MMXI Mokena Big D Doubles
September 11, 2011, at the Oaks

A PDGA C-tier Best Shot Doubles Tournament

Trophy-only Entry Fees
Pro Teams - $10 per team
Am Teams - $10 per team

Proof of current PDGA membership or $10 nonmember fee required

If either partner is a PDGA professional, rated at or above 970, the team must register as a pro team.

All expenses, including the course use fee and PDGA fees, have been covered by sponsor added cash.  Payouts will be handled as a side game.  See below.

Schedule
Check-in: 7:45-8:45am
Players meeting 9:15am
The lunch break will end 1 hour from the last card being turned in. Don't be late. We will get started on time.
The awards ceremony will start as soon as possible.

The tournament will be played on a 21-hole Big D course featuring 6 combined holes and two extended holes.

Side Games:

Optional $5 Per Team Eagle Pool.  An eagle is two under par.  The course will include several par 4 holes.  The Eagle Pool will be awarded in equal shares per eagle and will be awarded to the team to be split 50/50 between the partners.

The Hula Hoop Game.  There will be ~18 hula hoops on the course.  If a competitively thrown disc lands in or touching a hula hoop, the team is eligible to win an edible prize baked by Diana.  To claim the prize, the team must then pick up the hoop, carry it for the rest of the round and turn it in to the hula hoop prize czarina.  This game is included with your entry fee.

Cash CTPs.  The entry fees will fund cash CTPs on the course for all players.

Optional Flight Awards.  The field will be divided into four equal sized flights sorted by combined team rating.  You may enter the Flight Awards game at $80 per team or $40 Half-In per team using IOS Half-in rules.  Assuming a full field with full participation, the top four teams in each flight will receive a graduated payout.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grab your phone.  Call your partner.  With the Flight Awards side game, anyone can team up with anyone, and compete in the flight indicated by their team rating.  Dana can team up with Ashley.  Brett can team up with his dad.

Cashless Pre-Reg:

I will be taking cashless pre-reg from teams where both players have a PDGA rating.  To reserve a place by cashless pre-reg one partner must post on this thread their team in the following form:

Rating--Player Name--PDGA#--Pro/Am--Team Rating
998-----Dana Vicich--26228----Pro
791--Ashley Gilbert--46857----Am-------1789

So copy and paste that but substitute in your information.

I'm filling to foursomes with no floaters.  This will fill.  Don't delay.

Note: Because cashless pre-reg can be a little soft, I might fill to foursomes plus two floater groups.

If anyone asks [59 looks; no posts] I'll put up the course routing information.

The tournament is now on the PDGA calendar.  The PDGA calendar says to go to Disc Golf Scene for information.  For now, that is just misdirection.  I would like to give Illinois Open Series players first opportunity to know about this, and most of you read this forum, Fox Valley's or both.

I'll post pre-reg here and at PDGA.com.  To keep teams together on the PDGA website, you'll all get fictional middle initials.  The PDGA tools are not very functional for doubles.

I think I'm a little confused by the format.  Is this a singles with a doubles sidebet, or is the format best shot doubles?  I thought I knew, but then I saw that this was a C-Tier on PDGA and not an XC.

The way I would interpret this event:

This is Best Shot Doubles.  Trophy Only as far as the PDGA is concerned, but really $90 per team to participate in a cash-only payout non-PDGA event and trophy only PDGA tournament at the same time.  The reason the $10 trophy only fee is listed for the PDGA tourney would be so PDGA Amateurs can play for a cash payout while playing a separate PDGA sanctioned event simultaneously.

The divisions for the cash payout tournament will be created by putting the highest rated 25% of the teams in Division A, the next highest 25% in Division B...and so on, so you have 4 equally sized divisions regardless of who signs up to play.

If I were Bruce and I wanted this to fill, I would make the Best Shot Doubles $80 per team part more prominent in my postings.  I think this is the part that speaks to the majority of golfers who would play.

Why not just run this non-sanctioned?  There are no ratings for a doubles event, so I'm not sure of the advantage of having it be a PDGA event, other than its listed on the Tour page and you can get a few PDGA points for those who care about points.

Scott: It is best shot doubles.  They have new people at the PDGA doing things, so maybe they did not notice that it needed an X.  I checked off the box for doubles and noted it in the text box when I submitted the sanctioning request.  I modified the first post to make it clear that it is best shot doubles.

Dan: Mokena wants a bazillion dollars worth of insurance.  The PDGA will give you a bazillion dollars worth of insurance for $50 if you pay the $50 sanctioning and $2 per player.

I'm curious about the course routing and hole distances.
Every player will get a course guide.  This is the first draft of the text.  I would love it if someone could measure 6-22 for me:

Mokena Big D Course Guide

Any distances which vary from the tee sign were measured by wheel.  The only water o.b. is the pond near tournament central.  Any wet drains or creeks are casual: stand where it lands, or go straight back away from the basket until you are out of the water, with no penalty, if you are taking that throw.  On 500+ foot holes, you may drive when the group ahead is out of range.

Hole - Length - Par - Description

1-2 ---- 515 ---- 3 -- From 1 Long to Basket 2

3 ------ 365 ---- 3 -- 3 Long

4-5 ---- 440 ---- 3 -- 4 Long to 5 basket

6-7 ---- 650 ---- 4 -- 6 Long to 7 basket.  Throw generally in the direction of the bagged #4 basket.  Possible rope o.b. on right.

8 ------ 275 ---- 3 -- Hole 8, long if there is a short.

9 ------ 540 ---- 3 -- Hole 9 long.

10 ----- 560 ---- 3 -- Hole 10 long

11 ----- 430 ---- 3 -- Hole 11 long

12-13 - 750 ---- 4 -- Hole 12 tee to 13 basket. Count all your throws.

14 ----- 300 ---- 3 -- Hole 14 long

15 ----- 290 ---- 3 -- Hole 15 long

16-17 - 350 ---- 3 -- Hole 16 tee to 17 basket, mando left of the marked tree.

18 ----- 450 ---- 3 -- Hole 18 long

19 ----- 210 ---- 3 -- Hole 19

20 ----- 225 ---- 3 -- Hole 20

21 ----- 235 ---- 3 -- Hole 21.  After 21 you are going to the 6 Red (Short) tee, so don't cut through 18 fairway.

6-22 -- 780? --- 4 -- 6 Short (red) to 22 basket.  Throw generally towards bagged #6 basket and just keep going to 22 basket.  I forgot to measure this hole but will try to get out for IOS Jericho Lake and measure it then.  There may be rope o.b. on the left to separate this from hole 6-7.

23 ----- 310 --- 3 -- 23 long if there is a short

24-25 - 410 --- 3 -- 24 long to 25 basket

26 ----- 310 --- 3 -- 26 long

27E ---- 550 --- 4 -- 27 long to portable Chainstar near pond and tournament central.

21 holes - 8945 - 67 - When adding your scorecard you may want to use the convention that every hole is par three and that 21 X 3 = 63.  Par 4s are indicated for purposes of the Eagle Pool and par is 4 on those holes if you are late to tee off.  Don't let the par fours confuse you when totalling your card.  The penalty for incorrectly totaled cards will apply.

So based on your edits to your original post, there is a required side game of posting on this thread on September 8th in order to remain on the pre-reg list?

Correct.  If you want to reserve a spot by cashless pre-reg, I'm requiring you to reconfirm on September 8.

If you and your partner have a PDGA rating, you can reserve a spot by following the directions at the end of the first post.  If not, you can sign up at the Oaks on Saturday morning.

Somebody sent me a private message wanting to know how you run a tournament at Mokena without paying them their $500 per day course use fee.

My answer is, I don't know.  I sold a big pile of discs at the CCR Flymart and am using the proceeds to pay the course use fee and the PDGA sanctioning.  It is my thank-you to everyone who ever played an IOS I had a hand in.  I hope 84 of you will play this and have exceptional amounts of fun.

And on that topic, if I owned a course like that, you'd pay me at least $500 per day for exclusive use of the course.  If I owned a great course, like Mason County or Kensington Black Locust, I'd want more.  We should be thankful that so many park districts give it away for free.

The WRP

0--William Pacelli--49790--Am--N/A
no current rating--Jack Nagrodski--38664--Am--N/A

Can we still pre-reg with one player having no rating and having no team rating?
We are definitely in no matter what, but I figured a pre-reg would be nice.
Let me know, thanks!

You must have ratings to pre-reg.  I will take ELF ratings as being as good as PDGA ratings, if the elves are calculating ratings on non-members this year.

Elves?

If the elves are calculating ratings but you don't have one, you two need to play the IOS at Jericho Lake.

The elves are still hard at work. Pacelli they know about, Nagrodski needs to play in some tournaments and make himself known.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to play, but I need to find a partner as well.  Anyone want to be part of a low flight group? lol.  I can play over my rating on good days! haha.
