I used to use an 8 D-Cell blacklight lantern, looks like a Coleman white gas type lantern.
Pretty much any portable blacklight will be good, provided it uses real fluorescent blacklight tubes. Incandescent blacklights are shit.

This was discussed in another thread so I figured i'd post here.

If you are not using the Thill bobber lights you are at a bid disadvantage. Red is by far the best.

I have not found them to affect the flight of a disc at all. I use all clear Champion drivers and like to attach them to the bottom of the disc in the center. I use clear duct tape. I use a longer piece and pinch it very tight around the end of the bobber. Regular duct tape would work for me as well since I do not cover the light up. I only use tape the width of the bottom of the bobber light. The clear tape peels and makes transfer of lights much easier. I have not had a light fall off yet. On my Rocs & Aviar I tape them on the top and find no affect since they are flying at low speeds.

I just got 50 bobber lights today. If anyone is interested in buying some from me, shoot me a PM. I'll give you a better price than you can find in any store.

ARE THEY TWIST STYLE OR PUSH AND PULL?

mirth

I don't like the twists... ran into them the first time on saturday. seemed harder to keep those turned on.

Not to play devil's advocate, but (you know there had to be one), I had -zero- problems with the red LED's that were twisted to turn on.  I didn't do what brett did with leaving the light itself exposed though, I taped over it.  It never turned off until I twisted it to off.  It also survived about 5 minutes in the creek on hole B after it fell off the disc.  I'm sure the push/pull ones will survive no problem as well, but it was nice seeing the LED turn right back on after taking it out of the water!

yeah i know, but you also place it inside the bobber, so you figure maybe it stays dry in there mostly... plus since I don't really go fishing, you don't trust it until you test it you know?  good point though :)

The Red LED rocks.  I liked your idea Breat of putting the Green one on your hat.  I kept having trouble figuring out where my brother went.  Another great idea was the flashing red light that was on a bag... I think that was Mukey?  One of the guys in the other group kept putting his discs and hard cider in/near my bag thinking that it was his partner's.

For those that like the glow discs themselves, it looks like Innova has the glow Sidewinder now available, great disc :)  It has helped my lefty throw park hole 2 at Bevier multiple times with a nice giant S-curve.

Yeah, that was me, but I can't take the credit. The 2 flashers I had for my partner & I were from playing Gary Lewis' glow tournaments and he always gives those out before the night round to everyone so that people can tell if someone is in a throwing area.

I've never played glow but am considering showing up at Streamwood one of these nights or perhaps getting to Fairfield if Brett runs his renegade Thursday night games in the winer.  I have a few questions-- Do you use multiple lights on all the discs you plan to throw?  Or, do you take the light on and off discs as you use them? Do you play a smaller bag and throw just a handful of discs? Do you put the lights on all the discs before you play or do you put them on as you use them?  I have one of those Petzl headlight things  that I mainly use for barbequeing in the dark.  I can see how done the meat is.  Do these have any value for walking around the course and making sure you don't kill yourself walking into something?  Do you have to light up all the baskets before you play?

I never thought a so-called glow disc would be worth much unless you brought a powerful light source with you to juice it up as you went.  They run out of power too quickly.  I have an original whammo moonlighter golf disc from the late 1970's.  It still holds a glow but a backyard glow not a golf course glow.

Then props to Gary Lewis because that's a really good idea.  The would have really come in handy when my group went to play hole 8 because we weren't sure if it was clear or not.  I think it was Dan that responded to our yell, "yeah, it's been clear for an hour" lol.  We couldn't tell because we saw all these flashing lights from behind the basket, but it was actually people at the tee for B.  Thankfully the backup on hole B was only during the first round (for my group at least)

I'll have to try to find some of those flashers.  They shouldn't cost too much.  Even a glow ring to put around your bag would work well to help others see that the group ahead of them has not holed out yet.

I never thought a so-called glow disc would be worth much unless you brought a powerful light source with you to juice it up as you went.  They run out of power too quickly.  I have an original whammo moonlighter golf disc from the late 1970's.  It still holds a glow but a backyard glow not a golf course glow.

Somebody at the Widdershins tournament had some sort of strobe light or something that he flashed on the disc and immediately made it glow.  I presume it glowed long enough to make it through at least one hole.

As far as lights, I would honestly recommend just going with these and buying a bunch of the LED lights that Brett mentioned.  Cover them with Clear duct tape, and you should be set.  Everyone put their glow materials on their discs ahead of time.  I noticed that by the 4th hour or so of the touranment the mini glow sticks were really hurting in juice.  One thing that I liked between my team and the other team we were with was that they would put 2 glow sticks on theirs, and in many cases the colors were different.  It helped us figure out which disc belongs to each person without having to shine a light on it.

Number of discs - I put an LED on my primary driver and an LED on my secondary driver.  Then I had a glow on my putter (I figured that if the glow was weak I don't need my putter for long range anyway), my primary mid-range (only because I didn't have enough LED's), and a mini glow on my MINI.  Don't forget the mini.  I think for the next time I will probably buy some rope glow sticks (bracelet size) and try to outline the shape of the mini with the glow stick.  I think it would be a lot more effective.

Don't sell yourself short on the discs though.  When I got out there I realized that I wanted to throw a different disc on a particular hole, but I didn't want to take the time to change the tape to that disc.  Then I get up there and throw a really bad shot because I should have thrown something different.  Either get enough lights or just force yourself to take your time.  I would recommend that you never take off the LED or whatever light on the disc you use the most for driving so that the tape stays firmly on the disc and you don't have to worry about it popping off when you whack a tree (and believe me, you'll hit 'em)  Champion and Elite-Z discs are great to use and tape on top or bottom as the light will shine through to either side.  I did have a star disc flip over on me and I could still see it because I had the LED taped on it.  I doubt that would be the case for a glowstick.

Flashlights - definitely have one for your walk from basket to the next tee.  Try to limit your usage though because if you let your eyes get used to the dark you can see a LOT more.  A lot of the glow "purists" will say to never shine the light towards the basket to find routes, you'll just have to find it on your own.  I bought a really nice LED flashlight that was pretty expensive, but it is small (5-6") and gives a very bright white light.  That worked out great for getting from one place to the next.

If you properly attach your lights you'll quickly realize that you won't even need the flashlight to find your disc.  Just look for the light :)

The best thing to light up glow plastic discs is the mini-blacklight. The blacklight will charge them up quickly & brighlty, but you still won't be able to see it after about 1/2 of the flight. I didn't even bring mine Saturday as I was using the LED lights. I even put one on the underside of an ESP Wasp and could still see the light through it. Red is definetly the best.

Wouldn't mind doing some glow aroung the Downers Grove area sometime. If anyone is interested lets get together & get something going. (not at the Downers Grove 9, just to clarify)

I pulled out 5 of my least used discs from my bag & put Thills on the rest. Think I had 12 discs total lit up.

M00k had the glow bracelet inside a double stash mini & I thought it looked sweet.

Actually it was a single semi-see-through green Innova mini that worked really well with the green glow bracelet.

I have been playing glow for years and sad to say that I stay clear of anyone that is using a blacklight or any other light to glow a disc...  If you are not using a glowstick, you are going to be wasting everyones time on your card looking for your friggin discs..  If you got the sticks you can see your disc hundreds of feet away.  I have tried lots of stick and have settled on the green ones you break, you can get them for about 10.50 for a box of 50..   I use the clear duct tape and can move the stick between mutiple discs..  so I end up using about 4 sticks a night on about 7 discs.  Since I really only get out at night this time of year, I have even left the tape on some of the disc and reused it for a few weeks.

BTW  I buy sticks from http://www.extremeglow.com/  I buy about 20 boxes at a time for the fellas around here..  I have 3 extra if someone runs into me that needs one or 3.
Let us hope that the whores of evil no longer loiter on the doorsteps of your path beckoning you into the brothel of despair, and that here and after may present them with the most rigid manistfestation of a firm and manly will.

I do have about 25 LED's left (mostly red) if anyone is looking for some.
