An 18 hole course is going in on Kane County Forest Preserve District property along the Fox River just north of Blackhawk Forest Preserve.  That's all the detail I have at the moment.

Sweeeeeeeet!!  That's about 3 or 4 miles from my house!  The area has thick woods and a little elevation.  18 holes may be tight, but that's some good land.

I think there are plans for an extension of Stearns road over the Fox River very near that location, so (someday) it'll be easy to get there for everyone.

Sounds like I'm about to get a new home course.  Hm, I wonder who will be hosting "leagues at South Elgin?"

I was talking to a Forest Preserve District guy, Bob Quinlan, about submitting a proposal for a course at Campton Forest Preserve and he mentioned the South Elgin course.  I got the impression that it was going in this spring, but like I said above, I really don't have any further details.  Sorry.

Evidently the Village of South Elgin has licensed the northern section of the Jon Duerr Forest Preserve from the Kane County Forest Preserve District for the purpose of building this course.  The KCFPD likes this type of arrangement so they are indemnified.  I'll try to get more info from South Elgin sometime next week.  It seems that Forest Preserve Districts are reluctant to tackle disc golf thinking it more appropriate for parks and recreation districts.

I just spoke to the South Elgin superintendent of parks.  She was very interested in my offer to help with the design & installation of the new course and said she would show me the proposed layout.  The current plans are for a nine-hole course running between three different parks.  Once I see the plans and take a look at the property, I'll be able to post more.

The budget won't be finalized and approved until April, so late spring looks like the earliest date this would be completed.

Nice!  I used to live right by that forest preserve and walked my dog there all the time.  It's probably going to be in the area northwest of the trolley parking lot, I think it was an old gravel quarry at one time that is surrounded by a road that you can't drive on anymore.  There is a high ridge of trees and forest, and in the middle is prairie grass and shrubs, plenty of poison ivy as well.  There are a ton of possibilities there to design an incredible course.

I walked through the course with the parks superintendent last night & we finalized the layout.  The holes are okay considering the space we had to use, but the flow is going to cause some complaints.  There are two distinct parts to this 9-hole course, with about two-plus blocks between.

There are plenty of trees throughout, and a small creek on a few holes.  The river doesn't come into play in order to avoid any conflicts with the numerous peolple fishing there.  Slight elevation and a fast green or two.

The tees will be grass, marked with stones in the ground & maps/scorecards should be available at the village hall and on the course.  No plans for signs right now.  Baskets may be installed as early as July.

This course will be in the ground for only a few years as they are planning to re-develop this land, so we'll be looking for a re-location site somewhere in South Elgin in the the future.

^^^^ That is good news, I've always thought that place would be good for a course.  So tjdub, what area specifically will the course be on?   Will it mainly be around the bike trail and field near the entrance?  Will the area around the old road going around the preserve come into play?  Just curious.  Seems weird they will take it out permamently after the redevelopment, couldn't the course be a part of the "redevelopment"?  Anyhow, I'm psyched to play it.  Hopefully it will be in by the Blottopia fest at the end of July, plenty of hippies camped at vasa park will give the course plenty of use that weekend.  I'll be there!

The new South Elgin course will be at the river crossing at State Street, about 2 miles south of US 20.  It is in the city parks (Seba Park will probably be the official location) next to the river and not in the wooded forest preserve south of the tolley museum.  The course winds through three parks with a big gap between holes 5 & 6.  It is not in the thick forest preserve area like we previously speculated, so no woods, no prairie.  The northern border to the north section is Stone Street and the southern border of the south section is the trolley museum & baseball diamonds.

They were never willing to up their budget from the original 9 holes, so that's all we'll get.

1, 2, & 3 are the same.  They eliminated the two running next to the playground.  We didn't finalized 4, & 5 will be across the vacant lot between the two southern parks.

6-9 are redesigned, with 6 starting at the end of the parking lot near the river and going to the elevated pin in the middle of the park.  7 is a left to right hugging the elevated driveway on the river, 8 is a long straight shot throough a tight gap off an elevated tee, & 9 is a short left to right into a tight grove of tall trees.

That was the design we worked out on Tuesday night, I'm not sure if the parks superintendent will change anything.

Anyone interested in touring the course before baskets are installed, send me a PM & we'll set up a time.

Hey guys wondering if this course is open yet? Very pumped for the new course!

tjdub42

The baskets were ordered about two weeks ago & should be delivered to the parks department by next week.  The parks superintendent estimated installation "probably after the fourth of July."  I'll contact him on 7/5 to ask for an update.

5 of the 9 sleeves have been installed, & I assume the other 4 will be installed on Monday.  I don't know yet when the baskets will be put in and the tees marked.  I'll try to find out next week.
