Could it have been caused by bad luck on Friday the 13th or my own stupidity? You be the judge.
This moring at about 11:30 a.m. as I am aproaching Hiestand Park in Madison for a round of disc I spotted Sergio's car. In my haste to catch up with him I parked, hit the trunk opener, got out of my car and reached into the trunk for my disc bag. At this point I noticed my car radio was still on. I thought this was kind of weird because it should shut off when I close the door. So next, attentive person that I am, I pick up on the exhaust coming out of the tail pipe. This is not good. The motor is still running. Kind of explains problem a.) the radio still on. Not a problem I say I'll just reach in and turn off the ignition and remove the key. Would have been a lot easier if the doors had not been locked.
Huston we have a problem.
O.K. the trunk is still open so maybe I can get the back seat to fold down and crawl though to the front. Yah, right. I reach through trunk and give the back rest a couple of shots with my hand. Nope, that didn't work. I crawl into the trunk to see if getting any closer to the back rest and hitting it will pop it open.
This is no easy task for someone of my stature. I am 6'2" and 225 lbs (just go with me on this it was not a good day) climbing into the trunk of a Pontiac Sunfire. By no means a luxury vehicle.
If anyone was looking they had to be laughing thier ass off. Any way I crawl in give the back rest a few really weak hits cause it's a lot tighter in there than it first appeared from the outside. Seat don't budge. Maybe I could get it open if I had something to pry the latch with. Ah my trusty pocket knife! O.K. I can't get my hand into my pocket while I am impersonating a sardine in the trunk. I crawl, squirm, wiggle my way back out of the trunk.
I reach in my pocket, get my knife, climb, wiggle, squirm my way back into the trunk. I fiddle around with the latch. The "large" two inch blade is not enough to free the latch. Apparently I need a bigger knife. The Swiss Army knife with the crow bar blade would be good. Back out of the trunk I climb, wiggle, squirm a beaten man. Nearly on the verge of tears. All I wanted to do was catch up to my friend Sergio Carrea.
I went across the street to A Discs Throw, the local disc golf store, to use thier phone. It is closed. I had to go next store where they were very nice and let me use there phone to call the Pontiac rodeside assistance line. I gentleman in a tow truck showed up about a half hour later and popped the door lock in about 3 seconds flat. Sure its easy if you have the right tools. I almost locked it again and gave him my pocket knife to see how he'd with that. But I figured he would drive off and leave me stranded. And deservedly so.
Oh ya, Sergio must have finished his round and left while I was in using the phone.
Other than that it was a pretty good day.
So, Friday the 13th or my own stupidity?
Don't answer that question. I already know what it is.

I've been there before Pat. Standing out in 100 degree heat on asphalt in Houston, Texas. Thought I could get the car started and air going.   I'll never forget about it.

I did the same thing, except I went grocery shopping while the car was running and didn't realize what I had done until I had finished shopping.  Called my Dad to have the spare key brought out, but he was sleeping.  By the time I got the car open, it was out of gas.  :(

If Bruce reads this he could tell a wonderfully funny story (provided his feeble mind remembers) of the day that my Mom locked the keys in the car at Lakehurst. I only remember it as the day that my brothers and sisters tried to kill me and the head injury makes my memory of the day a bit foggy.

My only related story was this one time 6 years ago. Me and my buddy Robb had gone inside a Burger King for some food. I managed to leave my keys in the car and ofcourse lock the door. Thankfully Robb has a cell phone so we call the police. 10 minutes later theres a cop at my car with a slim jim. After about 10 minutes he cant get the lock(the car btw is a 89 mustang). I ask the cop if I can try he says sure thing. He hands me the slim jim and I pop the lock in very literally 4 seconds. I hand the slim jim back to the speachless and dumbfounded cop who finally looks up from the slim jim and asks me "Do this before eh?" We thought the cop was going to arrest me.

On a related comedic note, if your a fan of stand up comedy check out Jake Johansen he does a bit about locking his keys in the car... It's priceless.

I'm flattered...this whole discussion just because Pat was trying to catch up with me. You'll have to send me your phone number Pat, I'll probably be in Madison alot. My girlfriend's family lives out that way and we plan on making a good number of visits in the near future.

I would have loved to play a round with you. It's been a long time. I thought we would get in a round before the ICE BOWL on Saturday. Needless to say the girlfriend gave up after only 5 holes. I did come back and play the full round at about 3:00. Good thing Saturday was much nicer...we played in the mixed doubles division and she lasted both rounds (no whining, no complaining). She had a great time and wants to practice.

Pat, if you're gonna be in Parkside territory this weekend, let me know. Maybe we can play (Saturday is the better day for me).

By the way, I've locked my keys in the car also...my doors lock automatically when you turn on the car. It was the winter and had to clean off the windows. Thought I would start the car and let the heat kick for a little bit. Amen to AAA!
