I think one of the most heroic stories coming out of Japan is of the 50 technicians that volunteered to stay behind at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to try to get the plant under control after flooding, explosions, etc after the earth quake. There is a good likelihood that they will die even if they are successful in bringing the plant under control. I do hope that they are successful.

Very heroic indeed.

My GF is flying over there in less than 2 wks.  She flys into Tokyo and then takes the bullet train to Hiroshima. We're kinda nervous, to say the least.

Fortunately Hiroshima is well away from all the danger. They were not effected by the earthquake or the tsunami. Even if they had a Chernobyl-like meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi, Hiroshima is well out of range. Hiroshima is about 200 miles from Tokyo and then Fukushima Daiichi is another 150 miles north of Tokyo. The Chernobyl evacuation zone is only about a 20 mile radius.

How long is she going to be in Japan?

Her brother in law is currently out there playing (its their spring training right now) baseball for the Hiroshima Carp.  Shes traveling out there with her sister and their kids (3).  They have twin 1 yr olds so they needed another adult to fly out there, so shes going for 1 week during her spring break.  Short trip.

If Japanese park districts are like American park districts, and these reactors are spewing fallout, soon there will be a lot more land available for courses!   :o
