Rick Rothstein, our friendly sponsor at Disc Golf World, is strongly urging us to to an ICE BOWL.

Without knowing any specifics (dates, $$$, format, etc.), would you like DISContinuum to host an Ice Bowl in January?

Also, would YOU participate in our Ice Bowl?

Why and/or why not?

mirth

Hmm.... I may be interested in playing in an Ice Bowl... If course, I was thinking of playing at Dretzka, but if we're going to have one at Bevier I'd play that instead.

Who is the charity we'd be benefitting?

This is gonna be awesome!!!

Curious Jon... How does your cart work in the snow? Bevier can get some deep (2-3') drifts...

I believe, but am not 100% sure, that ribbon taped to the underside of a disc is PDGA approved for winter golf.

mirth

Okay, maybe not PDGA approved, but certainly the preferred method for ease of search when its snowy out...

mirth

I hope I get many exceptions.... ;)

that's silly. How will we be enforcing this rule? I can see it possible getting bent/broken by non-locals. Obviously, same-group policing will need to happen, but what occurs if/when a group takes a person's third drive? Stroke? With/without warning? Subsequent violations?

mirth

The grass tees should be alright. A little muddy, perhaps, but nothing too terrible.

mirth

Not too badly, turnout was smaller than we hoped but still broke even plus a little....

Results are Here.

Which charity? Open to suggestions.

I suggested to Rick (after being challenged by Joe Weinshel at the "Steady") that we simply put our efforts into supporting Dretzka's Ice Bowl.  He called me a wimp and said we should just do it, even if it only raises $50 for a local charity.

To me, we would be able to generate more money for a charity if we participated in Dretzka's (we wouldn't have to buy prizes, advertise, discs, etc.).

But, I want to know how y'all feel aboot it.....

Jon - That's an offer that's hard to refuse! The best day for us to do it would be Sunday Feb 2nd, an hour or two after best shot.  I'd see if we can get the fieldhouse at Bevier for shelter & warmth.

If this is a go, I would have no problem combining your mulligan/fundraiser idea with this. I envision us registering the event with Rick at DGW (main Ice Bowl organizer), but not necessarily buying IB discs and/or shirts.  Maybe minis, but I would love to keep this event SIMPLE. I have a couple of charities in mind (PADS shelter or A Safe Place Shelter for Women). Also wouldn't mind seeing the club take a SMALL percentage from this event (5%), but that is not a must.

I just got this email from Uncle Joe Weinshel up in Milwaukee:

Real Ice Bowl

Coming to Milwaukee on January 18 & 19 2003.

Please disregard full page ad in DGWN. It's full of typos. For convenience you can register with credit card Make your plans early!

Now open 24 hrs - Uncle Joe's Plastic Shop & Co-op

IF we have our Ice Bowl, and we have it on Feb 2nd, folks could attend both.

jim

Winter Best Shot starts January 5th at 10:30am.  We could hold the IB tourney at 2pm after leagues; or we could hold it another day; I'd rather not move Best Shot League back a week. Holding it in February might be better for weather, would give us time to organize, and would have fewer conflicts with other Ice Bowl action.

The idea of doubles sounds good. If we do Pro/Am teams, I think more Ams would be willing to brave the cold. It would also lower the # of prizes we'd have to dole out (top 3 teams total instead of top teams in Pro & top teams in Ams).

Perhaps a slice of the entry can go toward the charity....

Perhaps a slice of the entry fee can pay for prizes....

Perhaps the Mulligan $$ can go toward the basket fund....   :-)

This morning, Rick at DGW hinted (vaguely via email) that having an Ice Bowl would help get us a basket from him.  Heck, he's got to promote biz too.

I've been thinking about all this and I don't mind accommodating him with an Ice Bowl. I think it would be fun and good for the club on many levels:

-community involvement with charity

-WPD publicity

-publicity via Ice Bowl stats

-makes sponsor happy (happy sponsors donate more)

-demonstrates insane commitment (or cold-blooded nature) on part of all participants

Also, I would be very comfortable letting Jon Brakel being our Ice Bowl TD. Would anyone have an objections or better suggestions?

jim

Ice Bowl Ideas:

-Obtain building (field house) at Bevier for the event.

-Have hot chocolate and chili available (good cold-weather food - my wife's is EXCELLENT)

-Indoor mini-toss contest

-If we do a bring your own partner doubles, invite (read "taunt") the Milwaukee "Real Deal Ice Bowl" folks to play Bevier's Ice Bowl.

jim

REVISED:

Consumption of alcohol is officially not allowed at Bevier Park.

jim

Based on many positive responses to the idea (via this Board, emails, and phone calls), I'd like to move forward with our first winter tourney.

DISContinuum's First Annual Ice Bowl (the "Fun One") will be held at Bevier Park on Saturday, February 1st!

Come on out - have some fun - help feed the hungry!

27 Holes!  Free hot chocolate!  Great prizes!

Jon Brakel is the Ice Bowl Tournament Director and he has some fun surprises in store for all players!

Mark your calendars NOW!

Specific info about format, prizes and players' packages to come soon.......

jim

I plan on rivetting mine on.......

jim

Seriously, though . . . .

After some research, I propose that the charity which the Ice Bowl would benefit is PADS.  Public Action To Deliver Shelter. There are several PADS organizations throughout the States, most being in northern Illinois.

PADS is non-profit organization which offers shelter, food, job placement assitance, and more to homeless individuals in need.  The majority of donations are usually clothing and food, but they throw out over 30% of food which is donated to them because it is expired, rotten, or dairy products. They request that we help out with:

-canned vegetables

-canned fruit

-canned juice

-coffee

-boxed (instant) potatoes

-please no more pasta or rice (overstocked)

-paper plates & utensils

or

we just combine monetary donations and get one gift certificate for a grocery store.  Of course, people naturally will be donating food as well, so we can do both.

PADS has helped MANY MANY people, including some of my own family members.  It is a strong organization with true committment to helping local people in trouble.

Any comments or other sugestions?

jim

Jon, scorecards are done, complete with Mulligan tally columns. Doubles teams will share a card, to keep things simple.  Do you need a copy of the logo, or did you grab it from the Ice Bowl PDF form?

jim

Leaderboard and blank cards are ready and waiting....
