This weekend WI has singles on Saturday for the Badger State Games and doubles on Sunday.  These are the only events all year long that people can go and actually win medals in disc golf.  It's pretty cool.  Also, the park and rec people and WIAA people look at the turnout in these given events and really determine just how 'popular' our sport is.  For those reasons, it's very important to have good representation a the disc golf games.

So with these events being very amateur geared, will there be anything special in the pro divisions?  I know it's a b-tier for ams and a c-tier for pros but I don't understand the logic behind that.  With all of the talk of unbelievable am payouts, will the pro payouts be just as awesome?  Just wondering.

Thanks,

Terry,
Pros will be playing for the entire Pro entry fee. Unlike WI, Illinois has very few disc retailers and supporters of the game. It is very hard to find sponsorship $ to add to the pro divisions. Jon, Bruce, & I spend a lot of time to make this happen. None of us have the time to spend more time to find sponsors. That is why the Pro Divisions are C-Tier. We don't have $500.00 added cash to make it a B-Tier. We can however offer great Am payouts because those are controlled by the TD.

Thank you for the interest. I hope this helps and that you give the Illinois Open Series a try.

Below are the payouts from last years event.

2003 Illinois Open
Entry fee was $50.00
$50.00 X 10 = $500.00
$530.00 was paid out. $30.00 added from a cash sponsor.

These posts were in the Streamwood thread for some crazy reason... I figured it was a good idea to get them their own home!

Terry is referring to the IO Series when he's talking about AM payouts.

Thanks for the info Brett.  Dan said, "all i saw advertised was 100% AM payouts. i don't think thats "unbelievable". " and that's fine.  I was asking simply because there is TONS OF HYPE about how great these payouts would be (I'm referring to the tons of posts on the PDGA board from Jon comparing 'his' events to all the other events around) and so that's why I was asking if there was as much effort put into the pro purse as the am purse.

I don't want anyone jumping on me for any of the wrong reasons.  I myself am a TD and work towards making this sport better for everyone as well.  I was really just asking if there was added cash or anything like that since there was so much hype around the am payouts.  That's all.   Thanks for the info.

I think I compared my events to the events that I've played in the four states where I have played disc golf. With a few notable exceptions all of the "added cash" has come from the amateurs. Some of those tournaments also paid the Ams 100% and their added cash for the pros came strictly from the Am merch profit. Because the current system requires Ams to buy merch, I think that money should go back to the Ams. The merch profit is also where we get the money to pay for our expenses and raise money for the Jr. Girls fund.

I don't have any problem with having pros at my tournaments. The C-tier minimum payout for pros is 85% less fees. I guarantee that I will payout 100% less fees. Would anyone call that added cash? But when TDs take 15% off the Ams and give it to the pros somehow that is called added cash. I'll never understand that. When I have real added cash from outside the tournament process, I would love to run the pro side as a B-tier as well.

Putting on a tournament is a lot of work and I don't knock any TDs for how they devise their payout structure. I am an advocate of full disclosure. I think players should know what kind of value they will be getting before they play a tournament. I'd like to hear sometime from a TD at the awards thanking all the Am players for the "added cash" for the pros.

Terry, I don't think I've ever played one of your tournaments so you shouldn't take any of my talk personally.
