Kelsey and I once played this tournament in a foot of fresh and very light new snow.  The snow was so powdery, the disc wouldn't leave much of a cut mark.  She caddied for me on my day and I caddied for her on her day.  By caddying for each other we did not lose any discs, because the caddies mostly stayed forward spotting on every throw.

Also, bring a plastic sled and pull your discs.  It is so much easier, and there are a couple of places where you can ride the sled to the next hole.

Coldbrook has a lot of pine trees so I think the actual amount of snow on the ground on the more wooded holes will be much less than the holes in the open. A spotter is definitely a good thing to have and will save a lot of headache. Playing on Sunday will be nice though because a lot of the common areas will be packed down pretty well by then so not as much of an opportunity for a lost disc.

I think you are confusing Coldbrook with Oshtemo.  Or maybe Kimbal Pines.  There is a stand of pines between holes 1 and 2, but not a lot after that.

If ten inches fell, it will be on the ground.  With this cold weather, more is likely to fall over the next two weeks.  Kalamazoo gets a lot of lake effect snow.  We're getting flurries every day here, remnants of the lake effect snow that dumps on the west side of the state.

Did Larry get permission for the use of ribbons this year?

Hmmm maybe I am not remembering things as I thought. The course I played Sunday morning (after all the snow) was Oshtemo and in the areas with pines and thicker tree cover, there was not as much snow. I didn't end up playing Coldbrook so I was just guessing. Kimball Pines could definitely be interesting with all that snow. I played there on Saturday before snow was an issue.

I'll have to find out about the ribbons. I have not heard anything yet.

Just wanted to Bump this thread since the tourney is this weekend.  I also wanted to extend a hearty good luck to all the IL players (and MI transplants) playing on Sun.  I'm playing Sat. in INT. let's see IL run the table and take all the divisions we're in.  Has anyone heard anything about strings on the discs?  I don't think I am going to use them anyway but I was wondering in case I change my mind.

I have not heard anything about them being allowed which would probably mean they are not. The TD would have to have gotten it approved beforehand as well.

Best of luck on Saturday! I saw your name on the list. Let me know if you have any questions before you leave on where to go while in Kalamazoo.

Thanks, I'm staying with my sister who goes to Grand Valley State in GR so I'll be goin back and forth sat.  Any hints or tips for Coldbrook since I've never played it before? it sounds like there are some "star wars" holes like at New Lenox, tight woods with more luck then actual skill to get through.

Stand and deliver.  No run up.  Keep your eye on your target window.  That's what I did when I won Advanced there in 2004.  On the longer open holes, do whatever.  In the woods it is more important to miss the first few trees and hit your window than it is to get max power.

Oh btw, the teepads are going to be shoveled as part of a sponsorship package, so you have that to look forward to. I know I am!

definitely happy to hear that, what kind of clothing is everyone wearing? I'm trying to decide if I should go with big bulky snowpants or just flexible layers, any more info on snowfall? amounts?

I found a wonderful combination with long underwear and fleece-lined blue jeans (carpenter).  I used the combo playing in negative temperatures at streamwood.  My legs were never cold, and I never had a problem with movement.  $20 for the blue jeans at WalMart.  I didn't layer enough up top (even with heavy coat on and two shirts), and my stomach (keep in mind I'm very round - to put it nicely) got really cold... got some frostbite burns there.

The fleece pants are also boot-cut so that they can go over some winter boots.  I don't know how much snow you're working with though, so I don't know if you'll have stuff seeping in up past the boot tops.

The report from Tuesday was that Coldbrook had 6-8" with some 2 foot drifts in some places so make sure not to throw at drifts! Talking to a buddy right now a little more came down last night but nothing substantial. It will probably snow both nights this weekend also, but nothing major is predicted I do not think.

As for clothing, the times that I have played in deep snow this year, the key for me was to have waterproof shoes/boots. Even if they aren't really tall boots, at least make sure they are waterproof. I wear some Timberland hiking ankle high shoes (basically like hightops) and a big pair of waterproof socks that go halfway up to my knee. Along with 2 pairs of socks underneath, that keeps my feet warm and most importantly, dry. I usually go with a layer of sweatpants and a layer of jeans, but I may add another layer to the mix this weekend. As for the top layer, I normally go with a t-shirt > long sleeve t-shirt > sweatshirt > hooded sweatshirt > fleece on top to try and compress it down. That keeps me plenty warm and I usually drop the hoodie halfway through. I would recommend grabbing a ski mask or a scarf to cover your face, if only for in between drives. That is probably the one thing most people will not think about and it won't be a good thing the next day.

Good advice.

This thread explored winter wear about a year ago.

Merch should be very profitable as there ought to be a boatload of lost discs this weekend.  Have fun.

Muffs are overrated. A good beard (by crackey) is all you need. Don't forget to bring a flask filled with your favorite adult beverage: It's like a sweater for your insides.

My personal favorite winter disc golf fashion statement has to be the plastic-bags-instead-of-gore-tex-socks look. Classic!

The process of alcohol digestion makes your skin feel warmer but actually reduces your core temperature. If you want to keep your core temp up lay off the alcoholic bevies until you can enjoy one next to a warm fire.

well, it was a great tourney,  great course for seeing it the first time ever, can't wait to play it again under warmer conditions.  Had a bad 1st round but was able to recover second round to take 9th overall, not a win for IL but in the top ten!!!  Saw Terry miller (I think it was him) ace a hole when he was playing a casual round of doubles.  that was pretty cool.  The Bells Porter was great with the homemade chili!!!!  on another good note, I did not lose a disc!!!!

Congrats on your top ten finish! I was glad too that I did not lose a disc. I came very close a few times though as I was getting very odd kicks. I did not play as well as hoped and my 3 and 4 up landed me in a big tie for 12th place. How did everyone else do that went?

I did terrible, I know Terry took 2nd in Open.

Overall, it was a fun day despite shooting so horrible.  For those not in attendance, Geoff Bennett took home another first place win with a -6 and -7.  I'm not sure what Terry shot, but he was hot on Bennett's heals, reportedly up by 5 on him at one point (this coming from Geoff).  Brent Koontz, an up and coming rookie from Fort Wayne, IN was in a tie for 3rd.

In advanced, the tournament came down to a playoff between Ziggy "bagger" Bierekoven and Jason Kirkaldy.  Ziggy won the playoff and secured his fourth consecutive sanctioned advanced victory.  Shouts of "bagger" and "move up" roared through the pavilion.  But you can't really get on a 14 year old to move up to open.  He should be someone to watch over the next 5 years as a rising star.

Mark Ellis had a come from behind victory in the small Grandmasters field with a -1 on his second round, defeating Leonard Johnson, who was the first round leader.

I believe in Open you cashed if you were under par for the day.  The conditions were rough, my guess is SSA was -3.

I know there was a few discontinuum guys there on sunday, but tags were not discussed. Are tags still in play if no one collects them before the rounds? Can it be worked out once scores are posted? Because I've been looking forward to dumping my #55.
