New Course in Roselle

So far I don't have a lot of information on it except it's only a nine holer. I work right by it, that's how I found out about it. Here is the information I have on it. I suppose 9 is better than none.

DISC GOLF COURSE OPENS MAY 21ST

The Roselle Park District will hold a Grand Opening Celebration for its new Disc (Frisbee) Golf Course on Saturday, May 21st at 11:30 a.m. The nine-hole course will be located at Goose Lake Park, adjacent to Waterbury School. The Grand Opening Ceremony will include ribbon-cutting, refreshments and speeches from local dignitaries. Then at 12:00 p.m., pre-registered players will participate in a scramble-start disc golf tournament. This new village amenity was made possible from a $5,000 donation to the Park District from the Taste of Roselle Commission. There's talk of Disc Golf someday becoming an Olympic Sport. Come and see what it's all about.

I played nine there today at lunch. It's a longer course for sure. Not an overly challenging course though. Your major obstacle will be the larger grasses that will grow up around it by mid summer. I didn't take any notes because I was rushed at lunch, but, this is what I remember.

1. You can choose either a hyzer or anhyzer shot here as there is a large clump of trees blocking your direct shot. After that it's a wide open hole.

2. Straight as an arrow 340 ft. field on left OB and grass on right. Neither should really come into play with any decent shot.

3 kind of wide open straight 275 ft. I say kind of wide open because of tall grass on right and tall grass on left, very tight fairway. If you don't make 275, you'll probably be in the grass. Really, no obstacles unless the grass gets above 5 ft.

4. Wide open 425 ft. Small clump of trees guarding basket. Other than distance, not really a challenge though.

5. This is a nice hole. 515 ft. with a nice right hand bend and trees guarding the right side of the fairway.

6. WOW - long walk back to six. You have to walk back past 3 and 2 to get to six. I question that design. After that, it's a nice hole. Big hyzer shot here 360 ft. with tall grass and trees to the left and a ball field right at the dogleg that is OB, forcing you to either lay short make sure you hit your hyzer.

7. Tight 240 ft. hole. Tall grass and trees on left, ball field and trees to the right. Plays anhyzer because of the trees on the right. It's a pretty tight fairway.

8. Pretty open 350 ft, uphill for the most part. There is a tree and hill guarding a straight shot and the tall grass everywhere. Keep an eye on your disc here.

9. Trees  to the left of this 305 ft. anhyzer shot. Other than the tall grass and some trees surrounding the hole at the end it's another fairly open hole.

That's it for the most part. Over all it's a pretty open course. Players with a big arm might find it way too easy here. The one thing that will really change the play of this course is the grasses. If they end up growing pretty tall, a couple of these holes that seem wide open will be very difficult. Because it's kind of a wetland area, I could see them getting to 5ft or so. The tee pads are crushed limestone packed inside of large landscaping timbers. The footing was pretty good in my opinion. I'm excited because it's a nice change from Clark park. Actually, the exact opposite of Clark. I'd like to hear others opinions on it though.

I drove by and thought I saw you out there, but wasn't sure if it was you. I had to run 2 other errands at lunch, though, so I didn't have time to get out and play. Is number 1 by the entrance that is next to the school?

Yes, it is. We parked in the lot for the scool then just follow the path back to hole #1. It's near the far ball field.


EDIT:
I was thinking though, over by hole 4 and five, near a playground. There is a road, I believe it's called Mensching Rd. If you could park on the street, that would be a better place to start. You'd start on #5 and finish on #4. If you are in a hurry, it's a bit of a walk to get to #1, then again back to the lot from #9. Not a huge walk, but about the length of a hole. Maybe 200-250 ft, then further back from 9. And with the crossback walk by #3 and #2, it does seem like a lot of wasted walking.


Oh yeah, another thing, the wind will play a huge part here. It's an open course, even more open than Clark park. On a windy day, it will feel twice as intense.

Played this one again last night. I noticed something playing alone I didn't notice playing with a group at lunch. Make sure you are very accurate with your throws or play with someone else. The weeds are so tight to fairwas and thick on 3,7,8 and to a lesser extent 9, that even off just a little bit can lead to a lengthy time looking for your disc. I like the difficulty factor of having to make a good shot, I just hate the idea of possibly losing a disc on each one of these holes. The grass is thick enough that I could see by the grass I matted down, I had walked within 2 feet of my disc twice before I found it. Another person makes it a lot easier to track any errant throws.

No, I do not like it better than shady Oaks. I love 18 hole courses. Being able to play 18 without repeating a hole is always big for bonus points for me. I've also changed my thinking about liking it better than Clark Park. I think it was more a newness factor. Not that either is terribly challenging, but, I would consider them both equally challenging. Clark is short with some trees blocking the direct path. This course is long without many obstacles at all. Even the tall grass doesn't do anything but make it tough to find your disc. There really is no bad part to going in the taller grass other than you might not find your disc. If you find it, your shot is no more difficult than it would be from short fairway grass. What makes this course a bit of a challenge is the distance, but it's so open overall I don't find it any more challenging than Clark. If you have a big arm, this course would be pretty easy.

Gotcha. I would rather play a 18 hole course as well (as would most I assume). About the only time I ever play 9 hole courses is if I'm really short on time or if it's a new course for me to tryout. Thanks for replying and letting me know your opinion. It was much appreciated.

played this one today.  mostly open with some length and some nasty shule as dave pointed out earlier.  could've easily lost my CE leopard on 9.  its basically like every other 9 holer around here, nothing to get too excited about.

I have been playing here a decent amount lately.  All but one of the baskets have been vandelized and are missing the rings at the bottom of the chains so you have to be carefull when putting to avoid shoot throughs and bounce outs from chains outside the basket area.  The grasses that create the obstacles for this course are fully up.  Tight fairways are nice.  All though its fairly wide open in parts, I still think it's a pretty fun nine hole, especially since I have never seen anybody else playing it.  Good course to practice your approach shot since most holes I would consider approaches from the tee, and with the layout you need to be fairly accurate.  I really enjoy the fact that they have very clearly defined fairways as well as greens.  They cut the grass shorter in about a 25-30 foot ring around the baskets that have that much room around them.  Also a good course to practice rolling on.  I hope they fix the baskets soon, but considering I never see anyone out the I will assume that it is not much of a concern.

I went out there once only because I knew they had a playground there and I was with my niece and nephews who were going to play on the playground once we got to that portion of the course.  There actually was one other group of about 4 people playing the day that we went.  I didn't finish the course because it's just really not worth my time.  I do agree with the nice fairways though.  I loved how one of the residents was outside with the kids playing baseball and had them stop so that he could watch us putt.  He wanted to see "how this game worked".  That was neat, but otherwise... meh.  I couldn't find the tee for hole 1 or 5.  I didn't play 6-9.  My wife also lost a disc on the right side of the fairway on hole 3.  Man was that a pain going through that stuff.  I don't know if that section was still trampled from our searching... probably not.  It was a nice dyed Pro TeeBird-L too.  I wrote her name on the disc JUST before playing that hole because I knew she would be prone to throwing into that stuff.  She doesn't really aim, she just throws in the general direction of the basket lol.  Then when the disc has lots of fade since she doesn't put a lot of spin onto it.. plunk, right into the stuff off to the right (she's a leftie too).

It was sad to see the baskets not in tip-top shape... it's uncalled for to vandalize stuff like that.  Hopefully one day it will be better!

Where do you park at for that course?  I parked in the elementary school parking lot near those basketball hoops, but was curious if there was someplace else that I should have been at.

Brother in law took time to fix every basket, added chains where needed and put in some make-shift binding rings for those that needed them, so this course is back to playable.  Makes for a fun quick 9 hole round now that the baskets work correctly.  Probably gonna catch a quick nine here after work if anyone is interested.
