Hey guys and gals(?).  My name is Josh and I live about 2 miles from Shady Oaks (Streamwood) and I have been throwing discs for a couple years but very limited.  This year I signed up for a PDGA membership and I actually just purchased 6 new discs (in the past I only had 3 total for all the years I was playing and all dx plastic).  I am totally excited for DG right now and I have been going to either Clark Park or Shady Oaks after work whenever the weather is nice.  The weekends I'll go out to Buffalo Grove, or a couple of the Naperville area courses.  If anyone lives out by me I'd like to know if there are any leagues or tourneys to get involved in.  Well thanks admins for having this site so that I can play with other people near me (hopefully)

Check out the IOS 2005 thread or www.brashcash.com - There is a tournament series that starts tomorrow at the University of Wisconsin @Parkside. It takes place at 7 different courses throughout the NW suburbs (with a stop in WI). Also stop by the "leagues and tourneys" section of this message board.

I know Streamwood has a Tuesday night Blind draw doubles league. I have never played in it, but, I do live pretty close to Shady Oaks myself, so I play there quite a bit. If your ever just looking for someone to throw with, let me know.

Cool, good to know.  If it's nice out tomorrow I'll check it out.  When the weather has been nice I have been going after work.  I can get to the park by 6.  I haven't played in any tournaments/leagues yet what is "blind draw"

Sorry, that's when you get everyone together and either draw numbers or names for your partners. "Blind" being you don't know who your partner will be. Then you play a best shot round.

Had a good time playing Madison Meadows last night.  Definately love the improvements they made (cement tees, new signs, and signs pointing to "next tee")

Blind draw is the sucker bet of disc golf.  Think about it.  Only a pro can be on a team with two pro players and on his worst draw his team still has one pro on it.  Only a novice can be on a team with two novices.  

It is also cheap fun and you might get a lesson from a pro.  Whatever floats your boat!  :grin:

This is different from how Discontinuum does their Sunday league (and how some other leagues in the area do it). We have an upper and lower pool, and we draw cards to combine an upper pool player with a lower pool player.

This system ensures that Brett always wins.

True, but at your league the formula works out like this:  Only Brett is guaranteed to be on Brett's team.  It is not Brett's fault that Discontinuum is the only league I know of where recreational rated players are the bubble boys between pro and am depending on who shows up!  O.k., let's see if this emoticon code works:

I wasn't quite sure of all of the terminology. I don't want to say for sure that Streamwood doesn't use and upper and lower pool also. I've never played, so I don't know. All I meant by "blind" was that you don't bring a partner to play with, it's drawn there.

Streamwood just does one pool but it is a fairly balanced group of guys that show up, so it isn't as unfair as Bruce's example. However, doing one pool discourages new players from joining, in my opinion. By new players I mean new to the sport, not to the league.

I play Devil's advocate  to the point that Jon just made.  A Pro doesn't want to have to carry the team week in and week out.  It's nice to be matched with someone that you have confidence in.  This way you can be a little more risky with shot selection and be more laid back, which is a big draw to playing doubles.  Pros don't always cash when they are put together.  When Serg and I get paired out at Parkside we usually walk away with at least our money back.  

I personally have no problem playing either way, all that I want is for the league to be consistent with using pools or blind draw.

I think the upper/lower method usually makes for much better competition. I know I have zero chance if Brian and Serg are teamed together. Normally the distinction between upper and lower at Bevier and Fairfield (where I have played) is not great. The upper players are more consistent. The problem is frankly lower players such as myself. I do not have the distance off the tee that other players have. My shot will only be used on shorter holes or where my partner screws up his/her shot.This puts more pressure on the upper player. There is also a problem where players are on the bubble between upper and lower. Last week Nick lost a fip with Kenny. He played upper and was paired with me. Kenny played lower and took home the $.
