I received my new 2008 information from Gateway yesterday, and they sent out to all of their vendors one of the new Assassin discs.  According to David McCormack:

QuoteThe flight is like a cross betwen a CE leopard and a pro line tee bird. It has a great feel in the hand and they are very controllable with a looooong glide.

I believe I have a shipment of 50 arriving next week, so I'll have them with me at the Ice Bowl.  I don't believe these are PDGA approved just yet, but the Ice Bowl isn't sanctioned either ;).  Cash price should be $11.

So far the reports that I'm hearing are that it is very straight and can also be used as an excellent roller disc because it has a blunter edge.

The disc itself is a small lip, just like a leopard or teebird like David said.  The outer portion of the rim and underneath on the wing/lip, the disc is scored similarly to the Inferno.  It makes me wonder if Quest is actually producing the mold.  It's the same plastic feel as the Diablo-DT for those who have thrown that.

To me this feels like the fairway driver version of the Inferno - yet at the same time it's not as domey and thin on the flight plate as the inferno so it won't flip over quite as easy.

This might be the disc for Dan to replace the "hole penetrator" from the Innova Cicada thread, an assassin should be just as sneaky   ;D

My hole penetrator snuck in the back door and picked me up a deuce.

I gave my Hole Penetrator a good firm stroke and it shot off like a cannon.

Watch out for overpressure there buddy   :o

Back on topic, the disc sounds pretty sweet, but it's just too cold for me to be playing, maybe when it warms up this weekend

The Birdie Bag is very useful when hands get sticky.  :sign19: :sign17: :sign19: I also know that Dan got one in his player's pack at the Homie.

The Assassin is now a PDGA-approved disc.  Justin is supposed to ship out my stuff tomorrow from St. Louis, and I normally receive that stuff the next day.  It should be with me at the Ice Bowl!

Along with my shipment they are supposedly going to include a sample of their next new Putter - the Magic.  It's due out at the beginning of February!

Sweet! I've been looking for a "Magic" putter for years..... :icon_thumright:

I wonder if the Magic will come in the ever-changing E-Firm-Medium-Soft-Chalky-Super Soft-Eraser-Super Stupid Soft plastic varieties that the Wizard & Warlock come in?

And to think I used to find Rocs confusing!

stpitner

Yes, the Magic will come in multiple flexibilities.

One thing to note - the Firm discs will no longer be made.  They are essentially now the mediums.  The flexibility as of late has been fairly consistent to differentiate between Medium, Soft, Super Soft, and Super Stupid Soft.  That's the core 4.  Then what Gateway runs are variations with what is like different types of test scenarios - the result is stuff like the chalky discs, eraser discs, and stuff like that.  Those are usually just the specialty runs.  It did take me a little bit to figure all of this out, but once you recognize the core flexibilities, it makes more sense.

I think the Magic is slightly less stable than the Warlock, and I know there are plans for more putters than this as well.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see :)

Vibram Disc Golf, Ledgestone Insurance, Paragon and Whirld Sports are all cool. Real cool.

I've only sold one so far, and my proto I've thrown twice.  It seems to be like it will be a nice straight to turnover disc.  It's a little tough to tell obviously on only 2 throws.  It definitely looks like it could be a promising roller, but I'm not very good at throwing rollers.  I haven't thrown a CE Leopard to compare, but from just limited throwing a regular champ Leopard I could see the comparisons.  I think the Assassin rim is a little wider.

A friend of mine who lives in St. Louis talked to Dave about the Assassin...his take was that Dave thought there were too many new players throwing a putter and drivers with 2 cm rims and nothing in-between.  He was going on the theory that all they want to throw is the newest drivers, so he brought out a driver circa 2000 to kind-of trick the new players into throwing a disc more like an Eagle or Leopard.  If you already throw a disc like an Eagle or a Leopard, there is really nothing new to see here other than the glide.  I guess the Assassin has that same rough surface on the wing like an Inferno or Diablo and is supposed to make it glide better for weenie-arms, potentially making it a longer disc for guys with slow arm speed.  Time will tell.

After the Magic, they are going to try yet another putter.  The Voodoo.  Why not?  Putters and satanic references seem to be working for them.

stpitner

aw man, they are going to go with the name Voodoo?  Dave jokingly told me that they were probably going to stick along the lines of that type of naming conventions and also jokingly/semi-seriously just tossed out names like Voodoo, Shaman, and I can't remember what else are potential names.

Yeah, the Assassin has the scuffs on the rim similar to the Inferno, although the scored stuff on the disc felt slicker than the smooth surface, go figure.  The natural place for me to have my thum is where the area is smooth, so it works out for me anyway.

i tested this disc and this is what i thought....

when you throw it hard it turns quickly but fades a little at the end. It will go the 405 ft that the stamp says it will. I would also work as a 260' lazy hyzer disc... I am thinking #18 at madision meadows...Its pretty flippy if you have any kind of snap....but it is controlable and grippy...
i would tell discraft guys its like an XL and Innova guys its like a TL but maybe a little more glide. if you hyzer it alot i makes a nice straight forehand line but harder to control...

Probably going to start throwing this disc exclusivly and assassinate alot of baskets off the tee
