Under enhanced penalties passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich last year, first-time work zone speeders, including those caught on camera, will be hit with a fine of $375, with $125 of that sum going to pay off-duty State Troopers to provide added enforcement in construction or maintenance zones. Two-time offenders are subject to a $1,000 fine, including a $250 surcharge to hire Troopers, and the loss of their license for 90 days.

Yeah, I saw that as well, even if it WAS released earlier, I figured people coming in for Lombard from out of state might like to know this

This is only a problem on the weekends.  During the week it is impossible to speed in construction zones. It is impossible to get within 30mph of the speed limit.  I would be thrilled to get through the #$& construction zones anywhere close to the speed limit during the week.  I was recently flying through such a zone at about 8 mph when I saw a sign reminding me that the limit was 45.  I got to laugh about that sign for the next half hour...until I had driven two miles to the exit.  Hey, there are only two seasons and the glass is half full.  Winter is mercifully over.  To paraphrase the admonishment about speeding in such zones, "give them me a break."

I was sitting still on 88 for a minute or so last week when a guy comes walking over to the Jersey barrier and puts up his "SLOW" sign. I'm sure they just had him do that because they thought it was funny.

West bound 88 in the morning is sometimes brutal...glad I only have to take it for a few miles. East bound in the evening is fine. No backups at all. I find that it's not safe to drive 45. I usually drive 55 in the right lane and still sometimes I feel like I'm a traffic hazzard.
