Disc golfers. Here is your chance to get some payback. Suzi Schmidt and a few others headed the opposition of having a disc golf course installed in the Lake County Forest Preserve. I saw her name on a car today and had to check it out. Here is a link http://www.suzischmidt.com/   Please do not vote for her!

It's not just her but the entire Forest Preserve board.  The last time they actually discussed the issue, none of the members voted for opening any of the land to anything but forest preserve usage such as walking, picnicking, and biking.. How do I know this?   My dad served on the Lake County Board and Forest Preserve for many years and we discussed this many times before.

Remember my little "tiff" about people smoking weed on courses?   Well, the general belief with people in politics is that disc golfers are a minority voting group that are a bunch of swearing pot smokers.

It would really be great that you did not bring up illegal drugs everytime a discussion comes up regarding new courses.  The vast majority of people who play disc golf do not do illegal drugs. Are you intentionally trying to hurt the cause? I don't quite understand what you are trying to accomplish. If you are against disc golf fine, but if you are for disc golf, please use a little common sense.

CEValkyrie

When I was attending meetings at the LCFPD about the disc golf course proposal there were quite a few supporters of disc golf on the board. Suzi Schmidt was strongly against the idea.

I am a Lake County voter and will keep this in mind while casting my ballot.  If there are others running that share her point of view, please let us know.

I am for disc golf.  It only hurts the cause to see the negative nancy point of view in a public forum from a supposed fellow player/participant in our great sport.  Whatever happened to all for one and one for all?  Would any of us even spend a minute of of time here if we did not care about disc golf in some way?  If one cares, common sense would normally dictate that you want to see the sport grow in the number of courses, participants, and supporters.

Maybe someone has the winter blues.  It's been a while since we have had nice disc golf weather around here.  I hope that frown turns upside down!  Spring is right around the corner!

On the other hand if she is in the State Senate would that open up her spot to a more reasonable voice on the Lake County Board? :)

If it got approved by the LCFP, it would have to go in front of the Lake County Board and that is where the real work begins.
Planners would be called in, county board members would discuss it.  Throughout the entire time, residents would be voicing their concerns about the money needed, the impact to the land etc etc   And what would happen if it got approved?    Someone would file a lawsuit blocking it for months or years.  Look at that fight in McHenry regarding a course being built on wetlands...Thats NOTHING compared to what the Lake County residents would do if they found out the LCFP wanted to use land for disc golf..

I'd love to have a course at a LCFP but the majority of the voting population in Lake County do not care about disc golf and do not want to see any money spent on something like this.  Perfect example are the wetlands.  My father and his political allies on the board fought for years against them and for the most part they failed.  Organizations would appear out of the blue and file stupid lawsuits to block any development.

and Tom, yes I know that 99% of disc golfers do not use illegal drugs on courses, HOWEVER that is the current perception of a lot of people in politics.  They look at us as a bunch of pot headed idiots who have nothing better to do than play a game they believe is a recreational sport.

I've never heard a political speech on the ethics of disc golfers, but I'm guessing that's a big assumption being made. A lot of the time I've heard Brett having to explain exactly what disc golf is since a lot of people don't even have a clue. You are saying that everyone in politics has a preconceived notion about disc golfers before even knowing what disc golf is?

It's fairly futile to focus on the negatives and ideas about what people might be thinking rather than focusing on the positives and pushing these areas into the masses. Edge, multiple leagues in the area with age gaps of 30+ years, family friendly sport that everyone can play, etc.

Screw the politicians! Probably 99% of taxpayers think that politicians are filthy rich people who care only about themselves. Don't give in to some political bullshit, fight to the end. It seems politicians don't give a rats ass about anything but a vote for themselves. With all the hanky panky going on with politicians on the hill, they have no room to be judging what disc golfers reputations are!  And if they do feel that way about disc golfers then they know where to go!

Disc golf went thru all the levels of the Lake County Forest Preserve. They had a worker do quite a bit of research about disc golf. I thought his report was very good and I got my hands on a copy. He presented the information to every committee and they took a vote at every meeting. I was able to give input at several meetings I knew about and attended.  It was very difficult finding out when these meetings were taking place and they cancelled or changed dates many times. Every vote passed at these meetings. At no time was money an issue. $50,000 is nothing for the LCFPD. The Board had a final vote and it was shot down. I never got an accurate count on how close the vote was. I do know Suzi Schmidt strongly opposed disc golf at every meeting I attended.

It is easy to see why politicians placed a low priority on disc golf.  Residents did so.  Politicians would have to explain why they put a higher priority on disc golf than their constituents.  This is a tough issue for us to overcome.  It would be interesting to see how high or how intense the so-called negative feelings were. I don't think the survey looked into the strength of people's opinions. Are people not interested in disc golf or are they strongly opposed. I suspect the former. That would allow some room to let to more enlightened Board show some leadership without running into steeped opposition.  To the extent that we can show a benefit to the community--healthy lifestyle, getting kids involved, green activity, inexpensive (residents may want another nature center but that costs hundreds of thousands and is a much bigger commitment), support from people involved with other activities?(I bet the nature people would think disc golf, if it does not harm the environment, wold be a good idea),cheap sport for new players to get equipment, pride in a local organization that is run by the State Coordinator who coaches local kids, coordination with other activities (one spouse plays a round while the other walks the dog on a hiking trail?), demographics (higher income people were more in support of disc golf per the survey)...we can keep pushing the message and hope to eventually break through when the Board turns over a bit.

Your right! Since our club formed here in the Fox Valley, we have introduced the game to the community by means of benefits, free lessons, raising money for charity at the local fair, and of course building a solid relationship with the Park District. Several parents of some of our younger members are very pleased with the disc golf courses and are glad they are there. Most of them even like to play. Disc golf may be a tough sell but don't give up on it. It may take some time to sell it but Lake County Forest Preserve should wise up and realize there's no better bang for the buck than disc golf. Introducing, in my opinion, is the key.
