Well I guess I am going to go to a tourny for the first time in the up coming weeks. Since it seems that everyone here has played in some sort of tourny, I wanted to know if there is anything I should know, watch out for, meet a certain someone, or anything about my first tourny?

Bruce Brakel

Add four throws to how good you think you are and feel fine if you can beat that score.  What I always hear from first-time tournament players is, "I'm really a lot better than this."  I'm always thinking, "Hey, this is reality too."

Don't be afraid to ask questions/clarifications.

Try to overcome nervousness (if there is any) by thinking: Hey, it's disc golf and I'm having fun. ( This is most times easier said than done. )

Try to learn something new from the experience. You're probably going to be playing with players you've never played with before.

Good Luck.

Be sure to let the TD know this is your first tourney. Most are willing to give newbies an overview of marking your disc, penalties, casual water, and the like.

Quit work, play disc golf :)

Also take plenty of fluids and something for lunch-you never know how much time you'll have for a break and how far you are from real food. Leave earlier than you think you need to travel (to allow for the inevitable getting lost or having to park far away from tourney central). And most of all, have fun!

Bring a few extra discs in case you lose something.  Also play SMART, if there is a for sure easy par or a 25% deuce that can easily turn into a bogie take the par.  Like Tree stated bring something to munch on during the round.  It seems like I always need something to eat a little over half way through the round.

Have fun and be courteous while you are playing.  Don't be afraid to talk to people during the breaks in play if you want to.

What is the tourny that you are going to play?

Yeah i've got one. He has been playing a little longer then I have but he is also better then I am. I have been playing like non stop after school for like the past week. I even think I might take tuesday off to go play all day. How do this type of tourny work? Is it like best score, best frisbee? I have no clue on how its going to work.

Dan Michler

It works like this:

You and your partner both throw and then choose which shot you like better.  Then you both throw from that lie and on and on.

At the end of the round you will add up the score from each hole to give yourself a total, or "cumulative", "score".  This number will be your "score".  Report your "score" to the Tournament Director and he will compare your "score" with the "scores" of other teams which have also payed the required entry fee and selected to play in the identical division that you selected previous to the start of the tournament.  If you have say, the 3rd lowest "score", then you would finish in "3rd Place", and receive the accompanying "3rd Place" prize.

Good Luck!

I remember my first tournament as if it were just 19 years ago.  My advice for you Stewie, my young apprentice, is to not wear underwear and put on plenty of Gold Bond Medicated powder.  You see Stewie, there is alot of walking in disc golf and this walking will result some unwanted chaffing in some sensitive areas.  If your ass is chapped, forget about it brother, your tournament is done.

Also, I would volunteer to be the one to turn in the scorecard at the end of your round.  Assuming you have used pencil to keep score, this will allow you to erase any unwanted bogies and replace them with nice safe pars while nobody is watching.  Feel free to do this for up to 2 or 3 holes per round.  And remember to have fun Stewie!  Thats what its all about!  Having fun and winning at any cost  :)

Do I need to be a part of the club to play in the touny on the 21th? Or do I have to pay a larger entry fee?

mirth

Our ice bowl on the 20th of February? No, all the club's events are open to the public. If you come, bring a donation item for PADS - ie: canned/dry goods, juice, etc. I think there is a higher entry fee if you don't bring a donation item.
