings me to my latest order. The 172 Valkrie still seems a little heavy for my noodle arm, so I ordered a cool purple 168 JK. I wanted a 165, but all they had was 168. I love the rim shape and size on my Valkrie, just wanted a little lighter version in a cool color. I will probably keep my 172 though.

I'm gonna sell my 168 Leopard and 150 Eagle to one of my friends, and replace them with the 165 Champion Eagle as a backup to the Valkries.

Also gonna sell the lighter 150 Aviar putter and replace it with a 168.

So here I am, 3 months into the sport with a bag full of disks and having the time of my life!

My current personal bests on Bevier's 12 are:
H1=2 (That willow tree messes with my mind!)
H2=2
H3=2
H4=2
H5=3
H6=2
HA=3
H7=3
H8=2
HB=4 (Very hard hole for me, temporarly lost my 175 Gremlin today on my drive under the bridge! Best drive ever for me on that hole, would have been a 3, but took a water penalty)
HC=3
H9=3

I'm still lacking that elusive ace though. Closest chances so far were on #4 and #6.

I want to close this huge post with a big thanks to everyone that frequents these boards. I read just about every post and take notes when I find some info that might help me. I try to get in a round or two every day that I'm free and weather permitting.

Sorry again for the long post. I hope someone enjoys my story.  :unsure:

That is great to hear! :D  You sound just like me 2.5 years ago. I had just started play & got addicted. I had no clue what discs would work so I just started ordering. Good luck. Sounds like you are getting better every day.

Since I haven't been out there in 3 weeks, how does the course look?  are the bridges holding up?

mirth

The course is in very good shape. Adrian's bridges are holding up fabulously! WPD graded, spread seed, and spread hay back on the fairway for hole C... some grass is already starting to appear! Next summer it should no longer be a muddy pit whenever it rains.
There will be patches that will need to be reseeded, but thats to be expected.
Don't forget your towel!

frsty50

Are A, B, or C going to get concrete pads in the future?
I think the course looks great. We have played every day this week so far.

It would be nice, wouldn't it?

Perhaps we should start a letter writing campaign to WPD....

No cement tees until the final 18-hole layout (see 5-year plan posts) is approved in 2004 or 2005.

However,
2.5 years of asking, begging, bitching, complaining, pleading, and coaxing have paid off finally!

Within the next 2 weeks, a brand new (and very expensive) BULLETIN BOARD will be installed between the tee for Hole 1 and the creek.  It will be permanent and lockable!  The size is approximately 4ft x 6ft.

THANKS to Scott McLean and Mike Trigg of the Waukegan Park District for making this happen!!!
THANKS also to the CALLAHAN FAMILY for the fund from which this bulletin board was paid from.

SUMMARY:
In two short years, we've replaced 3 stolen/broken baskets, added 3 baskets, added 27 teepads, 2 bridges, chain upgrades, and now a bulletin board.
THANKS to everyone who has helped in any way to the improvements of Henry Pfau Callahan Disc Golf Course at Bevier Park!!!!!
