Nice article. Where do you suppose they found the woman in the picture? My guess is they found her in 1982.

You gotta love cheap stock photo! Either that or they had it lying around in their archives and were just waiting for that perfect chance to use it.

And yes, it is a nice article.

On a related note to point #1 on Getting started "Find and easy 18 hole course with holes less than 300ft. apart" I ran into a young kid yesterday at Clark Park as I had just finished up 9. He was just ahead of me and clearly looked like this was one of his first couple of times playing. He asked me, "How did you shoot? What's you score?" I told him, "So far I'm 3 Under." He starts to laugh and tells me, "Your'e not to good! I got six under!" "WOW!" I said, "That's pretty good." And we went our separate ways. On my next nine I noticed something I had never paid any attention to before. And that being all of the recreational pars on the course. Most are 4 and 5's. I never paid close attention to the new signs because there weren't many there when I first started to play clark. I at least started to feel a little bit better hoping that he was going by those pars. I still feel a little bummed being told by a 12 year old beginner I'm not too good.

That's funny, the same thing happened to me...  I explained to him that I played this course as a par 3 and he freaked out...  he could not believe that I could be 7or 8 down, so I played a few holes with him and showed him some pointers..

It's days like that where I accaully relize why I love this sport...
Let us hope that the whores of evil no longer loiter on the doorsteps of your path beckoning you into the brothel of despair, and that here and after may present them with the most rigid manistfestation of a firm and manly will.

People will tell the same kind of thing. Guys call me all the time to ask me what division to play. Most of them usually are not satisfied when I tell them to play Rec at their first tournament. I usually get a "Well...I'm actually pretty good. I'm better than all my friends and I shoot a few under par." That's when I usually ask them what par is.  :D  Usually once I explain that the best Rec players are playing + or -a couple of throws compared to par threes depending on the course, we come back to me telling them to play Rec at their first tournament!

Which means that things have come full circle. I played my first tournament in 1982 or so at Adler. It was the first year that the course was 18 baskets. At the registration I asked the guy which division I should play. I have no idea what they called Rec at the time but that's what he suggested. I started to think "I should tell this guy that I've been playing for 4 years and I'm really pretty good!" But then I looked around and saw all these guys with their bags and just said "OK" and went about my business. I finished DFL although I did finish above the two guys who DNF'd!
