after reading the article you can tell the guy who wrote it (jeff bonato) knows nothing about disc golf, but its good exposure to the sport in this area

I wouldn't exactly call that 'good exposure', he pretty much goes out of his way to discourage anyone not already familiar with disc golf to try playing while whining about having to complete his assignment...

oh you guys are smart, using a rube to keep the numbers down on your favorite courses!

wow!  i can't believe this story is printed!  it appears to have been written by a 12 year old.  after playing 1 time by himself, he is saying 'don't play disc golf because its too hard'.  and even though he admits the game is too hard, he is saying its not a 'sport' for whatever reason.  something tells me this guy has never been good at any sport in his entire life going back to when he was always picked last in dodgeball.

my favorite part though is when he breaks down the forehand and backhand shots  :)  ha!  wat an idiot!

yeah, I read it tonight & barely could keep myself from getting angry at it.

at least the club invitational's mentioned in there... did he talk to brett?

also, according to dufus, bevier only has 4 baskets with three tees per basket.

He did not talk to me.

I did google for his e-mail & sent him this.

Jeff,

I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience playing disc golf for the
first time.

I agree with your article that our area courses can be hard to
navigate however they are some of the most beginner friendly courses
in the Midwest. Our courses are overcrowded with players while many
areas of the country are empty.

I am a bit disappointed with the negativity of your article. Our club
spends hundreds of hours promoting the positives of disc golf and
this is not the true image of what disc golf is all about.

Though your article said it would never be called a sport, this is one
of the fastest growing recreational activities in the country. I
think you would be very surprised how many ex-athletes compete in
disc golf. The top players in the world can do throw a disc like you
would never imagine.

I wanted to correct a statement in your article. Almost all
competitive players throw backhand, not sidearm. Once mastered this
throw is much easier to control than a sidearm throw.  Check
www.discgolftv.com for some good disc golf action.

There are 2 courses in the Chicagoland area that allow the use of golf
carts. They are designed on regular golf courses and are called Fly 18
disc golf. Here is a link-> http://www.fly18.com/whatis.html

I would like to invite to one of the biggest amateur tournaments of
the year. Here is the information. http://www.2007amworlds.com/
There will be nearly 600 competitors competing from all over the world.
Spend a day or 2 at this event and you will see what disc golf is all
about. Though the top professionals will not be playing this event,
you can see some of the best amateur players. If you are interested,
let me know. I will be at the event all week.

lol, i just had to laugh while reading that.  That was just bad up and down the entire thing.  It's called "I don't want to be out here doing this, I don't want to learn how to play, and I certainly am not going to let myself have any fun while I'm here."  Can anyone take a golf club and ball, walk up to a tee and hit it perfect?  I don't think so.  I don't know what in the world his expectations were, but to only play 3 holes and then give up because he can't figure out which direction he should throw (and not pay attention to where his shot went) should not constitute enough information to write an article about disc golf.

Really bizarre article.

I knew from the posts that it was gonna be a tough read, but it was like a kid's first crayon-written book report. How did this guy get a job as a writer?

The idea of anyone playing all the courses in one day -- they range from Deerfield to Highland Park to Libertyville, to Waukegan, to Gurnee, to Round Lake to Grayslake to Mundelein -- is funny. Impossible ... but funny.

this can be done in a day

arent all these 9 holes except round lake ?

True...but...

I usually just look down while I play.  I learned a long time ago that I don't really want to know what goes on at disc golf courses.  Anyway, after I was done being infuriated by this article it made me think.  I hung around a little after I threw and watched people play.  I didn't see anybody who looked like they were old enough to have graduated from college throwing backhand off the tee.  Not one.  All forehand and tommys.  I watched about 30 kids tee off before I just shook my head and walked off.   So, I'll give the moron that one.  If all he watched were kids, that is what he would see.

Otherwise, what a tool.

Let's give it up for the Illinois State Coordinator!  Nice email Brett.  Definately more PC than I would have been but you are the man fighting for us :brave:
