Kelsey wanted everyone to know that she had the best time ever, which is what she says every tournament when she plays 900 rated disc golf!   -_-

I was wondering if there would be better plastic at the next event. I cashed this time and I had to save all my brass because nobody throws the discraft junk.  I want some Teerexs and Innova stuff.

What do you know?! All your brass just expired.   :P  For people whose brass has not expired, there is often a better selection on Saturday than Sunday.

well that sux for sunday players!!!  maybe if there was more Teerexes or innova hats and whatever other star discs are hot right now, more people could be happy.  alot of players i know from sunday did save their brass because they didn't see anythying they wanted.

Thank you Jon.  I didn't realize that Kelsey missed winning in the Pro Women's division by just one throw.

I had greatest time ever, too (I shot over my rating!)

Bruce-What division is Kira playing at TWC? I'm playing rec.

Quit work, play disc golf :)

I think Kira is going to play Rec unless there are juniors.

She plays up at IOS events because I'm paying her entry fee and telling her she's just as good as the women and girls in that division.  She's playing where her rating puts her in Texas because its a championship and she really can't keep up with the 780 and 790 rated women.

You played well in Kenosha Becky.  You came within one putt of an 800 round.

I was fascinated by the wide difference in the morning and afternoon rounds.  Yes, the morning round was tough.  Scores were high.  However, it didn't seem that the afternoon round was so signficantly easier.  The ratings seem to indicate a big disparity in the rounds.  The compression was 8 points/stroke in the morning and 11 in the afternoon.  This meant that players who basically shot the same rating shot very different scores and the difference was more pronounced with the lower rated players:

11 Tony Smith       72   904    61    907      9
19 Kevin Harkin 25184    830    77    863    65    864      12
30 Heath Hunziker 28853    80    838    67    842      13
48 Paul Ludwikowski       92    739    76    744      16
2 Nathan Loper 29770       107   614    87    624      20

Tony basically shot the same both rounds with 9 strokes differing.  By the time we got down to Nathan the difference was 20 strokes.  It would have been closer to 19 strokes to have the same rating for him.  SSA seems to be about 8 to 8 1/2 strokes apart for the two rounds.  Although strokes were much higher in the first round, it seems the variance between the top and the bottom was roughly the same-- 35-40 strokes.  I am not sure why the compression is so much different in the two rounds.

This seemed to effect players in the lower half pretty much.  I was awful in the first round but felt that I was much better in the afternoon, even considering for the easier course.  Yet, the ratings for the two rounds weren't significantly different notwithstanding a 19 stroke improvement.  Interesting.

Without getting into details that I don't fully understand I can tell you there were a couple of significant factors going on out there. There was a bit of flip flopping and place changing between morning and afternoon rounds. More than I normally see at our events. The morning round favored players who threw well in the wind and could play safe and limit their bogeys. The shorter and less windy second round favored players who could get the deuces off the short tees. Not a lot of players playing on Sunday had equal skills for the conditions of both rounds. So we had quite a few people jumping up a couple of cards as well as people dropping a couple of cards.

I think the weather Sun morning was worse than anything all day Sat; my biggest problem Sat, as usual, was brain function... maybe it was the extra practice on Saturday, but I felt that there was no other reason I couldn't have shot the same +6 either round Sat that I shot Sun morning. Still, I got killed on the open holes where we finished Sunday, when the wind might have been at its worst - I was actually at par before #4, and then I finished on #8 with a 6, where there seemed to be no earthly way to get anywhere near the mound, let alone putt from there.

I was counting on that - I can usually get 5-8 down from the short tees, but I only got 1 measly birdie in the woods (whiffed on another) so my chances were over. Still, the fact that I could play at all after my misadventures on Saturday was a relief.

So 2 guys from the 2nd card passed me. Looking for a golf lobotomist....  ::) On Saturday, euthanasia was more in order.  :'(

Oh, and a big salute again to Adrian Jr.! He got trapped in the trees on our 2nd hole with a 5 or 6 and a lesser player might have completely melted down. But he came back big time the rest of the way, and except for that and a possibly overoptimistic putt on #8 (nice comeback though) he outshot everyone.
thanks,
Damon

Thats strange.  I shot exactly 19 strokes better my second round, and the rating was almost 100 points higher.  I fell apart the first round, my head wasnt there at all.

A shorter, easier course will always have a wider spread than a tougher course.  If you take two players like Barry Schultz and Kelsey Brakel, at 10 ratings points per throw he would have to beat her by a stroke a hole to maintain his rating.  On a long course he probably will because he can throw so much farther.  If you put them both on short tees on a technical course, Kelsey might get four or five birdies but Barry can't get four or five aces to make up for that.  So the ratings points per stroke slope has to make up for it.

The morning conditions were tougher, but not so tough as to invalidate ratings, just tough enough to give players with a good wind game the advantage they'd earned by going outside and playing on windy days.  Kelsey and I have been playing a lot on windy days intentionally.  She's been learning some things.  I'm not as teachable.

I don't know a whole lot about anything and I kinda stink at this sport so take this for what it's worth.  I heard this kind of bashing all day.  If I listened to everyone, I guess that Innova, Discraft, and Gateway all suck and no one makes a good disc.  ALL THREE COMPANIES MAKE SOME GOOD AND SOME BAD DISCS.  We all have our preferences.  Discraft was a major sponsor of this tournament and I want to say thanks.  They make some really good discs (see Brett's Wasp, Dan's Buzz, most of Bruce's bag, and many peoples beloved bangers).  I doubt you've thrown any of Discraft's discs more than a few times so please reserve your negative remarks for people who aren't giving us money to support our habit.  Then go throw what you want.  Anyway, it's the thrower, not the disc IMHO.  If my shot sucked the big one (which many did that day  :-\), I wasn't blaming my disc.

And while I'm chiming in...Yes Neal is a bagger  ;D.
That kid is back on the escalator!!!

I think my first round got into my head during the second & I carded my first Snowman on hole #8. Stupid of me to go for the par putt vs. laying up, & the wind made me pay when coming back. My 2nd round was 50 points < my rating, GACK! I can't wait to play some tournaments on courses I've played more than 4 times, but that's no excuse.  :cwm10:

If it makes you feel any better, 3 out of the four rounds I played at Bowling green were more than 50 points below my rating.  And Ive played those courses a lot more than 4 times.

I'm not sure if ur going by the ratings on the PDGA Tour page for Bowling Green, but if you are then those ratings aren't much more than random numbers right now.

Right now they are calculated assuming everybody played the same course each round, which we obviously did not.  They will change drastically once the real ratings come out.
