Someone wake me up when ratings get posted? My guess is that I will be rated 874!  :D

I stayed up late last night working on a 50-sticker mosaic dyed disc and playing Scrabble with Michelle Wade.  But really I was hoping to get ratings.  My rating is just going to drop a point or two due to the new system, but I was curious about Kelsey's rating.

done.

the system uses your 8+ most recent rounds that are within the standard deviation? wonder how long until my sub 840 rounds will disappear.... Of course, I guess this means I need to get a little more consistent! :)

I think it uses more than just your most recent eight. But it double weights your most recent eight rounds.

The new formula uses your last year's worth of rounds.  Bad rounds drop out automatically after a year.  But, if you don't have eight rounds in the last year they will reach back up to another year to get eight rounds.

Under the new system more of your bad rounds are going to be included in your rating.  Most players won't be dropping any rounds at all.  The only way to get rid of a bad round is to make sure you get in eight rated this year and then wait for it to drop off.

Kelsey Brakel is tied for the 50th highest amateur women's ratings!

Brett is in the top 50 for amateur men, but I didn't count how many. My guess just looking at the list is about 30.

Kelsey doesn't care.  She only cares about how many men she beats and how much Barratt beats her by.  She knows how good all the rest of the women are.  And she also knows that she is not quite as good as a fat, broken down, old man throwing with his off hand.

I forgot to tell her today, "When you can snatch this pebble out of my hand, grasshopper..." but I did beat her by one at league!

Intersting (or not) ratings facts:

Brett is the highest rated amateur in Illinois. There are only 38 amateur men in Illinois with an Advanced rating. There are 37 rated pros in Illinois. Four of them have sub-advanced ratings. Only 1 pro in Illinois has a 1000+ rating. That's Illinois' number one rated pro (and the answer to the trivia question "Who won the first Illinois Open?"), Kris Hutter, coming in at an even 1000! There are 3 rated pro women in Illinois and 11 rated amateur women. There are 156 rated amateur men in Illinois. The lowest rated amateur "man" in Illinois is named Michelle and played one event...in the women's division. I'm guessing this is a mistake!  :D

Interesting facts part deux

Brett is in the appropriate division.  He is a high AM.  However, some knucklehead recently said he was sandbagging by playing AM.  He would be well over #500 if he was a pro.

I had the pleasure of playing with young Kelsey during the round where she went over 800. Way to go girl.  And no, I was not the lowest rated AM in Illinois!  Damn close, but not at the bottom.  Too bad, we could have had the bookends. ;)

I totally agree. There are about 90 pros with ratings of 1000+ which is why I think once a person reaches a rating of 1000 they might want to think about turning pro. But that decision really is up to each player individually. Some guys turn pro earlier and some later...people should respect other people's rights to decide when and if to turn pro.

Pointing out that Brett is the top rated amateur in Illinois really illustrates where Illinois currently falls in the competitive arena of disc golf. Brett is the big Am fish in a small Am farm. If Brett were going to Worlds this year, according to ratings, he'd finish somewhere around 40 or so. At Worlds Brett is a medium Am fish in a big Am farm.

Brett is in the right division because he has not taken sanctioned pro cash.  Period.  End of argument.  If there was an Amateur Open division we'd move him up but there isn't so the whiners just need to take it up a notch, or move down to a division indicated by their rating.

Any other argument requires that all the rest of us accept the whiners' values. But we aren't playing by their rules; we're playing by PDGA rules.  Under PDGA rules advanced is for the best players who have not taken pro cash, and for pros rated less than 955 at events which are not Majors.

Usually the whiners are the 900 rated players who fancy themselves as advanced.  ["Fancy" in this context is an English verb for fantasize!]    They need to move down and win a little against the rec players who are hiding from Kelsey in intermediate.   :D

Sandbagging is when you trash your rating or handicap to qualify for a lower division than you would otherwise be eligible to play in.  I'm going to play left handed until my right arm comes back from the shop.  When I get my right arm back you can all call me a sandbagger.   ;)

There is a difference between not going pro and sandbagging.  Was everyone chanting, "Move up!" at the star juniors at the end of the NCAA basketball championships?  I doubt it.  Some NBA scouts were, I'm sure!

Just a note about the July ratings update and IOS #3.  First a quote from Chuck Kennedy:
QuoteThe cutoff date for events to be in this ratings update was Friday, June 24th. Reports had to be to Dave Gentry by then.
Jon did not get the IOS #3 report done on time because IOS #3 was held on June 25 and 26.
