It's going to be an interesting season as the Sox try to cut payroll
but still compete.

They are resting hopes on the youths (did you say yewts ?) this year.

Owens last chance to show what he has got and Brian Anderson should get long looks.

The Sox will be going super young after this year once Dye, Thome , and Konerko plod off into
the sunset.

The pitching staff will again depend on young guns to fill void of Javy and Contraras is due back late May.

The Sox will beat the Cubs in game seven at the Cell in the World Series in Oct of 2009.

Go White Sox !

Mirth, can we have this thread deleted as I think people find the subject matter both offensive and unnecessary?   ::)

Do you want to know why the Hawks game wasn't played at the Cell?  Because people generally don't like it there as well.  2008 attendance figures:  Wrigley averaged 40,743 which filled 99.1% of the seats.  U.S. Cellular averaged 30,877 which filled 76.0% of the seats.  See, even the White Sox fans themselves don't want to be there.  Thats why you have to cut payroll and pray your farm system can produce to give you a glimmer of hope this year.  Good luck!

Well the attendance thing is because South side fans actually work for a living; unlike those North side Irish;  (Michael Fiztpatrick and Patrick fits Michael...)

Always comes down to attendance doesn't it? Wrigley Field is a tourist destination, people come from out of town and go there. US Cellular not so much. The ball park is actually better, the food is better, it's easier to get there, and you can park there.

The Hawks played in Wrigley because McDunough? formerly worked for the Cubs, and it's a "shrine" plus they could play off the whole ivy thing too. It had nothing to with people not wanting to go to the Cell. If you've ever been there, you'd know it's better in every way over Wrigley except for the history of being so old.

It appears that the pain has healed from the most recent postseason debacle and Cubs and Sox fans can get back to the annual pastime of bashing one and other.

OK, now that we have all that out of the way, pitchers and catchers report to camp in about five weeks. That's what has me, and all baseball fans, north and south, excited.  At that time we can all talk about blown....saves by pitchers on the other team. Speaking of sucking (hey I didn't bring up the topic) it looks like once again neither team should suck this year.  Better?  Not so sure.  In any case, it should be a good competitive season and provide lots of fodder for the message board and the water cooler.

Unfortunately I think the Cubs should have the better team, but that's on paper, and games aren't played on paper. The Sox have many more question marks, including 2 in the rotation, plus they don't have a 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman or CFer, or a leadoff hitter. If everything plays out, it will be Getz/Lillibridge, Fields, and Anderson. I think if Lillibridge wins the starting job, he's probably leadoff, and if he doesn't, Owens probably gets a shot. I don't think Owens should even make the team, but Ozzie loves him. Anderson is by far the best defensive OFer on the team, but they have 3-4 question marks in the lineup, they probably won't put up with him if he doesn't hit, unlike they could have done a couple of years ago. I give the 3rd basemans job to Fields because Viciedo is a total question mark. It would probably be better for him to start at AAA, but he could possibly step in and do what Alexei did, but Ramirez is also 6-7 years older than Viciedo, so who knows.

As for the rotation, they have 2 spots for 2-4 guys. I don't know if any of them are capable, but I like what I've seen in limited time from Richard and Broadway, but I don't think Broadway will be given a shot. They also have Marquez who they got for Swisher, but I haven't heard much about him, and there's also Poreda, but he's probably another year away.

I don't feel that good coming into this year, but the team potentially does have a lot of upside. On the other side, if they do completely suck, and Beckham is lights out, they could give him a shot to get him ready to MLB pitching.

There is still a lot of time before the start of the season, so there could still be more moves made, and I'd like to see another pitcher brought in. I would have liked Penny, but Lowe is still out there although he wants too much money I'd think. There is also Garland, who wouldn't be a bad 4, but he's really only had 1 good year. I think they might be set in the field though especially with 3 guys fighting for 3rd base, and 4 guys for 2nd. I would like a leadoff hitter, but I don't see many if any left available.

Ha!, I'll grant you that one deucemeister.  I myself enjoyed delivering a power load to your (fill in the blank with your mom, sister, etc..) face.

So what you guys are saying is that the Cell is better in every way except for the way that makes people actually want to go there.  Fantastic!

Colon is insurance for sure til and if Contraras returns.

He might push the rookies a little bit and show Danks and Floyd a thing or two.

Looks like the economy has hit base ball also.

No takers for Crede or Garland yet.

The White Sox will again win the Central.

I think Colon is good insurance to keep Budweiser in business. That might be all he has left in him.  (LOL)

Colon pitched well last year when healthy, but that was the key, he has to stay healthy. If he can get 10-15 starts, and do well, that would be a pretty good addition. At least when the Sox are counting on pitchers to stay healthy, it's the 5th guy in the rotation, unlike when the Cubs did it, it was their #1 and #2
