Hello fellow discheads,  My name is Shawn McGee and I am a 40 yr old disabled veteran coming to the Hines VA Central Rehab Blind Center tomorrow 1/12/11 and wanted to know some information on local courses and also if anyone is crazy enough to play in the Windy City this time of year. Hines is located 12 miles west of downtown and from what little research I have did on line I wanted to know about "safe" parks to play accessible by bus or a fellow disc golfer whom may be a tour guide for this area. I am legally blind but still have central vision just very limited peripheral vision and I am an adv id disc golf for going on a year and a half. I have recorded a 235 ft ace and four fairway aces of 150ft or better, furthest was 300 ft wedged in the side of the basket whooo hooo!
I would appreciate any guidance or help while I was in your fine city. I would have evenings and weekends available and also MLK day this coming Monday. If anyone could tell me about where is some good courses I would appreciate it very much. I hope to hook up for a round with some people while in town possibly be there until the end of the month. The two closest parks I have seen most convenient for from Hines are Central Park located in Oak Brook (7.7 miles from Hines) and possibly the course at the Chicago Institute of Technology which is almost the same distance just west of my location.
Once again any and all information would be much appreciated from one fellow disc golfer to another. Thanks alot it will make my time away from home much better to get some disc golf in while in town. I have attatched a picture I am on the right of Dave Feldberg  ::)

Very cool Shawn. I played a round in the 1997 Worlds in Michigan with a kid that was legally blind. I was amazed at how good he actually was. His caddie had to always ring up chains for him, but other than that, he was just told the distance and what was in front of him. He didn't place or anything, but just to be out there playing was amazement enough. I myself am from the Peoria area, but am a club member of Discontinuum. I know there are several crazy enough to play in the winter, and am sure someone will volunteer to show you some good courses. But going off what I have read here about the course at Institue of Technology, it may not be a course to play??

CE Valkyrie is the Illinois State Coordinator, and an official of this club. He may know of some courses and of some players to help you out while in town.  Good luck to ya, and Happy Discin.

Shawn your best bet would be to head over to IIT. It is a fun urban course.  There are usually students out there playing.

Shawn,

Yes, some of us are crazy enough to play all year.  We have sat & sun leagues, but they are not accessible to you by a bus.

I may be able to come down your way on Monday & be a tour guide for the day.  I'm still working on a confirmation to get the day off b/c we are usually not busy on the federal holidays.  If that works out, I will take you to Shady Oaks Park in Streamwood or one of the Joliet area courses.

Bump!

Anyone interested in meeting for a round or 2 on Monday?  I know most people are working, but if you're not let us know.
